Tech Tree Discussion

OK, I will also update Yoruba to cost 115 so it matches the rest of column X26. The Resurrection prerequisite on Voodoo is also redundant now that it's required for Fundamentalism so I will make Voodoo just Fundamentalism + Yoruba.

That's fine, however Islam also has a redundancy with Fundamentalism & Resurrection.

As for the tree I am worried about Nationalism having the arrows go back on themselves. You also really spread out those science techs. They could just as easily be put in closer blocks taking up 4 columns rather than 7. But whatever you think is best since you know the tree better.

@Vokarya:

Go ahead on those Renaissance changes. I'd prefer though o wait on the Industrial and Modern eras though, I think they are pretty good for now. Great work on this complex and grueling issue though! :goodjob:

Well, the Industrial Era is done on paper and just needs a little time to do XML coding. My problem with the Industrial Era is some over-weighted columns: X59 is full while X60 has only three techs. I haven't really looked at the Modern Era beyond a brief glance to figure out the basic parameters.

I'll wait to see if Hydro has anything to say before I update the SVN. For big changes like these, I'd like to get a couple of approvals.

I'll fix the Islam redundancy as well on my next upload.

How about this for Nationalism?
  • Move Social Contract back one column, and move Meteorology up one column to balance.
  • Swap Colonialism and Economics.

You get this:

and then the Nationalism arrows don't go back on themselves.

The reason for the science techs being spread out is that I'm trying to keep the levels together in columns. It worked out like this:
  • Level 1: 6 techs, 1 column (X42)
  • Level 2: 7 techs, 1 column (X43)
  • Level 3: 10 techs, 2 columns (X44 - X45)
  • Level 4: 8 techs, 1 column (X46) -- Sikhism is level 4 but I moved it back to X44 to be next to Critical Thought, so only 7 techs in this column
  • Level 5: 10 techs, 2 columns (X47-X48)
  • Level 6: 10 techs, 2 columns (X49-X50)
  • Level 7: 8 techs, 2 columns (X51-X52)
  • Level 8: 4 techs, 1 column (X53)

I'm trying to arrange the tree so we have space in every column and therefore we have the most flexibility to place any new tech ideas that come along. I don't like packing the columns too densely. If you really want, I can move Representative Democracy, Corporation, and the last column of techs all back one column, so you get 6 techs in X51, 6 techs in X52, and then X53 is empty. That would lower the costs a little more if I stick to the cost-by-column scheme.

@Vokarya

Here are icon/buttons for tech that did not have their own unique icon/button. Included are ...

- Antimatter Rocket
- Attometer Engineering
- Dual-flux Quantum Temporal Rift
- Extraterrestrial Agriculture
- Orbital Megastructures
- Photonic Satellites
- VASIMR Propulsion

Thanks! :goodjob:

Since you just gave me one (scriptures) why not them all? @Vokarya I'll do them.:D

Minor Article- Why some technologies fail.
http://boingboing.net/2012/10/03/why-some-technologies-fail-an.html

quote from article
'The technologies we use today aren't necessarily the best technologies that were available. We don't really make these decisions logically, based solely on what works best. It's more complicated than that. Technology is shaped sociocultural forces. And, in turn, it shapes them, as well. The best analogy I've come up with to summarize this: The history of technology isn't a straight line. It's more like a ball of snakes..' (snaking)... [word sub]

hope it's useful

I was just wondering how your tribe is meant to have been living pre-nomadic lifestyle. I'd like to know how to imagine it when the game's just started.

Its more about navigation and knowing the seasons. Such as going to warmer climates in the winter. Those that don't know it basically are wandering with no direction (or even staying put) and don't recall where they have been before. Once you discover it you retain he knowledge of where you have been and at what part of the year you should go there.

Whats why units like the Wanderer can move 2 moves instead of 1. He knows the best paths and quickest ways, that would take other units longer to get through. Its not that a Wanderer walks faster its that he can navigate better.

I guess also that Nomadic Lifestyle was just chosen way back when as an arbitrary start point.

Well in the very beginning they were suppose to be the 2 starting techs every civ got. But then it never happened and then got adapted to where no civ got ANY starting tech (unless you play on the lowest difficulty).

I think this don't really fit in here, but I have no idea where it would fit better:

I realized that in the late renaissance/early industrial era the Lightbulb from GPs just give as much Science as I produce in one turn. That's not really usefull... I think they should give AT LEAST Techcost/2 Sciencepoints or maybe research the tech completely.

Although I have some sympathy for this point of view, I don't think we can keep scaling up the GP power, because the rate at which you generate GPs tends to accelerate too - it's no very hard to be getting one very 4 or 5 turns by early industrial, so if each gives a full tech they becomes a little OP IMO.

Does someone plan to rebuild modern and TH era tech tree?

I ask because I have some ideas but if someone plan to do it i want to wait for his result before i will make my sugesstions.

EDIT
Why my avatar did not show? I added picture to my profile.

The rate you get GP should be flat across era that is why the second G Artist costs more than the first. Perhaps the "costs" need to be to be balanced.

It needs to be under a maximum size (kb).

We've done this twice now in the past six months, I don't really want to go through that again.
