SW9 - Malicious Mali

Since we’re going for a UN victory population is the key to our success. Even though currently we are #1 in population I decide to adjust things to make that lead even higher. My first decision is to switch off of Free Markets and go for Environmentalism. This will give us an additional +6 health for every city. I’ll move troops over to our GP factory and switch to growth there too. Unless things go wrong with the UN victory will hopefully be ours on the next player’s turn set. Edit: Must be tired, as I didn't take into account the time it would require to build the UN. :crazyeye:

Turn 284 (1828 AD)

Turn 287 (1834 AD)

Turn 288 (1836 AD)
Tech learned: Mass Media
Timbuktu finishes: Colosseum
Methos: That’s messed up. Asoka comes along and demands we cancel our deals with Saladin. Since Saladin is annoyed with us and Asoka is cautious I agree. As soon as I agree and exit the diplomacy screen the two of them make peace.

Turn 289 (1838 AD)
Research begun: Steam Power
Timbuktu begins: The United Nations

A few suggestions:
  • Timbuktu has a couple forest tiles that do not have lumber mills. I have workers on one of them building one now, but the other tile needs to be improved too. Since we’re building the UN here this city needs its production increased quickly.
  • I’ve set every city to ‘emphasize food’, so we can grow quicker. The more population we have the more votes we have.
  • Kumbi Saleh (our GP factory) is maxing out on available tiles. All extra citizens should be set on engineer for the possibility of getting a great engineer.
  • We should probably start switching tiles over to irrigation or watermills to increase our population. I started doing that on the island, but that’s it.

Tech wise I wasn’t for sure what route to go. I currently have it set on Steam Power as we can have Railroads researched in 17 turns. I didn’t really think too hard on this (okay, not at all) so don’t hesitate to switch this to something else. I have no idea what we want to research next.

Edit: It might be wise to research Democracy next (would be done in four) so we can switch to Universal Suffrage. This would allow us to cash rush the UN. I don’t see a reason to continue teching after that anyway so we could set the slider on 100% wealth. Out of curiosity I went back and set it to wealth and we would be making 624 gpt at this time. It currently would cost 7200 gold to rush the UN. So four turns of research for Democracy and than 100% wealth should have it finished in two turn sets.

We will probably have to lower our research rate soon as we’re losing money. We might even want to consider upping our culture slider for increased happiness.

Here's a couple of screenshots of our population amount at the beginning and end of my turn set.

Again, my apologies. I keep forgetting about this one for some reason. I believe since we're focusing on stories and not discussing strategy it slips my mind easily.

Can't get to it until Wednesday, so if someone has time tonight, feel free to take it.

Tried to get to this last night, but my wife got word that her grandfather is dying. This morning, we were informed that the doctors don't expect him to make it through the day.

I'm out of pocket for at least this weekend. Skip me. I see victory on the horizon, and if it happens, congrats! Wish I could contribute more.

Go ahead Locki. I can't till Saturday.

Alexander of Greece looked out over his kingdom from his Throne. His was a great nation founded by both warriors and great thinkers, but Alexander's warrior blood craved more. More Land, More Power. Where to invade he thought. Obviously there was the Mali to the south of Greece, but he could not. The Mali had long been Greece's friend, for thousands of years infact. They were also the only other nation of true belivers in the One True God. To invade the Mali would be to defy God himself whom proclaimed his holy city as Timbuktu the capital of the Mali nation. Instead, Alexander thought, let us hold out our hand to our friend. King Robert of the Locky was the leader of Mali, and have gifted Alexander a personal radio, one of the Mali's new inventions. Greece's scientists were baffled when told of the thing but it could send sound through the air from long distances. The Mali where even sending music over now. But Alexander's one was special, it could send sound direct to King Robert of Locky, and so Alexander invinted Robert for a visit. Two weeks later Robert and Alexander were sitting ontop the Great Lighthouse of Athens, eating oysters when Alexander decided to tell his friend of his grand idea. "Robert", he said, "our nations have been friends since before time and that is why I have written up this proposal for a Defensive Pact." Alexander felt pleased but then Robert spoke, "Alex, mate, the world is changing, there is no need for these defensive pacts, the world is growing closer and closer together, the world is becoming one nation. There will be no more wars, no more argurements between leaders, for there will only be one leader." Alexander was astounded, not only had his friend refused his proposal, he had then told him that he would no longer leader of Greece, no longer would Greece be Greece. That was the last day the two leaders sat as friends.

It was a cold, wet morning 16 years later to the day since their last meeting that Alex received word from President Robert, (for the monarchs rule had been revoked yet Robert somehow remained in power) that he was to send his foriegn and diplomatic advisory team to Timbuktu for a world conference. Alex had no idea what this was about but agreed to send his team of advisors. 2 days later his chief aide sent word back, "King Alex, the Mali have built a fantastic building for the world conference, it is huge, with permanent offices for people from all the nations of the world. It is called the United Nations." Alex put the letter down, for he suddenly understood what Robert had spoken of atop the lighthouse. His one nation, one leader dream was becoming reality. "It is the end" was all his wife got in reply when inquiring what was wrong.

1838 - Inherinted Turn

IBT - Asoka ask for help wanting Physics. Do not comply. Coventry revolts to us and I take it.

1840 - Moved workers to hills at coventry

IBT - Nothing

1842 - Mine Hills near Coventry. Continue lumber mills around Timbuktu

IBT - Alexander comes offering a Defensive Pact. Hmmmm. We are going for U.N victory and defensive pacts do bring neagative points from other civs. I also don't see Alexander attacking us, nor anyone else yet. Can always counter offer later on. Decline Defensive Pact.

1844 - Move workers. Trade Physics for Democracy with Fredrick. The quicker we can get the U.N the better.

IBT - Alexander asks us to cancel deals with Asoka. I refuse and we drop from Friendly to Pleased. Might have been a bad choice.

1846 - Discover Steam Power. Source of Coal near Tadmeka on our east island. Turn science to 0%.

IBT - Nothing

1848 - Nothing

IBt - Elizabeth gives Steel + 280 gold for medicine. Accept. Alexander wants horses for copper. Accept.

1850 - Nothing

IBT - Nothing

1852 - Nothing

IBT - Nothing

1854 - Next turn will have enough gold to rush U.N. Revolt to Universal Sufferage.

IBT - Fredrick wants to give us Coal for Silk. Decline because we are mining some now.

1856 - Unhapiness in our big cities except Timbuktu. 4 more turns until we can change back to Hereditry Rule.

IBT - Nothing.

1858 - U.N nations built in Timbuktu. Set Timbuktu to start building Eifiel Tower it will be done in 16 turns without rushing.

Afterthought - We will probably have shift back to Heireditary Rule for Hapiness or go to Representation. U.N elections will come up next turn.

Sorry guys, but this week has been extremely hectic for me. Have barely been able to keep up with discussions, let alone take part in them. Add to the hectic week is the fact I’ll be gone all weekend long. I’ve leaving Friday (April 7th) and getting back on Sunday (April 9th). Please skip me until than. Absolutely no internet access (I’ll be caving this weekend).

Thanks,
Methos
