I'd like to happily report experiencing a hard double-take from looking at the last page of my Omelas thread just now and seeing Eran with my avatar and stuff arguing religion with zxcvbnm! I was like "WTH, when did I post this?"
Heck, I was doing the same thing, in reverse . . . I would type, hit "post reply", and then wonder how Erik beat me to it. 
Although I feel that some of the arguments I made were not completely unlike the sort Erik would have made, so . . .

Is the participants list fully updated? 'Cause if it is, just put everyone without a "taken by" in an Excel file, assign a random number to each, sort the list by number, and pair up.
Takes about five seconds.

That doesn't work. The people in your list haven't been 'taken by' anyone but they may have 'taken' someone. For example, no-one took my avatar, but I already took D'Artagnan59, so while shortguy could take my avatar, I couldn't take his.
