SUL3: Sullla's Training Day Game

Everybody finds the :smoke: popping up in unexpected places. I've certainly not seen any player on the board completely avoid it -- Jaffa, maybe.

Sirian, Charis, Sulla, Zed, me -- we've all done it (and continue to slip that way occasionally). I've had some impressive results but I've also had some impressive implosions. Weed-free is maybe an admirable goal, but recovering from :smoke: is also important -- and that's where a lot of knowledge is gained.

Don't fear the occasional foul-up. Fear not learning from your mistakes. Most of all, don't fear the "gentle" :whipped:, :splat:, or :spank: of another player. It is from those that we learn.

Believe me, ever one of the players hear have made mistakes and learned.

I use to be stuck in a pattern of irrigate plains & deserts, mine grasslands and just about everything else. It took awhile to get a basic lesson beat through my head - examine each city and figure out what it needs. Now I have cities with 100% irrigated grasslands (tons of nearby hills / mountains) to mostly mined plains after rails and all flat lands.

You never know what you can pick up playing games here. I didn't even realize much of my frustration with RDB23 until after the game. I was actually out-classed in play ability - something I hadn't seen in a long time. However, I now have no problems at all in building all water towns just to produce a huge source of income - along with a few other changes to my play.

Pre-thread Reading Completed! (Little work done this afternoon ;) )

Sulla, you are right. It would take an extraordinary amount of :smoke: to mess this game up at this point. You guys have done an admirable job of getting into a winning position. :goodjob:

LK and Arathorn, thank you for the advice. I have to say that it is interesting to see so many high-level players popping into a regent training game. It appears that this website has a strong community to it. :)

I will pick up the game tonight and see where things go. If we are going for world conquest, I will keep that in mind.

BTW, since this one seems to be won, do you guys have any interest in starting a new one?

If Imhotep opts for it, I would be willing to start a new training day game with the same goal. In all honesty, there isn't much point in playing a game past this point; you can plainly see we have reached the point where any victory condition can be achieved. How do you feel about the idea, Imhotep? Each game of Civ3 is usually won before 1000AD; only on Emperor and Deity are games still in doubt past this point, and not even then in a lot of cases. :)

However, I now have no problems at all in building all water towns just to produce a huge source of income - along with a few other changes to my play.

I too learned about the "Nara" city in RBD23, and since have found a place for such a city in almost every game I play. Fishing towns can be a Wall Street all by themselves with a bank and marketplace!

Really nice if you have Smith's and the marketplace / bank are no cost items.;) ;)

oh btw, not critisizing but I prefer my spelling of my name ;)

little pet peeve.... thats all..nuttin serious :D

OK, I will first of all apologize to IHMOTEP (have I really been spelling it wrong the whole time? I could have sworn it was Imhotep before...) on the mixup. It won't happen again. :D

Secondly, how would you two feel about doing an Emperor game? I'm confident that we can win with smart playing, and it will be much more instructful than a game on Regent or Monarch. You do believe I can see you through it, right? ;) I'm a much more confident Civ3 player now than I was five weeks ago when the first training day game started, and now that I have both an Emperor and a Deity win to my credit, I believe I'm fairly qualified to give out advice. Feedback, questions, concerns? If everyone is ready and interested, I will start the game tomorrow.

E--E-Emporer?

850AD (0): Take a look at the map. We are clearly in a superior position. Hit F1 and cycle through each city to see what is what. I tweak some worker assignments such as on St. Petersburg, which is size 12, to maximize shields and get 0 growth. For the 1 shield French cities, I maximize food production.

Overall impressions: 1) We need workers ; 2) We need more military units; and 3) Lots of Improvements needed in our outer cities.

I also tweak the science/lux rate. Lux 0, Science 60%. This brings us econ in 3 turns, with 54 gpt.

The Forbidden Palace: I look at Paris, Avignon, and Orleans as possible sites. I don’t think Paris will be anything but a 1 shield, even with a courthouse. Plus, it is on the Southern Coast. We would lose some of its benefit there. Orleans is a serious contender. It is more centered geographically to counter-balance Moscow. But then I look at its overlap with Astrakhan. Not good. So that leaves us with Avignon. I rush build a courthouse there.

I also rush build settlers in Chartres and Tours. I will fill the empty area west of Chartres and the hole NW of Paris, on the river. This site will be right next to our FP. Prime real estate.

I rushbuild a temple in Dijon to put more cultural pressure on the little Jap city (Yokahama) that they snuck in to the SE.

