Subdued Animals in C2C discussions

Here is a Wallaby to go with the Kangaroo and Wallaroo. As you can see it is even smaller.

The walaroo is a touch overboard for me but I like the others... got a platypus? Or a Tasmanian Tiger?

No platypus. I have a Thylacoleo and Thylacine, but they look terrible. There is a good thylacine in the extinct animal expansion, but like i said before those models are encoded so I cannot get their meshes.

As for overboard, is it any more overboard then a bunch of big cats or bears that all look the same, just with different textures?

I agree... waaaaaaaay too many cats! Most of the bears seem to have a point and are differentiated enough (though cave bears should be a part of the beginning eras and go extinct eventually - not to confuse them with grizzlies at all which I would think would fall into the 'bear' category) But the cats... I feel all the different kinds of tigers are overboard, yes. We should just have the Sabretooth, and a Tiger. And Lion PACK is overboard as well since we aren't doing that sort of thinking for any other kind of animal.

I had just scaled the kangaroo to give me the red (2 meters+), grey (1-2 meters) and wallaby (less than 1.5 meters).

I assumed the grizzly was a cave bear since it hunts bison and deer.

The tigers bengal/siberian are now overboard but weren't when there were no other animals. Same with the lion pack, however wolf is really a wolf pack and the herbavours are mostly herds not really single units. Just like a spearman is not a single unit.

What happened to units only spawning in unseen tiles? Can we re-implement this please? Seems a bit weird having units materialize out of thin air behind you.....

Personally I think the more variety the better. Seeing the same old animals over and over can be very boring, especially with the ocean. I personally would like to see a pack of wolves if there was a pack of lions. But whatever.

If the tail was not sticking out so weird I would add a snow leopard. But yeah we have a lot of big cats. Note I also have some more bears like a black bear, sloth bear or sun bear if we need more bears. ;)

The one I gave you is a red kangaroo. If you want a grey kangaroo I can give you that too. I have the mesh/texture for it. Note that a wallaroo is not the same as a grey kangaroo.

Yes we can. And I will get to it when I get to it. IE it is on my list like a bunch of other stuff.

Variety is cool, but inundation is not. No matter how many animals you have, after you've seen them for 1000 turns they are not very exciting anymore. It would be cool if there were lots of different animals, but you never saw most of them in a single game. That way there would be true variety and novelty when you ran across something you hadn't seen before (or at least in a while).

Also, I'd rather look at one well drawn and animated animal than 20 different halfway done ones. MOST of the new animals look pretty good, but the ones that are lacking any animation (or sounds) stand out like sore thumbs in comparison.

P.S. the Hawks should be renamed to Moles, since they attack from underground.....

Personally I have the sound off and the animations frozen, so all units look like silent statues to me.

Can we make it as a starting sellctable option for custom games because as each square is several miles (dozens really) wide and I think its insane to think you can watch it all, all the time and nothing ever, ever spawns while your watching.

On a side note, any luck with getting build points toward the myth with each kill and such yet? The myth for hawks and eagles in public v18 needs to be a picture of Alfred Hitchcock's outline as seen in Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Seriously, its distrubing common early on to run into 5 to 8 with each step. Then something else attacks you and is subdued one space away... as for some reason birds of prey attack last this means they kill off my new subdued unit 60-80% of the time if only one attacks them from no where.

And here I was thinking I liked the feature of animals spawning on visible plots. It, for me, lends an air of realism considering that animals commonly hide from dangerous animals like Humans and so you can't always see them even when passing right by them. Having one pop up next to a unit, or next to culture borders, is sweet and lends credibility to tales of such-and-such animal.

What seems to be the important part is them not spawning inside cultural borders (although currently they DO spawn inside Barbarian City borders, and then don't move, stacking up a few animals on said plot). Having animals able to wander inside culture would be more than fine by me, attacking unsuspecting workers and the like. Back then it was a wilderness even if you had settled an area with your tribe.

Cheers

If you are trying to set up a secure perimeter, it is extremely annoying that this is impossible since enemies can appear out of thin air......

It basically means that their is no strategic use for your military versus Barbarians; only tactical response, which is very boring.....

@HydromancerX, thanks for the units but it looks like my machine has reached a limit of some kind. If I add one more unit, actually art definition, then the game CTDs on start up. :(

It may be possible.

I have been toning down the individual animal spawn rate. Going into completely new territory is still very dangerous.

Barbarians don't spawn in visible areas. Neanderthals and Animals do.

This is the only reason I bring up that we should streamline what is and is not put into the game in terms of animals. I love variety too but the animal kingdom has a lot of variety without having to get into superfluous sub-divisions of the same type of animal.

That royally sucks, DH! I wonder what THAT is all about!
