stNNES7: Worlds and Empires

Incidentally, Xen, I thought you DID read it (Guns, Germs and Steel, I mean)? I'm sure you made some refferences to it during one of our arguments...

I did read it, actually, and I loved it- but that dosent quite mean its the holy bible; its a brilliant book, spot on, IMO, nearlly everything detailed in it; but what he dosent (and more or less, refuses to) account for is the actual impact of culture on how the world developed, and that is a great detractor from his work, IMO

Humanities, eh? I have to read the odyssey and write a 4 page essay on the origin of gender roles by monday.

sucks-write alot a **** about the whole eros/logos stuff, unless you dont cover it in your course. shoudl fit the bill just fine. if you bring up your own sources, wiki that ****, and you otta' be fine.

Speaking of that stuff, you outta' high school yet, or this your senior year?

The Odyssey...that was us arguing about the Phaiakians (sp?) and thinking they were Phoenicians, and realizing that the first twenty-odd books have a lot of sailing and random monsters and gods doing crap to Odysseus, and then the last three or four have so much blood I was reminded of a really bad chainsaw horror flick.

If no one minds I'd like to join as the following nation (my own, also if no one minds) ---

Judiciary Kingdom of Haiti
Ruler/Player: King Toussaint L'Ouverture/ Israelite9191
Age: Iron Age
Government: Judiciary Vodun Monarchy (Vodun judges/priests act as a parliament that elects a king from the 10 closest relatives of the last king)
Category: p: 4 e: 5 s: 6
Religion: Vodun (Voodoo), because of the rather liberal ideas of the religion (mainly because of its origins as an unorganized folk relgion) the religious athorities will generally accept social freedoms
Economy: Stable
Army: 500 spearmen, 500 archers
Navy: 20 galleys (I exchanged 1,000 troops for 10 ships)
Education: Lost Cause
Culture: Barbaric
UU:
Wonders:
Notes: French people who had been driven out of their country long ago escaped to the west coast of Africa mainly in the region of Togo and Benin. There they mixed with the natives to form the Haitian people. The Haitians were subsequently driven out of Africa and escaped across the Atlantic using the strong currents and winds to the Carribean. The Creole subculture seetled on the island of Hispanola and established the capital of Port-au-Prince. The Cajun subculture moved on to settle in the bayou country and found New Orleans, Haiti's second city. Despite the distance and slight cultural/racial (Cajuns are more French and Creoles more African)/linguistic differences, they remain united and trade flourishes between the two areas of settlement.
********
If people object to this nation, I will chose another one that is more 'normal'.

Maybe it was pro-Portuguese collaborators?

it make more sense for it just to be portugese replaced for every instance where "france" is mentioned- as the portugese have been driven from thier homes, have been to africa, and are in need of new realms as they seem to fear the long arm the republic, and it allies (:smug )

besides, no offence meant to the frnech, but I'd hardly call france a seafaring power.

Besides, this is an alternate France - and its more likely that its a more German-like France (no "Roman Gaul"), so...

Then again, Gothic Voodoo could be... interesting. I agree with Xen, though - Portuguese sound more likely. Or Balearics fleeing from the civil war.

Balearic's suck, death to them all etc.

Exactly - which is why they are running away to become Haitians instead. ;)

well since the "Franks: have becoem "French", and the language has transformed itself into what we know as french, in theory, it means that Ravennic culture (spread by Ravennic merchant men setteling down and starting famillies in the region?) had a large influence in France- one would guess that the Germanic invasion did much to pretty much kill off any other remnant germanic traditions as well.

besides, the Germans in this NES are pretty throughlly "Ravenninized" anyway.

some one has a high opinion of himself

Well, I guess that Ravenna might have a heavy influence on them...

Btw, I'm still not sure about what happened with the Franks in this world. I assume that they displaced the Gauls from northern Gaul earlier, then gradually came under Gaelic and, by extension, Ravennan cultural influence, especially after Ravenna became the main cultural alternative to the Germannic influences (that were discredited during the war). Jason?

why cant france be influencing other nations?

Hey Ravenna, Pannonia needs money. May we have an economy level, please?
(ooc) Daaaadddyy, I'm hurt and bleeding. I need first aid!

- Pannonia who just sacrificed three economy levels to fight our enemy
PS. Why didn't you plan to send UU originally? :( *sniff*

@Das- my thoughts exactly

@Emu- not a high opinion of myself; just stateing fact; the "Franks" turned into "France", and now speak "French" which, from what has been written, andits pronounciation, is no different from our real life french- because french is a latin based language, the NES based French must, in turn be based on a Latinate language- the only nation to speak such a a language is Ravenna, but Pannonia, and now Lombardia may be doing so as well.

otherwise my inference of Portugese fear of Ravenna is just story telling for the most part.

@Toteone- too late for that this turn, we'll see how things turn out in the update, and we can make a descision from there. from what i know, it may not actually be needed.

as for UU- wouldnt be effective; they are infantrymen, and while it saysin thier description that they are somwhat specialized to fight steppe peoples, I figured that it woudl just be better to buy a bunch of cavalry, and send a cav/archer combo to go sink thier teeth into cimmerian hide, rather then sending a bunch of infantry, who woudl take massive casulties, and weaken overall forces set for defence fo the great wall.

steppe peoples are a tricky bunch to beat (but certinally not impossible) but to do it effectivlly, IMO at least, ti requires being able to know where your forces will suit you best, and to not to commit troops to a battle you know they will suffer heavy casulties in (but, on the otherhand, not beign afraid to commit your troops to a well drilled offensive- nothing is worse then a "skirmishing war" like what happend in the far east in stNNES 3-IIRC the number correctlly)

i think your reading too much into a name change, i mean Franks sounds like a bunch of people, France sounds like an actual nation.
