TGW-Div 1.6 -- World War I

Sure, PM me your email address, I will send you the BIQ file!

Ottoman Empire:
In an attempt to re-establish communications with Trabzon, Ottoman artillery bombards Russian sabotage units. Ottoman Inf attacks and manages to defeat a small Russian detachment that destroyed the railway.
Russian losses: 2 Inf, 1 Cav. No Ottoman losses.
Sultan Mehmet sends a messenger to his allies and asks urgently for coal! The Ottoman Railway is running out of steam, and the situation in Armenia begins to get critical.

Austria-Hungaria:
The Austrian fleet starts a heavy bombardment of Venice as revenge for the recent shelling of our Isonzo position. This reveals that currently two Italian Marshalls are stationed in Venice: Cardozo and Diaz! This means they could already be close to finishing the third Army and therefore the Pentagon. This must be prevented. Marshall von Hötzendorff immediately calls for a conference with Moltke and Hindenburg and they draw up a plan to try and defeat at least one Italian Army. During night and fogg some Austrian troups desert thier positions along the Isonzo to make way for German replacement troops. Hötzendorff decides to make good use of the now free troops by launching a major offensive against Serbia. Austrian railway is busy first transporting all Isonzo troops to the Serbian front, and then cooperating with the German railway for transporting German troops from France to the Isonzo and from France to Serbia. If we can achieve a breakthrough in Servia, contact with Osmania will finally be re-established, allowing urgently needed coal to be exported to Osmania again.

Germany:
A German railway gun continues bombardment of Venice. Then Inf A Army Ruprecht and one Flamethrower Army begin the first Isonzo Battle. The Italians are completely taken by surprise, but put up a tough defense.
Ruprecht 20/20 --> Cadorna 11/12: Ruprecht 2/20 :eek:
This nut is tougher than expected. The other Army (Diaz) is now "covered" by 3/4 MG, so not attackable (too much bombardment...) Therefore, as the main objective is achieved, the offensive is stopped and German troops fortify in the trenches that Italian workers were so nice to dig up for them last week... :)

The other German Armies are employed for other equally important matters: the Austrian offensive in Serbia has to be supported.
Flamethrower Army attacks Russian MG nest in Novi Pazar but has to retreat with 1/12. Hindenburg makes a second try and wins. Moltke follows up and takes Novi Pazar! Uff, three German Armies necessary to take this lousy town... But we couldn't wait for artillery support to be in place. Speed is everything on the Balkans. Ludendorff and one other Army march on to Skopje.

Other theaters of war: 2 Battleships bombard Copenhagen. German R Infantry then takes it.

Ah, here was the Russian Fleet, not in Riga... German Light Cruisers bombard and sink 3 Russian ships and a submarine. No losses.

Zeppelin bombardment and artillery destroy all railway connections to Besancon. The isolated city is now the target for the next German major offensive, as the French won't be able to bring reinforcements to the front in time. Also the railway north of Brussels is destroyed.

This was my longest turn so far... partly because I had to think a bit about what the current priorities are, but mostly because I had to keep an eye on the kids today. So it was like 5 min play -- 10 min "Papa, come and look!!"...

Too bad this scenario does not reflect how Germany starved to defeat because of the Naval blocade...
No, not really, see Berlin:
attachment.php

And this is, after I have already changed half the irrigations to mines to get some decent production. :D

I don't have a unit strong enough to kill a single German division...
I think the Russian strategy for this scenario is to play absolutely defensively until they have caught up in tech and can produce some decent attackers. Meanwhile they should use their large numbers to create a bit of disturbance in Eastern Germany (but carefully, using hills, forests & trenches, not in flatland), so that Germany can throw it's entire power on the Western Front. While Germany is busy beating back the intruders, the Western Allies can make slow progress in the west.
At the moment I have a definitive advantage, because it's only a single-front war. (And because I managed to destroy a large Russian force and a large part of the French artillery. I think artillery and Armies are key to this scenario. And for the Germans also railway, so they can play "oscillating war" like Friedrich II did in the Seven Years War, where little Preußen survived against an alliance of Russia, Austria-Hungaria and France, three super-powers at that time.)

