WORLD NEWS UPDATE 3 - JANUARY 1901
Ural War
Mongol troops attack across northern Siberia, hoping to use their experience with the cold weather of Mongol Siberia to their advantage. However, the Russian troops, bolstered by the troops from Poland and Sweden and by a national draft, have begun repelling or stalemating Mongol forces at all major fronts, though the Mongols' campaign in the northermost regions of Siberia yielded moderate success. Some of the Russian forces have managed to drive the front in some places back to the pre-war border, and Russia has regained control of much of the Ob and Irrysh Rivers that demarcated the Russo-Mongolian pre-war border.
Popular opinion in Russia meanwhile has skyrocketed in support of the Tsar and the military effort and mass demonstrations have been held in support of the government throughout the Russian Empire, including one in Kiev which was supported by the Ukrainian Autonomist Alliance. This has been largely because of news of atrocities committed by Mongol troops, and promises that the war effort will continue to free the people from the terror of living under the rule of the "demonic spawn of the Huns".
In Kazakhstan, meanwhile, the TNLL has declared a Provisional Government of the Independent State of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat. Elections for a new government have been scheduled for May. The rebel militias and many volunteer forces have joined to create the army of the IST. Fortifications have been hurriedly set up on the border with Mongolia by the Turkmen and many of the civilians have begun preparing for an all-out invasion by Mongol or even Kazakh forces.
Only about a week after the IST's establishment, Mongol forces swarmed into Kazakhstan and effectively managed to prevent a Turkestani revolution before it even managed to organize itself. Some of the land that Turkmenistan has claimed has also been occupied by Mongol troops.
Meanwhile, the Kazakh capital has fallen into disorder as multiple small but strong socialist insurrections have, in rapid succession, destroyed each component of the Emperor's authority. With many of the troops at the front, the Emperor had to rely only a small contingent of loyalist policemen who were also overwhelmed by the revolutionary mobs. The Emperor's family managed to flee to Turkey, but the Emperor himself was caught in the Astrakhan Port and taken into house arrest by the revolutionaries. Their demands to the monarch are simple: relinquish the crown, sue for peace with Russia, and surrender power to the revolutionaries.
On the Russo-Kazakh front, the Kazakh loyalist troops have also been thrown into disarray. Disgruntled soldiers have turned their weapons on the ultraloyalists in their ranks and the Kazakh people have for the most part not resisted the invasion. Many others have simply deserted the front, completely demoralized. This confusion has also allowed the Russians to plow through the Kazakh armies. In the Russian-occupied areas, as in Astrakhan, the Communist Party has begun establishing people's councils calling for a "Council Republic" while a new, rival, Democratic Party has begun gathering its own support for a Democracy. The scant Kazakh forces have fled south into the waiting open arms of the Mongols.
In the East, meanwhile, the Mongol troops have set up strong defense columns in the Altay provinces and further Chinese thrusts have been unable to break this "wall". Manchuria, meanwhile, has been invaded by Mongol and Korean forces. The joint 2-front surprise attack has been successful and much of Manchuria is already in Mongol or Korean hands.
Russia - 1,400,000 troops; Mongolia - 2,000,000 troops; China - 1,700,000 troops, 10 Artilleries; Korea - 300,000 troops; Poland - 100,000 troops; Kazakhstan - 1,500,000 troops [deserted], 1,500,000; Sweden - 50,000 troops
Caribbean War
Italian troops suddenly pull out en masse from the Seminole Empire, and Seminole military high command and the government return to Miami, building instantly new ships to protect the port from any more invasions.
In the Caribbean itself, the Italians have attacked and occupied the Bahamas, but not before several refugee ships, some with Iroquois troops on board, fled the Islands. The Italian Navy was unable to intercept the ships and was only aware of the escape by the time it was too late to do anything and get away with it alive.
Throughout Iroquois lands, meanwhile, heavy anti-Italian propaganda is spread continuously, including rumors of Italians eating or torturing children, which encourages people to join the army to protect their families from these cannibalistic European vermin. The Iroquois coasts become the sites of mass military defense buildups.
An Italian invasion force lands just north of Boston after being able to overwhelm the defenses in place there. This leads immediately to the bloody Battle of Boston between evenly-matched Iroquois and Italian forces. Artillery fire rained upon the Iroquois first, taking out quite a few soldiers, but these Americans quickly compensated and whipped out their own Artilleries. What was expected by each side to be a guaranteed victory has turned to a bloody trench battle of attrition: every time some Italians got closer to Boston, the Iroquois pushed their enemies back in some other section of the front line. Civilians have also perished: most of them were killed by Italians because they were trying to sabotage the foreign war effort through local resistance movements.
