What Is This Game?

This NES is inspired (albeit loosely) by both Dwarf Fortress, a game I have never played, and the Realpolitiks sometimes found in Civ 4 Stories & Tales, as well as with a tad of CityIOT, a game run by CivOasis, and Tropico. It follows a group of settlers establishing a settlement in cold, hard land, with the sole goal of sucking the mountains dry of the priceless Unobtanium You are colonists, so your mother country may occasionally impose demands which you can choose to follow, but other than these occasional 'missions', it is a sandbox. The tech level is 1800s.

NB: While this is a sequel to the Fortress, it is far harder and less forgiving. Stupidity and obstinate will lead to death, and the titular hidden fun stuff is certainly not fun for you. Terrance is comodding, and you will soon find out, as I did, that he is sadistic. Be prepared, and be scared.

Mechanics

These are the actual mechanics defining gameplay. Do keep in mind, role play goes a long way towards helping your actions succeed.

Population

Population is the most important mechanic in the game. It decides how much your able to accomplish, the quality of your craftsmanship and the speed of your work. You begin the game with 50 settlers. One settler represents an able bodied person, male or female. Both genders function the same, so I won't distinguish between the two.

However, the main thing which distinguishes humans is their occupation, of which there are 5. These are: miner, builder, crafter, farmer and warrior. Miners excavate and, well, mine. Builders construct and build. Crafters work with the materials given to them by miners, refining them. Farmers grow food, hunt and fish. Warriors battle enemies. You are the ones who assign these; they are not randomly assigned. While each occupation can do any job, they are far more effective when assigned to their designated one.

Population is increased only by immigrants. Birth is not modeled, for ease.

Orders

Each turn, you (the players) decide upon how you will assign your population. You can do this in literally any way, from expanding your mines to building a bridge. By and large, big projects take a long time no matter how many people you assign, and past a point more people doesn't help.

These orders are decided upon by all of you. Whether you vote on it, elect a leader, choose a council, or decide in any other way, I do not care. You all should choose a way, and inform me of it.

Personal orders are also allowed, whether they be to assassinate someone or steal their things. These can be in PM or public, your choice.

Turns last one season.

The Fortress

The actual physical description of your surroundings is in the second post, but as an overview, it is near a mountain, with a river and a forest nearby. You were sent to this spot by your leaders, of the city Stormhold. They seek to expand their empire to include the northern Unobtanium mines, and as such will support you if you need help. You can ask them for goods if you need them overmuch, but they mightn't always oblige you. To them, you are just a business venture and, overall, a gamble which may be cut off if it proves to be too costly.

You arrived here with supplies to last a year, tools to begin some mines and a few farms, but not much else. It is up to you to forge your destiny.

The Stats

You have only 2 stats:

Supplies: Each unit represents enough good to sustain the entire population for one year. Every four turns, I will subtract the current population from the supplies. If the number is negative, the many people die. Random events can either raise that number or lower it. The amount you got this turn, fifty, is higher than you normally will. This windfall of food was both to represent how much of the land was untapped when you go there, so food was easy to come by, and to get you on your feet.
Population: How many people you have.
-Miners:
-Builders:
-Crafters:
-Farmers:
-Warriors:

All else, like your tools, metal, and diamonds can be dealt with abstractly.

Updates:

Updates are when I see fit, usually containing a rundown of what has been accomplished, any random events, any change in stats and any other noteworthy things.

They will almost always cover 1/4 of a year, and will include whether you winter is coming.

Jon Rease seemed oblivious. The colonists decided to try again. "Were you the one who drew this map?"

When he saw the map, he seemed to freeze up. His face turned grey and his eyes blew up into enormous size. As if against his will, he nodded.

"Can you answer some questions?"

He nodded again. A drop of blood flowed out of his nose and fell on the floor.

OOC: I will answer map questions in character. Your very first decision is to pick where you want to settle your main colony.

