Carnatia: A Brief Study
Carnatia was and had always been a merchant nation. A connection from the nations and tribes to the north to the naval empires to the south. A link across a narrow Isthmus of Dalai. Car Dalai, the city on the isthmus, was the hub of this. On the north harbour, ships would carry southern goods and luxuries to the men of the north, returning with furs and northern resources. In the bustling south harbour a vast array of different ships constantly came and went, bringing anything that they could sell, and leaving with both Carnatian goods and rare things of the distant north.
But Carnatia was not all dependent on its flourishing trade. Rich farmlands stretch out to the southwest. To the forested regions to the east and west, land is always being cleared to make way for farmland, the lumber used for construction, or shipbuilding.
The climate of Carnatia is not as cold as its latitude may suggest. Warm currents waft up the inland sea from the south, heating Car Dalai and other coastal lands.
But wouldn't this great land be subject to constant harassment and attempted invasions by the less-civilized?
Not at all! For Carnatia keeps a strong military to guard its ports and borders, and a strong navy to defend its trading interests. Not necessarily large, but strong. The Border guards push away any barbarians who would challenge the people of Carnatia, expanding our lands so we can feed the ever-growing population. Meanwhile, our elite troops defend the city of Car Dalai, and all of the new cities growing throughout the lands. Carnatia would be a difficult nut to crack, were someone to seek its destruction.
But it is unlikely that someone would, even more so that Carnatia would seek it out. For war kills trade, which is never a good thing for the merchants. And the Carnatians are a peaceful, just people by nature. We needn't fight fellow nations over petty things, for minor territories, gold, or a fearsome reputation. We live to enjoy life, not to revel in pain and death.
