Technology tree thoughts

Well obsoletion would solve some of your objections (if Slavery/Monarchy became Obsolete in the Industrial Era then you could have your 'noncontradictory system'

Absolutely, I've already stated this elsewhere.

I thought the techtree was kind of short; but then again, I've been playing RoM with all its extra techs for so long that I forgot what the Vanilla tech-tree looked like.

If you look properly at the video, and the scrolling bar on the bottom you will notice the tech tree is actually huge!!!

Steel and education are already visible, and they havent even scrolled 1/3 of the entire tree :(

Dont forget that technology in our real world has progressed in such a way that there are more "future" technologies we can think off, and some technologies we never could have thought off 5 years ago.

Agriculture, or some generic starting tech that gives all the initial benefits (maybe roads, farms, settlers, workers, warrior).

New you tube vid has been removed but what i gleamed from it first:

Iroqouis Empire - Great Warpath - Only 1 movementpoint spent on entering a forest tile, so they act like walking on grassland when in forests.

Romans - Glory Thingy - 20% production bonus to producing buildings that are already in capital.
(Awesome)

Next tile to be consumed by culture is outlined in pink/purple in the city screen.

Some of the social policy trees block others from being unlocked. You start with 3 at the start of the game.

City states stand out thanks to thier striped boarders, increasing your influence increases the benefit they give you. Culture, UU Gifts, or extra food.

Research pacts cost gold to set up, so you wouldn't want to make one with someone who might break it part way through the duration.

Combat boxes are slightly different from waht we've already seen, indicates likely damage, and has a two strength values, original and modified i think, was a little blurry.

Combat seems to be just fine not unbalanced, but i only got a look at a small partly scripted battle so only a general impression.

Shame the vid has been removed would have liked to watch again for enjoyment.

@Ariman, Sounds reasonable. It also seemed to be fully researched at the start (Yellow), so not something you'll have to work towards like in civ 4, basic stuff right off the bat.

I somehow expected the UAs to be an activated ability like the legendary spell in Fall from Heaven :)

This sounds much more awesome. It seems perks (or what were the specializations called in IV, I was playing a little too much Modern Warfare 2 lately) didn't make it though... ?!

What you mean traits, philosical trait, aggresive trait. No thats no longer there. But new tratits are in personality traits to give different civ AIs different behaiviours.

Victoria likes her coastal cities and fleets, so shell try to conquer nearby coastal cities. Napoleon's an expansive warlike chap, and likes his siege units. better not get in his way. etc.

As for the first tech encompassing roads, the wheel is a tech i saw, so I think roads are under that, right?

Thats certainly likely, not definite. But that would be my bet.

So roads are out.

First tech - Farms, Warrior, Worker & Settler?

Ya just double checked, under the wheel you can clearly see a road pic.

Also under mining their is an axe, possibly for tree chopping? Under bronze working there is another same axe, maybe for chopping jungle? What do you think?

Looking back over the teach screen yes roads come from wheel, either that or railroads, couldn't be anything else.

Also noticed the unit symbol/picture for longswordsman in the steel area, which in previous civs was the tech for cannons, so thier is a medival swordsman there. (We haven't seen the normal swordsman from iron working yet)

Also gunpowder unlocks musketman units, told that by the picture again, although everyone could have guessed that.

@ tyler ryan 79

yes that was my thoughts too on wood chopping. Interesting to look at all the unit pictures in that tree once you've seen em in the videos.

If you look at the first page of this thread under mercade pic he posted in the spoiler button you can see the roads very clearly. Also there are 9 spike ball looking symbols in a few techs. I wonder what these represent, maybe social policies? I wish we had clearer pics of the tree in the video, it showed much more of the tree I think. Also the first tech only has one icon, but I can't make it out on my phone.

I was referring to taht picture/screenshot in my posts. And yes the video showed a lot more techs, but it was far too blurry to make out.

(As to why i said it could be a road or a railroad, i was merely stating that that symbol looks more like a railroad, as it has little tracks joining the two lines, but yes it is a road

There were several reasons I abandoned Civ3 but the main reason was the forced tech tree - i.e., having to research all of the techs in an era before moving on to the next one, as well as hardcoding research rates. I love the way research is done in Civ4 (and Civ2, if I recall) where you can shoot down a line (and backfill by trading and quick research later). I really hope Civ5 allows this.

There's no tech trading. But the rest is as in Civ4 I think.

from the screenshot you can see the player has researched gunpowder without filling up the medieval era. So i think your hopes may just be fuffiled.

I was somewhat hoping for a new way of researching techs', and not something so similar to civ 3 and 4. When I say something new, I mean something that is not so 'the same'. It looks like it is practically identical to earlier civ versions.

Works for me.
