Speak for yourself, sonny. I used to live in the Turkish part of North London and I love the food. Yes, kebabs are great when you're coming home from the pub at night. But you can buy any kind of kebab all day. There's nothing unhealthy about them and in fact make a balanced meal of meat, veg and pita bread. You call it "lower class". I call it working class and damn proud of it.
w3rd, stoke newington has some AMAZING turkish restaurants..
and if one is really snobby, its possible to get upper class shwarmas too!
Maroush in Edgware road was doing them for £12 3 years ago last time i was there, im sure it'll be up to £17-18 by now.
Kebab has become one the Finnish national dishes w/ pizza.. I'm not that much kebab fan anymore - I still have some trauma about the time when I ate very hot one while drunk and it wanted to come back next morning.

I know Stoke Newington really well. My favourite Turkish patisserie is still there I hope. I lived off Green Lanes in Harringey where its all Turkish Cypriot plus Kurdish. Best fresh veg in London, everybody open 24/7 and dozens of great restaurants and kebab houses. Love "mezes", 12-15 dishes per sitting, everybody shares. Real "culture", sadly unavailable in Cornwall, where I live now.