I switch Minsk to a placeholder palace. It will be our pre-build for Adam Smith.

Diplo Check: The Japs are in awe of us and are 2 techs behind.
The Babs are 3 techs ahead with Printing Press, Chemistry and Economics. They also have some available wines, the one luxury that we don’t have. I am tempted to trade for the wine, but why? We have plenty of luxuries and no threats of revolts, except in xxxxxxxxxxxxx. Trading for them would only benefit the Babs.
The Persians are the same 3 techs ahead.
Ghandi is PP and Chem ahead.
China is up the 3 techs.

I check on our workers. Unfortunately, I find several who are working spots that none of our cities can use. I reassign them.

The next question is who do we want to trounce next? I don’t see that we can be ready for another war in my 10 turns. But we can plan it out.

Hit Enter

860AD (1) Slider bar to 5/5/0. Still 2 turns, 94gpt.

Worker assignments are the priority. Particular focus on the FP and wonder cities.

Hit Enter

The Chinese want to trade territory maps. I see no reason to do so. I pull the maps off the table and put up 1 gold. My reasoning is that they are “Polite” right now and we are showing a willingness to trade.

A pop-up message saying that the Chinese and Persians are building Copernicus.

870AD (2) Grozny founded on the southern coast.

Slider checked to maximize revenue for next turn while still getting Econ.

Hit Enter.

880AD (3) We get Econ. Chemistry due up in 4 turns with a 6/4/0 slider set.

Dnepropetrovsk is founded in open area due west of Avignon.

I give serious consideration to trading an excess ivory to the Chinese for Printing Press, WM and 3 gpt. The issue is whether we want to go after Democracy. If our goal is physical domination, then we probably don’t want to go for Democ as war weariness will be a big problem. With any of the other methods, I would do this trade in a second and switch our research to democracy.

Minsk switched to Adam Smith. Due in 25 as currently configured. It will grow to 12 next turn, and I am mining 2 new squares.

Hit Enter

890AD (4) Worker movement. Nothing spectacular.

900AD (5) Ditto. Did a Diplo check. Nothing new to report.

910AD (6) The Babs offer Printing Press for 100GP. I take it.

The Babs probably found Democracy and now have shopped it around to everyone. Everyone but us has it.

Minsk’s mined hills come on board. I allocate citizens to that spot and arrange it for max shields and –1 food. We will get Adam Smith before we lose a person from starvation.

Adjust slider to 7/3/0 and still get Chemistry in 1 turn. 220 gpt income right now.

920 AD (7) Slider back to 6/4/0. Metallurgy in 4.

930AD (8) Vladivotok grows to size 11 and revolts. I give them an entertainer. They will get a courthouse soon.

940AD (9) We lose our spices from China. This causes Avignon, our FP building city, to riot. I call China up and get our spices back. I also call up the Babs to get us so potent potables. While in these trades, I notice that everyone has metallurgy and democracy.

950AD (10) Worker movement. Diplo check: Everyone is either Cautious or Annoyed.

Japs are 2 tech behind.
Babs are Democracy and Metallurgy ahead
Ditto the Persians
Ditto the Indians
Ditto the Chinese

Metallurgy comes next turn. Slider still at 6/4/0.

My first succession turn comes to a close.

I was thinking that Monarch would be appropriate. But if you want to try Emperor, why not? :)

I know that I need to get the save file uploaded. I have to figure out how to do that. I know that I read how somewhere around here........

To upload a file (a zipped game save or screenshot, usually) go down to the very bottom of the screen and you will see a button called "Upload File". Hit this and choose the file to be uploaded from your computer. Then for a save game, create a link to the file using the "http://" button just above the response area. For screenshots, do the same but use the "IMG" button instead. :)

I'm happy with the attention to detail mentioned in Ridgelake's first writeup; I'm not going to open up the save game and comment (which I can't do anyway at the moment ;)) but it looks good from here. SUL3 is officially closing, as I believe we have reached the point beyond which little can be learned. If it were a normal succession game, I'd want to finish it, but for the purposes of teaching, we will get more out of starting a new game. So consider SUL3 a victory for us (not that there was any real doubt on Regent) :goodjob:

I hope to have the first turn for the new game posted within the next few hours.

Yeh in the movie its spelled Imhotep but I like to be different and plus I'm so used to typing the H first that I dont think I COULD switch now if I wanted

I have my computer fixed!!
Ill play!

Oh dear... You said "The game is won for all practical purposes" so I wanted to play for the score. This game deserves to go in my high socre list, I need something to push out the crappy 478 CHieftain score.
