Those messenger pop ups are a terrible nuisance and ruin everyones online experience but very few people are aware of the simple solution to the problem. Ive been emailing everybody I know and telling them to spread the word, please pass the word along to all the non geek computer users you know. By the way, this is an XP solution but I think earlier versions of Windows will be similar enough to adapt it.

Click Start -> Control Panel

Click Administrative Tools.

Double click Services.

Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" (a single click).

Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.

Click the STOP button.

Select Disable or Manual under the "Startup Type" menu selection (manual setting is reccomended).

Click OK.

Thats it!

what exactly does this do?

will it effect general online use? file-swapping programs? internet? multi-player games?

thanks

I dont think it will effect those things you mentioned. But Im no expert in this. The best way to find out though is to try it out. If you have any problems with those things and you feel its not worth it just go back and undo it thats all. Im sure there are Ubergeeks here who could give you a definitive answer. IF not, do a little research online about it, theres tons of info out there on this type of thing. XP has me spoiled, Ive forgotten lots of stuff about 95 and 98.

I did it that way :D. It worked, but now I get atleast 100+ popups a day when I'm on for adult lovelines....... any way to hide your computers IP?

What did you do that resulted in you getting all those pop ups?

I'm not to sure. I had only a couple a day for a while, then something happened........how do you hide your computer's IP? I think that might be the problem.

andvruss, there are two types of pop ups. Web page pop-ups and Messenger pop-ups. I provided an XP solution to the Messenger variety above. To get rid of the Web page pop-ups, you need to disable Active Scripting in Internet Explorer:

(again, this an XP solution, it may or may not be applicable to older versions of Windows)

1. open IE

2. click on Tools

3. click on Internet Options

4. click the Security tab

5. click on Custom Level

6. scroll down almost all the way to the bottom till you see:

"Scripting
Active Scripting"

7. click Disable

Thats it, you wont get anymore Webpage pop-ups. Bear in mind however that some pages use Active Scripting for legitimate purposes. For example when you have it disabled you wont be able to use the Smilies here at CFC. Whenever you encounter a problem loading a page or using some functions at a page, it'll probably be because Active Scripting is disabled. So all you have to do in those cases is go back and Enable it again. When its time for adult love lines, just Disable it again;)