Anyway, this scenario is highly interesting, and much better than against the AI. I have no idea how long the West will need to get to tanks, and whether I will be able to knock out a sufficiently large part of France till then.

I know just exactly what you mean. Whenever it's my turn to watch the kids I get the same questions. I usually tell them "Daddy needs just 5 more minutes to finish moving this stack of ships!". LOL

The news of Besancon and the Isonzo battles have the Entente very concerned. Steps must be taken to prevent an Italian collapse. We hope that our German guest enjoy the trenchworks that were built for them! :)

Must be some coincidence in the Universe of Civ-ers, for some mysterious reason no school today, so I am watching my Kinder too

In a major feat of Russian shipbuilding first Russian Dreadnought battleship Imperatritsa Mariya has been commissioned in Batumi! Our cool battleship immediately shelled Trapzond yellow-lining Turkish Infantry there.

Meanwhile our Baltic Fleet was completely annihilated! Even pre-dreadnought Slava was sunk by pesky German CLs, how unfair !

Our colonists in Middle Asia finally started to send some saltpeter and Incense for the Empire. Some traditionalist suspect that Incense is in fact some sort of Opium :mischief:, but 2 faces went happy in every Russian city nevertheless. And saltpeter means we can finally build a coastal fortress in routinely bombarded Riga...

Meanwhile Serbia braces for worst. Because of the stupid war with Neutrals -- no rubber arrives from Russia, and therefore no Strong troops can be built. All the available men conscripted, last minute Bomb shelters, increasing defense to 50% were built. In the effort to raise money government sold Universities, Banks, Libraries and even one Church. That was a mistake -- Nish citizen begun to grumble and only an arrival of folk entertainers appeased distressed masses!

Week 36-37, 1914

France

No action to report on the French sector of the Western Front. The French are paralyzed with the series of tragedies which they've endured.

Britain

In the third week of the Royal Navy shelling of Antwerp every defeding unit is redlined. The shelling is so fierce that 70,000 people (i.e. 7 points of population) lose their lives. Many buildings are reduced to rubble including:

  • Stock Exchange
  • Barracks
  • Recycling Center
  • Marketplace
  • Coal Plant

Meanwhile British Marines conduct a surprise amphibious assault against Tabuk in the Red Sea. The Turks lose 1 unit of Turkish Infantry for no losses to the British.

At the end of week 36 the Neutrals declare war on Italy!! This action triggers the other Entente powers into declaring war on the Neutrals. Europe is now completely aflame with all nations pitted against each other. All of this because of one man's pistol shot against an archduke.

Italy

Italian forces continue mobilization and mount no attacks other then a small artillery barrage against our German guests outside of Venice. During this brief artillery barrage Italian reconnaissance units run into a squad commanding by a young German officer. One of the Italian soldiers, who happens to understand German, overhears a German Seargent call out to his commanding officer by name for further instructions. It is learned that the German office is a man not too many have heard of before. His name; Erwin Rommel.

Did not have time to play yesterday. Hope I will get the turn done tonight, but there are also other urgent tasks to finish: GOTM99 is due this week, and still some work left on that one, and "HoF 3" is another PBEM game, where turns currently take 1-2 hours...

Lanzelot

What happened to all your other PBEM game signatures? :) With all the hectic life I could only commit to 2 games max. if they are too many, I can't enjoy the details -- my favorite feature in Civ :)

Now the sh... really hits the fan... :D

Normally I can handle 5 games. Two of them are still in the beginning with only two towns to manage (so around 10 min per turn), and also all players are still active, so it takes a week between two turns.

Only TGW and HoF are a lot of work (I'm a micro-manager myself, and there are so many cities to improve, a lot of tiles to mine and railroad to improve production etc.)
And the few free hours I had this weekend I had to spend on GOTM99, don't want to miss the deadline again...

Ottoman Empire:
Nothing of importance. Ottoman artillery continues bombardment of the Russian intruders.

