the "bet two bottles of whiskey" thread

Alright, I'll bet two bottles of Black Label Jim Beam bourbon that 2013 is THE YEAR OF THE ROYALS! That's right baby, 2013 World Series champions Kansas City Royals. So who's got a quad and is willing to step up and take the bet? First come, first serve.

EDIT: If you get the quad reference when you post your acceptance of the challenge, the bet is modified that if you win you get 3 bottles and if I win you only have to send me 1 bottle.

EDIT #2: I am in my mid-40s, smoke, and am a bit overweight. If I happen to kick the bucket before the end of the season, this bet is null and void and cannot be enforced against any living relatives or significant others.

I'll take that bet, actually. And you know I get the quad reference, pyjak. :p

So you are taking Kansas and I get everybody BUT Kansas?? I know you said first come first serve but if that's what's on offer I'll put down the 2 bottles to your 1 if you're happy to go again.

Done and done!

And done! Though I should give you a good smacking for confusing Missouri and Kansas, but I'll let that pass. :D

And thus closes the bet. No more to be accepted. Except for DT's offer of a bet on pop instead of whiskey. Still available and willing if he wants....

Yeah, baby! It's 2013. The YEAR OF THE ROYALS is at hand.

If you guys want to just concede defeat now and send me the whiskey, I totally understand. Remember. BLACK LABEL Jim Beam.

I have no reason to think The Royals are less likely than any other side to win the World Series.

But I don`t need to pick any particular side to win, I get everyone BUT the Royals. That`s a fine bet in my book.

You may not have much of a reason to think so, but in reality it's highly unlikely they'll make the run. The theoretically good teams on the South Side and in Detroit plus the stacked AL West and East divisions (Angels, Rangers, A's, and Jays, Orioles, Red Sox, respectively) means that's it's highly unlikely the Royals will even make the playoffs, let alone battle near-certain perpetual non-Homefield advantage to make it to the series, let alone let alone beat whatever NL team faces them. The Royals have a good group of prospects but I'd say they're still a year or two away from seriously contending in the AL Central.

If there's any sleeper that may come out of the AL Central I'd say it'd be the Indians. (Or possibly the Twins based on how they've looked so far, admittedly it's based on an extremely tiny sample size but still)

Sorry VR, maybe next year.

Yeah, I'm not going to concede when the team is 3-3. :p

Yeah, I'm not going to concede when the team is 3-3. :p
And they've now gone to .545 instead of .500! You had your chance, and now you'll have to wallow in the misery of watching them all season march triumphantly to that world series win.

So, the Royals are so bad that they're getting a near-career year from James Shields and are still below .500. And their GM is apparently either posturing or insane.

I'm pretty comfortable with this bet.

Heh, yeah I was just musing about this on #fiftychat the other day. Wondering if it would be easier (or heck what is legal??) to have the bottles shipped, or arrange with a local booze shop in y'alls area for pickup and my payment. Kind of leaning towards the latter, but I don't know if Jim Beam is available in Aussieland.

I confess I've never tried it. Why, in a world with so many malt whiskeys, would I?

Maybe I should. But there's this association with Jack Daniels which I cannot seem to escape. And mixed with Coke? Gah!

The Royals ended up having a solid second half to the season and stayed in the hunt for much longer than anybody expected after that extremely rough first half, but after last night's shellacking in Seattle they are officially out of the race for the AL wild-card spots, out of the playoffs, and no longer in World Series contention.

Without having to read the thread, this means what?

It means that VR owes me three bottles of Jim Beam Black Label and that he owes rugbyLEAGUEfan one.

3 and 1? I thought it was 2 and 2? I'll need to re-read the thread later. I also owe DT a case of whatever is Mormon friendly. Guessing Aquafina...

So VRW, what's the lesson to be learned from all this?

Derp! yeah, you got the quad reference so you get three and RLF actually lowered it to one on my end if he won, so yeah, three for you and one for RLF.

Shockingly, though, Jim Beam Black in Aussieland is no longer 8 year aged and 86 proof. They apparently changed it to some weak arse 6 year 80 proof knockoff :( From the reviews I read online at an aussie booze site, most folks are not happy with the change. It prompted me to check the Jim Beam site for USA #1 and we luckily still have 8/86 black label beam.

Need you guys to PM me so I can know whether to send funds directly to you for purchase at a store of your choice, or if I need to contact a store local to you and arrange for the purchase and have them hold it for you (if that's even legal??) Shipping is apparently out of the question entirely. Seems it is illegal.

Weird, eh?! (the pics below)

Could leave it on the shelf for 2 more years, but that's hard to do. Plus, is it aged in oak barrels? Likely huge stainless tanks.

:D Yeah, that's a good lesson. Of course, you might have won...
