StKNES5: A New Lease on NES

Orders sent.

To Seljuk
from Kuril'taria
We needn't speak to Saratov. They know what is coming. If they surrender, they surrender, if they don't, they intend to die. Do you intend to die as well? [ooc-actually Kam, I must have missed them in the update! I was wondering who they were.]

i dunno.
there must have been a reason. or it could've been a mistake - do u have ur old set of orders still? if not, then i can't and won't do anything. if u do, send them and i will either fix it or there may actually be a reason for it
and u should have brought it up earlier when i had it fresh in my memory

ok i remember what happened

Hmm, as our nations are fairly disconnected, I think a NAP would be enough for now.

From: Malaysia

You do understand that our war with Australia is due to their aggression, right? We warned them not to take control of Papua, but they still did. In the coming war, they will be brought into the true Balist fold, and Papua will be returned to its previous state.

You can still rest assured that we will be the closest of friends for as long as our two nations exist.

ok i got all orders, thanx
good :)
i think i will start having deadlines at least 2 days early, if i'm gonna implement that government legislature-review of orders thing, cuz now there is obviously no time to do it.
update will begin at around noon, when i return from the Polish Constitution Day parade downtown.
VIVA POLONIA!

What time is it over there anyway?

ack! i'm having writer's block...
but worry not, it will be finished tomorrow

Update – 1150 AD

The Kuril’tarian army is invading the Seljuk Empire. Unfortunately for the Seljuks, their army is still new and thus small, not to mention lacking of an education comparable to that provided for the Tatar troops. Thus, despite heavy resistance by the Seljuk army, they made it to Astrakhan as well. Some of the Seljuk clan leaders have been executed and their heads put on pikes in display, but some of the family, dispersed across western and southern Seljuk Empire areas, escaped and are suspected of making their way towards Persia or Greater Armenia.
Though the Seljuk Empire, short-lived as it was, is again part of Kuril’taria, the Tatar “barbaric” defiling of Astrakhan, an Islamic center for the Turks, is provoking major backlash throughout the Muslim population, and the entire area is in the midst of revolts against the Tatars’ disregard for the Turks’ Islamic faith. Sunni and Shiite Muslims put their differences aside and, although somewhat strained, mended temporarily their relations to combat the Tatars.
Persian Muslims are crossing into the rebelling Turk areas to help their fellow Muslims against the disrespectful Tatar heathens.
It is unknown how many are in the rebelling “militias” of the Muslims/Turks but raids and attacks have occurred upon Kuril’taria’s forces. Some of the slaves taken by the Tatars during the invasion have been restored their freedom during some of the raids, further bolstering the Muslim/Turk ranks.
KURIL’TARIA: -3,400 Cavalry, -1,100 Infantry, -2 Confidence levels

In Vietnamese China, near the Korean border, some villages were burnt to the ground, their residents kicked out of their homes and some of the women raped. It is unknown who the hooligans were at present – it could have been literally anyone: a Korean attack? sons and grandsons of members of the Chinese feudal warlords’ armies? or a simple group of bandits not affiliated with anyone just looking for loot?

The famine in Ruthenia is over, but before it ended, it took another 56,800 people to their deaths. The nobility remains mainly untouched by the famine, as is the tsarist family, which is causing some resentment among the population. Crime is also on the increase, muggings becoming a daily occurrence.

There is much activity in the lands of the former Islamic Empire. In the west, the Moroccan army pummeled the small military of the Sultanate of Oran into the sand, annexing the entire country. They kept going and defeated the Carthaginian army as well, though Carthage was given to the Aghlabid Empire – apparently the operation was part of an accord between the Aghlabids and Moroccans.
MOROCCO: -400 Infantry, -100 Cavalry
The Aghlabids themselves are moving into Luxor and Marsah. Here, as in Oran and Carthage, the smaller states’ armies are easily subdued, but instead of complete annexation, the Aghlabid Emperor decided to take only the western parts of both countries and placed his nephews on the thrones of both truncated states. In Marsah the Shiites were in power even before, but in Luxor, the Sunnis, who dominated the government prior to the invasion, are now ruled by the Shiites.
Not to be outdone, the Umayyads have taken control through a palace coup in Atbara, making that a vassal, and invaded the Emirate of Muscat, taking all of that and absorbing it as well.
The Shiite Sassanids ruling in Iraq are just watching these events meekly, while persuading some of the Iraqis that were leaning towards Sunni Islam towards the Shiite views.