Austria-Hungaria:
Bombardment of Nish reveals 5 defenders! Too much. Austria would risk too many losses and promote all of the defenders to elite, so we only attack with our new formed Austrian Inf Army, killing one of the defender. This will be a slow siege.

Germany:
Ludendorff and another Inf Army attack Skopje twice each and gain a promotion:
Ludendorff 20/20 --> 10/23
Army 16/16 --> 11/19
Skopje still defended by conscripts! We need to continue the siege next turn. Serbia delays the Mittelmächte longer than expected.

The West Front witnesses another artillery bombardment that the world has not yet seen before. Zeppelins join in and even a new railgun fresh from the factories. 11 defenders are revealed and most of them redlined 1/4, three remain 2/4

German losses: Flamethrower, 10 Inf A (one elite!), 2 Inf R (one elite!)
French losses: 2 Inf A, 6 Inf R, MG, Inf T, 3 artillery pieces.

Many of the French Infs were promoted all the way from 1/4 to 6/8 and caused high German losses. On German side two new elite promotions.

In Venice Diaz has recovered back to 9/12 and is now stronger than the MGs, so top of the defending stack. Unfortunately Germany has no healed Army available at the moment to take advantage of that situation...

I noticed something strange: some cities, which clearly have barracks, produce only regular units?!?

The German people receives the news about the battle of Besancon with mixed feelings. Many have to mourn the loss of a relative and also they are sad about the death of so many French fine young men. The German public is outraged about the bloody massaker of French citizens that the British Navy wreaked on Antwerpen! The British are barbarians, not civilized European citizens!

I noticed something strange: some cities, which clearly have barracks, produce only regular units?!?

Only capitals should produce veteran units, barracks just add 25% to the production.

Nothing to report, really. Bombarded Erzerum amd Trapezund. Neutrals advance in Finland. Very sad about Besanson, was sure it will hold longer! We should of send all the available Armies there until workers would repair the road...

Week 37-38, 1914

France

This war is so far not going well for the French. Caught now in a two front war between the Neutrals and Germany France is feeling the pressure. No action to report in the West other than fortifying our lines.

Britain

For a solid month now Antwerp has been the scene of much bloodshed. Will the killing ever stop? The British public dismisses the accusations of barbarism by it's enemy. This is war after all and of course people are going to perish. The bombardment continues and the BEF launches it's all out attack against Antwerp! Three German HMGs are taken down for no losses. A large force has massed in the outskirts of Antwerp which is now completely cut off from the road network connecting it to the rest of German held territory.

edit: Forgot to mention that the Royal Navy shelled Rotterdam redlining the defender there and destroying the Stock Exchange and the Barracks.

Italy

Diaz gets his day of rest! Italy takes no action in the Venice front however Tirana is feared lost. There has been great damage to the country side in Albania and the refugees have no where to run other than to what is still held by Russia in Serbia.

I understand Lanzelot. No worries mate. Good luck with the GOTM99.

British War Minister:

"We eagerly await our opponents response to our counteroffensive. Meanwhile our boys will get some much needed rest." :)

Ottoman Empire:
Submarine sinks neutral destroyer. Bombardment of Russian forces in Armenia continues.
4 Ottoman Inf attack a lonely Cossack, but all 4 die!!!
Battle in the Black sea: Sultan Selim bombards Imperatritsa Mariya. Submarine sinks light cruiser.
Kemal, back from Hospital, kills a neutral Cavalry, that ventured too far into Ottoman territory.

Austria-Hungaria:
Armored Car Army Conrad attacks and takes Antivari. 8/12. Franz-Josef is proud that
the this time the German support troops that were already standing by, were not needed!
Continued bombardment of Nish. Attack is left for German Army.

Germany:
German Fleet bombards Göteborg, Inf takes it.
Light Cruiser sinks neutral destroyer, but is heavily damaged (2/8).
Neutrals are now willing to sign peace... :D Do you know what is very bad about the fact they have recently declared war on the western allies as well? My original plan was to protect my north-western flank by giving the Netherlands' coastal cities back to the Neutrals in the peace treaty and that way stop the annoying British bombardment as well as any land offensive along the difficult to defend flat lands. That's now impossible...
Anyway, peace is signed and Germany occupies a large part of Arabia... (You were right: the peace also counts for Austria and Ottomania.)