EDIT: More specifically, I will draw a regional map from which your final site will be chosen.

On Ithwater Lake
On Frothtmitht Vale
On Mountain Wathe
On North of Pine Lake

OOC: Anyone can trade when the chance comes by posting and interacting. Long range expeditions won't be common (or survivable, mwahahaha), but I would say Farmer is up there. They can hunt and defend themselves. Warriors would have a fighting advantage while Miners can get to shelter easily. The other two can't really feed or defend themselves.

I'm playing Ragnar Asnare, son of Igmund Asnare, he who, after a few false starts, became Mayor of the Colony of Nessia and brought it to its most magnificent state before someone else took on the charge and ruined it in just a year.

And I'm going to be a crafter.

I'll play Janga Dortmun, a secretive human builder. He signed up for the expedition due to the fact that he was starving on the overcrowded streets of Stormhold, and this expedition could bring him a better life.

Orders:
Begin construction of a row of houses for everyone to live in and a meager wall to defend the village.

Also, who is up for this?
Fortress: Icewater
Location: Icewater Lake
Farmers: 8
Miners: 10 -> Someone leading
Builders: 10 -> Janga leading
Crafters: 10
Warriors: 12 -> Someone leading

"Ithwateh Lake?"

Jon Rease shudders, as if in a terrible memory.

"The Ithwatah ith thurrounded by ridgeths. It will be hard to ethcape from them when they come."

He seems to shrunk, muttering under his breath "Unobtainium Unobtainium Unobtainium we mutht find it..." He rubs his hands together and shivered, wimpering pitifully. Then, as if in a dase, he continues, his voice still quivering as if from fear...

"Theh ith good treeth, yeth theh ith. And good and thoil, good rich and dead and bleeding thoil. And them."

He closes his eyes.

"We lotht two by the Ithwateh, and anotheh on Tridia."

Jon Rease spat. "Yeth."

"The Frothtmitht ith ath thteep ath it ith inhothpitable. All Morning it ith covered in mitht dethending from Mount de Thpair which thtick your clothth to your boneth. In the Thummeh!"

Rease stopped shivering, now his eyes staring straight forward into your eyes. You notice they are repeatedly dilating and shrinking.

"Frothmitht ruth flowth down a thteep cut between Break Back Ridge and a partneh. Thelteh will be hard to get, food even harden."

He leans close to you.

"But no. You seekth Unobtainium? Theh you thall find the motht in theth curthed Mountainth!. We found that thit laying on on the thlopes themthelveth! And with them, five found DEATH!"

He sits back into his chair, exhausted by fear, looking at nothing.

"It liveth in the Lair. The Lair."

OOC: The only relatively "safe" places on this map is under the Sentinel and among the Greenbacks. Note two things. One, by relatively I mean that seriously, and two, there are no Unobtainium nearby.

Nowhere is really safe. Just different dangers. The closer one gets to Unobtanium deposits, the more dangerous, but we won't be gauging the exact scariness of each region.

I would prefer to settle somewhere along the Mountain Wash for easier transport. How safe is the Mountain Wash?
We were tasked with obtaining unobtanium ore to sell to the merchants of Stormhold. So, in order to get it, we need to be in the bad places. :D My area is the best I think, since it is very dangerous, has fertile land, many trees, and a lake inside of a unobtanium vein.

"The Mountain Wathe is a great, deep lake draining the entire region. The land ithnt great, but the forethtth are thome of the thicketht then ith."

Jon Rease rubbed himself, and wiped his bloody nose.

"Theh are thtrange monthtahth in the Lake. Onthe we thaw a great thcaled beatht chathe down a native guide. Then caveth all oveh, many we have not charted."

He begun shaking his head.

"The Thentinal thall keep you safe. From monthtahs, from frothtth, from unobtainium. Thettle theh if you mutht, and think not of going furtheh!"

OOC: Trading for it and sending smaller expeditions (not separate colonies, persay) are possible but have their own dangers.
