the "bet two bottles of whiskey" thread

Done and done. And yeah, that's what I was meaning by fully functional. You spelled it out nicely. Okay, bet is closed!

@Kaitzilla: It helps the odds when I've been saying that each year for almost a decade. ;)

Lockheed-Martin's (or whatever company buys them in the meantime) Skunkworks will have a fully functional (at least prototype) nuclear fusion reactor within ten years. I am rounding this up slightly to simply be functional by December 31, 2024.

I am only accepting one bet. The first person to accept my bet for the value of two bottles (fifth bottles, not little airline courtesy things) of Jim Beam Black Label in 2024 (I will send funds via Western Union or PayPal, whichever is easier for me.) Accept in this thread only. NO PMs, no phone text in case you're one of the handful here with my mobile number, no snail mail confirmation, etc etc etc. ONLY IN THIS THREAD.

I accept. I don't think that we will get fusion this century. Will you accept my few minutes late bet?

Sorry big dawg, but Boots beat you to it and as my posts said, I was only accepting one bet. :(

As a consolation prize, I present you with one of your country's national treasures, at least as far as I am concerned. Both the song and the singer, btw.

Woo! It's always nice to get a little something out of a failed technological advance.

All the same, good luck bhsup/Lockheed Martin! I do mean that. :scan:

I accept. If I'm right and this is mostly a PR stunt, I get the value of two bottles of bottles of Jim Beam Black Label. If I'm wrong, I will be way too happy about an energy breakthrough to mind the cost.

To count as a fully functional prototype, the device must produce net energy (more out than in), in such a way as to be useful in producing electrical power for some significant military or civilian application (for example, being a major or primary energy source for a ship). Using it for neutron radiation or something like that doesn't count - small scale but very energy-negative fusion reactors can already be used for that. Only electrical energy output counts.

Just to throw in a small caveat here, with suggestion for handling it...

A naval propulsion reactor, which is what I suspect LM is targeting with their research, will not actually produce significant electrical output. Propulsion reactors produce shaft horsepower, or whatever the metric equivalent.

I would drop the 'electrical' from the terms of the bet, and just go with 'energy output'.

Okay, that's fine. Usable net energy output of any type from sustained, controlled fusion reactions works for me.

If you are still interested, I will accept a bet under the same conditions bhsup offered.

In other words: I'll take that bet.

:salute: It was a hell of a run, but in the end you won. Enjoy the booze :)

PM me with how you want it. As per the original bet, I'll do either paypal or western union as I cannot actually ship you the whiskey per federal law. Paypal I think I just need your email. Western Union I'll need IIRC your full name and city/state.

Yes indeed it was a hell of a run. Honestly I wish the Giants had played any other team (other than, perhaps, the Astros or Rays), because this series was stressful especially because if the Giants weren't in it I would have been rooting for the Royals, even with the bet on. I'll PM you a little later tonight when I'm done partying.

I'd totally bet two bottles that golden state wins in 5, but I don't want the trouble of shipping any of you fools alcohol internationally or have to paypal you money. So virtual whisky?

Also I'd bet on newbee winning manila major dota2. No one probably knows what I'm talking about.

I'll try to dig up the post later, but you took the position that Hillary would get the nomination, i took the counter.

EDIT: post is not in this thread...