Railguns and Zeppelins bombard Army Group Haig.

Cavalry picks up a forgotten French artillery piece...

Army 10/19 attacks conscript Russian Inf (2/2) and survives by a hair 1/19!
Inf R takes out the last Russian artillery nests and captures Skopje. Happily the German soldiers shake hands with their Ottoman comrades! Contact is finally reestablished and immediately trade agreements are signed. Urgently needed coal is sent to Istanbul in exchange for saltpeter.

After slight artillery preparation, German elite Infantry takes Tirana.
This ends the German Balkan campaign.

Russian troops marching towards Posen are covered with artillery and then attacked by Inf A. Russian losses: 7 Inf, 1 combat engineer is taken prisoner of war.

Great victory at Black Sea!

Around 1600 hour Russian mine layers from Sevastopol, aka "Floating Mine" detected lightly damaged BC Yavuz, former German Elite BC Goeben, trying to escape to Samsun. The most powerful ship of Central Powers on Black Sea for some strange reason was not hiding in Trabson, and preferred instead to steam westward. What a luck! Pre-Dreadnought Evstafiy shelled Turkish Navy's Flagship from a long range, scoring one hit. Russian flagship Imperatritsa Mariya, which was hit by Yavuz just 12 hours ago chased Yavuz to the very doors of Samsun and the battle began! Turkish Flagship turned to yellow first, but then Mariya got 3 hits, one after another. German crew of Turkish ship was fighting till the bitter end with undisputed bravery and ferocity! Russians were fearing the worst but at the last moment Yavuz capsized and slowly went to the bottom of the Sea. Admiral Souchon was never found, and his fate remains a mystery!

Few minutes later mine layers from Sevastopol reported that the death of LC Almaz, sunk by Turkish submarine 12 hours ago was avenged. Veteran sub hit the mine and sunk with all hands.

In Northern Iraq elite Cossack squadron, which recently survived attacks by 4 Turkish divisions managed to destroy the road. Fatherland awaits heroes home -- first Elite Russian unit will be given a new name. Stavka thinks that Andranik ;) will be the most appropriate.

Unfortunately 3 Russian Cossacks died near Trabson, trying to engage 2 Turkish divisions in the open plains!

Nish is the only Serbian city still fighting, and vowes to fight to the last Conscript.

Message from the Entente to Russia:

"Congratulations on your recent Naval victory in the Black Sea. All of England is now resting a little easier with this news."

From French foreign minisiter: "Congratulations Andranik! You have risen from the ranks of the obscure to become a great leader. We pray for your safe journey home!"

Week 38-39, 1914 Entente

France

French forces led by Joffre and Petain recapture Nancy for no losses. During the fighting Germany lost 1xHMG and 1xGarrison. No other action in the West by France. Although this victory does not completely restore confidence in the French army, France is relieved that there boys can fight after all. :)

Britain

General Haig launches his attack against Antwerp and takes the city! British losses are 1xRifle A and 1xRifle R. The Germans lose 2xHMG, 3xRifle R, and 1xSpecial Fortress in the fighting in and around Antwerp. Apparently German reinforcements heading to Antwerp were nearby and the Royal Navy shelled them redlining the stack.

The offensive continues with the capture of Rotterdam which was defended by a lone German Rifle R. He was shelled by the Royal Navy and a British Infantry Corps took the city.

In other news British forces from Gibraltar take Marabella from Germany which it had recently acquired during the peace negotiations with the Neutrals. The allies still have no peace with the Neutrals and are still at war.

Italy

Diaz goes into action supported by a small force in the Adriatic threatening Fiume which appears to be undefended. The Italian Navy heavily shells Ragusa which contains the Austrian fleet. No losses to report although many ships in Ragusa were badly damaged during the shelling.
