The Cinemod

A big than you to Blake00 for his time and doing the heavy lifting to get everything linked back together. FWIW I do currently use it on Steam, so if there are compatibility changes for those with discs, I’ve forgotten what might be needed. Not sure how many are still around, but thanks to all those in the Civ community that contributed in some way or another. I used to love modding on this game and coming to this site.

A wonderful decade of marriage and kids, 3rd due soon, put an end to my time on CIV3, but I’d drop in every few years to look around. Most recently seeing the request from earlier this year to reupload. So it’s here now if anyone ever wants to have a look. I’m sure it’s tough for most to invest 60+ hours into a game these days. If you do play, remember Cinemod was always meant to be a fun way to incorporate all the cool stuff on Civfanatics. It was never meant to be taken too seriously.

Here are a few insights for anyone who might play. Most stuff is the same as Conquests, just reflavored. The governments are the same, but renamed. The Civilopedia has all the basic concepts information, so check it regularly if you need. Upon starting the game, it does direct you to Cinemod concepts.

Using post #128 as a reference, I’d pick a Studio depending on when you like your GA (Glorious Age, 20 turn bonus) to start, and of course by traits. You must build a “SAG – Screen Actors’ Guild or IAA” in every set as a prerequisite building ASAP. This enabled other modding concepts. Lots of other buildings are prereqs for other buildings and units, but you’ll have to learn about them in game.

There are 4 distinct “factions” and each one has a different tech tree allowing different builds and units. You will see things on the field that you cannot build. There are tons of auto-producing buildings. Settlers are Auto-produced every few turns. Auto buildings, other than for settlers, will eventually become obsolete as newer buildings build stronger units.

I found an occasional Civilopedia entry that is wrong/misspelled, but there should be few, not many. The game shouldn’t crash. I’ve played it for years, but you never know because I didn’t play all 31 Studios. I would never claim the game is “balanced,” but also, it’s not easy because the AI can spam a lot of units. It’s often a challenge, especially if you don’t get a great starting location. This, of course, depends on the level you play.

I haven’t really touched it for more than 5 years, so if there have been new improvements in the community, they have not been incorporated into this mod. Feel free to discuss adding them if they would improve the game significantly.

MISC:

Every era has a Strong defender. Find it and upgrade. Era 2 is Cujo.

There are a few invisible units. Watch out!

Looking in the Civilopedia, you can see duplicate buildings, two marketplaces for example. Disregard this as it was necessary for the multiple faction lines. You will only be able to build the one appropriate for your studio.

You can terraform hills and mountains.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but if necessary, it’ll come up.

Have fun!

So far it's only been Cinemod where I had the issue, I tested a bunch of other random downloads that are hosted on CivFanatics and had no issues.
Those random ones were likely attachment downloads which are different. CivFanatics attachments are stored on the forum server, whereas large files (too big for the forums) are uploaded via FTP go to another CivFanatics server (that was recently changed) and that appears to be where this problem is. Every file on that server I've tested in Firefox has suffered the issue sadly. I've let the admins know and they're gonna look into it.
