Interesting, but I find it suspect that so many people could have been duped if there was any other image of Justinian to compare it too. Occam's Razor still applies to history.From what I remember - and it's been awhile since I've read the relevant paper - the argument goes something like this: Thiudareiks' patronage was responsible for the construction of the San Vitale church; Thiudareiks frequently and consistently attempted to paint himself (har) as a Roman emperor, propagandistically and artistically; there are no particular reasons why the mosaic cannot have been Thiudareiks; the Roman Empire under Ioustinianos did not control Ravenna long enough for Ioustinianos to have plausibly ordered the creation of the mosaic before his death, and certainly not for long enough before Theodora's death.