The Battle of Boston rages on.
Italy - 1,400,000 troops, 3 Artilleries, 50 ships; Iroquois League - 2,100,000 troops
Norway and Sweden become a dual monarchy
The Swedish Emperor Gustavus III has signed a pact with Norwegian Grand Duke Hans Alex to make Norway an autonomous kingdom within the greater Norwegian-Swedish Empire. On New Year's Day, a ceremony was held and Emperor Gustavus III declared Hans Alex as the Regent of Norway and guardian of the Crown until the return of Rudolf III Jonah. This has been hailed by Norwegians as a way to maintain at least limited self-determination, though there remain some more hard-liner nationalists. If King Rudolf returns to claim the Crown as a constituent component of a federal Empire, it may bring about peace and cooperation between the Norwegians and Swedes. If he does not return, on the other hand, the Hans-Gustavus pact will be warped by the nationalist extremists as meaningless and violence will break out.
Meanwhile, a parliament has been called into session: the Veresi. This first Veresi is made up of representatives of the various Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish provinces. These representatives are simply placeholders for elections to be held within the year and are writing the constitution for the rising Parliamentary Monarchy. Political parties are already forming and campaigning: the Finnish Nationalist Party, the Greater Scandinavian Unionist Party, the Scandinavian Militarist League, the Norwegian Confederate Party, the Swedish Social-Democratic Party, and the People's Republican Party of Sweden.
In Gdansk, repression concludes in both [Polish] West Gdansk and [Swedish] East Gdansk. The office of the Revolutionary Council in West Gdansk was burned along with political prisoners that were taken there by troops in the final bout of monarchist repression in West Gdansk. Throughout the rest of Poland, the search for Luxemburg continues. In East Gdansk, meanwhile, the Swedish troops withdraw from the proletarian districts of the city, though the workers there have been traumatized by the months of brutal repression and terror.
Bohemia
Bohemia, in anticipation of imminent war, has begun mobilization of her armed forces. Fortifications have been built along the borders with Hungary and Austria.
On the other side, the militaries of Austria and Hungary also grow weary.
Throughout the region, the mood is tense and a certain chill permeates the air. Everyone expects war. Meanwhile, pan-Germanism continues to rise.
Japanese Uprising in Shanghai
The Japanese population of Shanghai has launched a massive uprising. The insurgence began on the eve of the election to the Senate, during the night of the third day of the month. First, Japanese militants quietly sneaked into the residences of the leaders of the Chinese faction and murdered them and their families. After that, the militants distributed arms to the Japanese citizens - primarily the workers - and the uprising no longer occured in silent secrecy. The Japanese contingents of the Shanghai Army hurriedly joined the revolt and by the time the sun rose in the morning, the Senate hall was occupied by the Japanese insurrectionists. Throughout rural Shanghai, outside the city itself, Japanese peasants also took up arms and seized control of the rural farms. A People's Congress was formed by the insurgents, and it declared the Shanghai People's Republic - a communist government.
Though the first week of the uprising was relatively civil in regards to the Chinese populations - with the exception of the assassinations at the very beginning - the Japanese-dominated Congress enacted laws promoting aggression against the Chinese (who indeed lived more luxuriously than their Japanese counterparts and owned mansions in the countryside because of economic savvy inherited from its proximity to China). In the countryside, repression turned especially brutal and forced-labor camps were erected. Most of the Chinese and many of the few Japanese economic elite have been packed into the camps.
In one legislation of mercy, the Congress has given amnesty to any Chinese peasant and to all members of the defunct Senate.
Indian settlements dot the Ethiopian coasts, filled with immigrants from that country. Meanwhile, in the USEA (Union of South East Asia - former India-Siam), the military becomes the strongest in the region through training and even volunteers joining.
Serbian discontent continues to rise.
Malcontent in Italy rises with the start of a stronger Italian Communist Party.
Nationalist uprisings begin across the northern Zulu Empire
Nationalist uprisings have broken out across the Zulu Empire among its Nigerian, Somalian, and Kenyan minorities. The Somalian rebels seem to be the strongest of the three groups.
In Kenya, the monarch promises parliamentary elections within a year. A Kenyan Nationalist Party forms and begins intense rivalry with the African Unionist Party. The former promoting self-determination while the latter promoting pan-African unity under Zulu Empire.
