Who are the worlds most advanced nations on earth, not the biggest economy, but the four fronts in technology?

I think it's either Japan or South Korea! :D

The U.S., Japan and Western Europe come close, but the U.S. seems to be more on the cutting edge. However it is difficult to say with the onset of globalization.

The reason the U.S. is still the world's biggest economy is that it maintains its position by maintaining a technological advantage. While the advantage is certainly shrinking, the U.S. still only tends to produce the goods that are technologically ahead of the rest of the world, while importing the products that are the status quo. But globalization is definitely bringing everybody up to par rather quickly.

Germany is way ahead of the states; i mean the Germans make the best cars, at the cheapest price, along with Japans monster power base of Toyota's, Honda’s, Nissans, and Mitsubishis. :goodjob:

What does America make,…..Ford! :thumbdown

With that logic, Italy is the most technologically advanced country in the world.

Then why don't you define what you mean by 'technologically advanced'??

And don't let turn into nation bashing!

Yeah but, hold on Italy do not make good "quality" Automotives. Having a powerful economy is not good enough; you must be the leader in scientific researched and discoveries!

Cars are technology from 19st century. And in no way car companies are symbol of progress. Science is. Cars are not science. Period.

How are Germany and Japan doing is space exploration? Have they been on Moon, sent satellites to outer Solar System?
How about ssemiconductors? Are intel or AMD or Motorola or IBM from Japan? Modern Chemistry?
Military advances?

Don't make me bring Sony into this thread or Samsung! Oh Japan would of had an Advance Aerospace industry, but you at the end of World War 2 told them they could not build military aircrafts. I don't know if the ban has been lifted! :D

Well American cars perhaps :p

But , this is the problem with not having an agreeed definition of what "technologically advenced" means. To me science is not exactly technology, although they are related, cars certainly are technology and that's the topic of the thread.

So we measure a nation's technological progress by the car it creates?

Granted, Germany does make the best cars, but that doesn't matter. Sony and Samsung aren't even developed in the same country. We've got the internet, microsoft, motorola, GE...

I'd agree that the U.S is the most advanced either technologically or in pure research.

But there are a lot of tech companys in Japan. Apart from Sony you have Hitachi (bullet trains, tunneling equip- e.g. channel tunnel); Kawasaki (rocket technology) NTT (advanced nano-tech research and applications), Honda (robotics as well as cars) Sharp, Mitsu****a, Toshiba, there are also a huge number of small to medium size tech enterprises - an employee of one of these was awarded a nobel prize two years ago.

Edit- the profanity filter wont let me type one of those company names :)

Germany has AMD's biggest fab, the Dresden Fab. In semiconductors, the Taiwanese are rather significant. For consumer electronics, Japan and S. Korea. In number of English speaking college grads produced each year, the US is 1st trailed by India. It really depends on how you measure it. If you use Nobel Prize winners, then it is obviously the US. However, if you look at communications infrastructure, S.Korea has largest % of pop. with broadband. However, in Japan, braodband is an average of 10mb/s. It is really hard to say as it depends upon what criteria you use.

Like I said in my first post, the gap is narrowing, but US still holds lead.

Sure- we have no disagreement, I just wanted to point out that there is a lot more to Japan's tech sector than Sony- of course, you were probably aware of that anyway.

Cars aren't advancing, it is just electronics inside them.

I'm sure the car manufactures would be very suprised to hear that. Advances have and continue to be made in virtually every aspect of an automobile- including advances in the technology used to manufacture them.
