The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I tried Morrowind on my new computer (which I specifically bought to be able to play ... recent games ;)), and Morrowind is STILL not running smoothly while running around in Balmora.

That seems a bit strange, I noticed a significant difference when I got my new computer a few months ago compared to how it ran on the old one.

I'm very excited for this game - I didn't pre-order it because usually I'm not one of those people who needs to have it on the first day, but I might regret that! Although I have some things I really need to get done this week, so maybe I can use that as motivation and treat myself to a reward on the weekend. :D

I thought it was something you manualy entered your specs into, not something that SCREWED UP YOUR COMPUTER.

Until I restarted. I am on dial up so it slowed my comp down, I could only post messages on CIvFanatics for some reason and it made my typing backwards.

Sorry if the link caused you some problems. When I ran it I had a significant slowdown for a minute or so while it was running (and I have high-speed), so maybe it was just too much for dialup considering you were also doing other things at the same time. Other than slowing the system for a minute, I didn't have any trouble.

It put me just the slightest notch under the recommended specs - about what I expected. I wonder if I should have splurged for a better vid card when I got my system - I wanted to, but it was already costing me more than I wanted to spend.

I'm not sure how much stock you take in first impressions of a game, but on Gamespot, the average user rating is 9.7 out of 10. Now, how many of those who've voted actually have the game...no clue.

I've seen sites where there were ratings for Oblivion 2 weeks ago - when there's no chance any of those people had played the game. So I wouldn't put too much in it.

Lame. Turns out I miss heard the sales person at EBGames so I'll be getting my copy tomorrow. :P

All the better! I have the ability to stay up late tomorrow night. :D

Don't forget to post your impressions, leonel! :)

PS: Hope they haven't taken out the Thunderfall amulet, otherwise I would have to find a new sig. :D

Thanks for the link to the test thingy, I was a bit worried it wouldn't run, but it put me just a notch under reccommended, so itll at least run.

Thanks a lot, now I really cant wait for tomorrow.

Also, thanks so much for this thread... all the 'official' ES sites have jerks arguing about who has or hasn't the game. Much to my surprise civfanatics has the best ES thread on the net.

At first, I wondered why an announcement about The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was on the front page of CivFanatics, but then I went to the Amazon link and saw it was published by Take Two. D'oh! (that bethesda mixed me up)

Tomorrow hopefully I will go to Frye's Electronics and buy it for only $37.99 (not including sales tax  ). What a bargain! I hope that it doesn't run TOO badly on my computer :king:

The fact that Thunderfall, our admin and site owner, is a Morrowind fanatic helps quite a bit. ;)

I was wondering how TF got his name as an item in Morrowind. Don't worry, if there isn't, as soon as the Oblivion TES genarator is out, i'll make a mod for it. :D :)

It's just coincidence... :D That's why the item's effect is somewhat useless... Still, I was pleasantly surprised when I found that item. :)

Well, something happened this morning - I gave in!

I just couldn't wait, I've been waiting for this for so long - I originally wanted to wait a few days, but that won't happen now. I called up a couple local EB games stores and the second had the game, so I took a quick trip over there.

Now I have Oblivion right beside me. So I guess it might be a while until I'm back here! :D

[Not to mention a while before I eat, sleep, ....]

Three thirty is when they will be in, EB Games, One calls for me, pleads for me to take it.

All in good time my precious, alll good time.

Lucky Bastard!
I'll get it as soon as it's available at the local store, which should be at the end of the week.

However i'm really concerned on how it will run on my system. I've been told that it will run Oblivion on med-low settings but i'm not sure how good it will look on those. I came across a few low quality pics and i didn't like what i saw. I hope it doesn't look worse than Morrowind.

Luckily, i'm planning to build a new machine in summer, when many new gen hardware will be launched.

I thought I'd pop in one more time and give you all a heads-up on a couple things.

First of all, there's a very common installation bug - but it's easy to fix. Basically, make sure your directx is up-to-date - you'll probably get an error about a missing DLL file if it's not. You have no idea how much I was freaking out until I figured out what it was from the Oblivion forum.

Second - the game is awesome! :goodjob: :D I just completed the tutorial level, and just got out into the open and the world of Oblivion. It's been worth the wait! Creating the character's face is a whole program of it's own. I could have spent a couple of hours perfecting it, but I wanted to play.

Third,

I think it looks pretty good - I have a GeForce 6600GT video card, and am just a tick below recommended specs. I'm able to run on medium and get pretty good gameplay. The thing is, if you're looking for the spectacular forest shots like you saw in some of the preview screenshots, then you might be a little disappointed. To get the grass in that kind of detail you need the high-end stuff. That's the biggest thing I noticed - most of the trees, plants, creatures, etc. look great on medium, but the bare ground and grass is where the difference is. And I haven't enabled some of the other features such as some of the shadow ones (which seem to be giving some people a lot of problems).

I hope everyone is able to join in the adventure very soon!

You were playing it? How much fps do you get on thoose settings? And what resolution are you on? I've got a pretty good computer and would hope I'll be able to run it at max decently.

Ah, the new 128mb 9800 pro that I acquired recently isn't looking like such a beast anymore. In fact, its beginning to whimper in fear.

I finally got my copy! :D However I'm reading some very conflicting threads on the Bethsoft forums. Some reporting excellent performance and some reporting terrible performance. I only hope that my computer is up to the task. :gulp:

I kind of expected the game wouldn't be running that great even with the 3 month of optimization. Guess waiting a bit will let me have some tweak guides available to make my first impressions with it more stable and better. First few hours with a game are always the best.

I'm running the 6600gt(128) video card at 1024x768, with 1 GB RAM, Athlon 3200+ processor, and get:

60 FPS for dark areas in the opening sewers/dungeons
30 FPS for brighter areas with no combat
20 FPS for brighter areas with combat (range 17-25, had one large fight averaging 19-20)
20-30 FPS outdoors, combat didn't seem to lower the FPS as much out here.

The auto-detect set everything to medium. The only things I've changed so far the resolution, and I enabled all the water features. I may try and see if I can push it a little farther. I think I can for most of the game - it's just when there's multiple enemies in combat I think I might have trouble.

The main graphical issue is still the fairly poor texture on distant hills. You can control the distance where it switches from 'real' grass to the texture, so I'm going to try extending the distance and see if my computer can handle it.

The poor textures in distance was guessed days ago from those videos. It's annoying, but hopefully we'll eventually be able to fool around and fix it with better cards later on. And your post just made me a bit happy. My new computer will have a A64 3700, 1gb of RAM(might up it to 2 later) and a Radeon X850, so I'll expect at least high with about 30fps, hopefully I'll get that.

BTW, you get a horse yet?