Israel’s long-ruling imperial family has died out, with no male heir to succeed the throne. This has triggered two issues for Israel – one being the succession crisis, of who should rule, and the second being the noble and military families in Madagascar-Ophir declaring that the union with Israel is now void. They took advantage of the succession crisis and the government was disrupted enough to allow for an easy seizure of power from the Israelite governors. The new “Republic of Ophir” is promising to remain in an alliance with Israel, and to resume the ancient trade with Israel. It will be soon determined whether this will be a peaceful or violent separation.

Saxony has purchased Denmark-Brandenburg from Scandinavia, for 2 economy points.

All of Australia is under Malaysia’s control now. The city of Melbourne was completely destroyed during the passionate last stand against the invaders. The Australian people continue resistance, however, constantly raiding and causing troubles for the Malaysian troops. Entire villages and towns get together to organize massive raids. Even during the Battle of Melbourne, the Australians sabotaged the siege weapons, causing them to misfire and kill Malaysian troops.
MALAYSIA: -3,600 Infantry, -100 Cavalry, -15 Catapults

At home, despite the success of the invasion, the Malaysian people know that they are not wanted in Australia and many have come to view the ruling Nurajid family as having gone mad, and as now being heretics to Balism. Disturbances are beginning to occur across Malaysia. (-1 Confidence level)

The New Illini Empire, once stretching across the Atlantic coast, is now left only a comparatively small rump. The Timucua Republic left the empire first, and was followed by the secession of the Caribbean Confederation. Segments of the army, affected by regionalism, joined the new breakaway states, further reducing the New Illini might and making it even more unlikely for them to bounce back as easily as they usually did during such rebellions. It can be thus reasonably stated that the Golden Age of New Illinois, lasting for centuries, has ended in a devastating collapse.
In all three breakaway states – New Iroquois, Timucua, and Caribbean – the people celebrate this as divine revenge for all the horrible deeds the New Illini committed during their heyday.
The disintegration of the New Illini has also disrupted significantly the trade route between it and other powers in the area, except for Illinois which h as direct land access. With the goal of crippling the New Illini economy, the Timucua and Caribbean states have refused access to their ports for Toltec-New Illini shipping, thus severing the Toltec-New Illinois trade route. Though the Toltec economy is strong and has other trade deals anyways, the New Illini are suffering and with the loss of so much land and resources, the New Illini economy is just as shattered as the empire itself.
Still, the proud New Illini continue to insist that they do not need to unite with Illinois and that they will persist in keeping their own identity and nation alive, till better days come.

Meanwhile, celebrations are held in the Illinois Empire about the success of its trading and foreign policy and there is a general feeling of ecstasy about the strength of the empire, though this feeling isn’t as passionate in the northern, Inuit-inhabited provinces. (+1 Confidence level)

NPC Diplomacy

New Iroquois League, Timucua Republic, Caribbean Confederation, and Sioux Empire form the Sovereign Nations League

From Timucua Republic
Toltec Republic:
How much will you sell Miami (what you call Floridamec) for?

From New Iroquois League
To Illinois:
Trade?

From Vietnam
To Illinois:
Hello, visitors from the strange land we’ve heard of from Japan. NAP?

From Vietnam
To Malaysia:
Papua wasn’t yours, and it was, really, not even a coherent country. It was just a whole bunch of tribes that were rarely even talking much together.
In light of this, we must unfortunately take the view that you were the aggressor, not Australia, and we no longer trust in the sanity of your ruling family’s actions, nor do we believe that they are remaining true to Balism.

sucky update but I got writer’s block after the few mini-stories here I managed to write, but at least it’s done

I saw something interesting – tariffs – in someone’s orders. I would like to implement them but I don’t know how yet – if anyone has any suggestions about how to change trade and economy rules to include tariffs, while actually being relatively easy to do/easy to mod, please feel free to suggest.
To add incentive:
1. Anyone who suggests a workable way to alter the economy and trade rules to take into account tariffs, gets an entire level increase for whichever is lowest from the following: Education, Confidence, Economy, or Culture.
2. The person whose method I eventually choose will get, in addition to the above, an increase of another level in ONE of the same stats, with the exception of the stat that they got the first bonus in the first place.

~Darkening~, please remember next time:
a) to include your stats in your orders
b) if you need to edit your orders, please include the FULL SET OF ORDERS, so that I only have to keep open one PM and not have to look at the original and the newer and compare which orders were changed.
--This time you didn’t really change orders but you sent me like 4 PMs saying exactly the same thing about not writing story or something, 2 of them having the orders in it and the others not having the orders. What was weird was that every single PM was titled “Orders for EAR”, so I at first had no idea where to look. Just keep that in mind, and if you want to tell me something that doesn’t really talk much about orders, don’t title the PM “Orders” – indicate that it’s a comment or question or whatever, but not “Orders for EAR” cuz then I’m gonna get really confused and I’ll end up deleting the wrong PM thinking it’s the one that DIDN’T have your stuff in there.

Lord_Iggy, I’m not allowing your project. It would either take WAY TOO LONG (I’m thinking around 16 turns at least, and by then we’ll be in the Industrial Age, God willing) or I would make it affect only a percentage of the population, and either way I’d probably set it to have a 50% chance of failure, because it would be far too easy otherwise. In other words, you’d be wasting your time.

Orders are due THURSDAY at NOON, US CENTRAL TIME. I will then be reviewing the orders of countries that have council/legislature governments (listed under Governments section of rules post) and send replies about what the councils agree and disagree to. After that, the deadline for orders is SATURDAY at NOON, US CENTRAL TIME.

did my spreading religion thingy work? or did you not do it cause of the project
and my education.. didn't i put a point into that?
and did you do the thing with inviting Eire

From the Illinois Empire
To New Iroquious League
Trade would be splendid, however the Devotees would like to inquire as to the purpose of the Sovereign Nations League? We hope that is not a military alliance.

To the Caribbean Confederation and Timucua Republic
Welcome! The Devotees celebrate your independence and invite you to a banquet on the Day of the Divine(that is my national holiday).

To Sioux Empire
The Devotees hope that this new League of Nations will not be a threat to the delicate peace that has been in place for centuries.

To Aghlabid Empire
From the Jewish Sultanate of Morocco
*secret*
Do you think it is wise to control puppet regimes? If you want to be seen as the true heir to the Islamic empire you should unite it all under one flag.
But nonetheless we shall be moving agaisnt the Umayyads positions in Egypt and possibly Atbara unless you require we take a different course of action, We look forward to fighting by your side Ally.

did my spreading religion thingy work? or did you not do it cause of the project
i understood it as an effect of the project
and my education.. didn't i put a point into that?
nope
and did you do the thing with inviting Eire
just edited stat now and Eire has been intro'd into Ohakanthy - 1% of their population converted

From Sovereign Nations League
To Illinois Empire:
It is a military alliance, just as your Gulf Alliance is. It is not directed against your nation - it is directed against New Illinois, so that they don't get any ideas at trying to come back into our countries and restart the many repressions they have initiated in the past. We're not looking to start trouble and disrupt peace - you should be directing your fears not at us but at the New Illini. We don't trust the New Illini any further than we could throw them. They have shown time and time again to be rats. You should be on your guard with them - they may seem weak, but the moment they regain any strength whatsoever, know that they would not hesitate to attack even you, despite your shared lineage, just to get a piece of land.
Our nations' leaders will also gladly attend your Day of the Divine celebrations.
