The Gang of Four - FRFR Redux

Can't build mine's/irrigation, hmm, sounds interesting. Should be interesting, I hope.

Or roads. The only thing we can do is chop down and plant trees.

Even more interesting, going to be a huge pain in the industrial age's though.

Sirian and Charis had a tough time with their's and while it hasn't been finished yet, they could probably win it. For us, I think it is a huge challenge. Maybe bigger than the DI1 3CC AW game.

Plus we threw in the no exploits rule. This is definitely tough.

I would be very interested in getting your's and Bede's opinions on how we're doing, and where should we go. Often a fresh set of eyeballs and a fresh set of brain cells can shead light on something we might have overlooked.

Now we just need our local tarheel to give us a "got it" - That would be you Gengis! :D

Comparable, crappy, but as your not building roads or anything, decent. ;)

Can't wait to get my hands on the save though and play a round.

Got it.

I am honored by your invitation to join this game.

Have been following your progress with great interest.

Thanks again GoF.

Welcome aboard! Expect a present of the save passed to you in about 20.

Wow, talk about being forced into a corner! Personally I think we’ve been prioritizing harbors in every city too much for our own good & not enough settlers, but that’s just me.

Flight Check: At war with Babs. Parity with Port & Persians, everyone else is down a few techs.

We have 8 warrriors, a archer, 3 galleys, and a Curragh.

I would love for Copenhagen to get the whale in it’s radius, but waiting 59 turns for that isn’t gonna happen. Switch it to a warrior.

Load up 2 warriors into galley next to Trondheim, and another into the galley next to Bergan. This makes it so Bergan will want to riot in 5 turns, but I’ll do something about that then. Galleys move out for goody hut popping.

IT- Trondheim: arch>warrior(we need some cheap disposable MPs).
Oslo: harbor>walls (will likely be the focal point in our upcoming war with China)
Persians complete Great Lighthouse & start Temple of Artemis.

1- First hut popped: angry warriors ambush our warrior, good thing it was on a mtn.

2- Barbs decide not to attack, our warrior jumps back in his boat & gets the hell outa there!
Gandhi has construction, but wants an arm & leg for it.

IT- Trondheim: war>archer

3- Egypt is offering wines & 46g for Code, but with the possibility of barbs sailing through either of the 2 key tiles & breaking our rep, it’s not worth it.

IT- Barb horseman shows up. I was just about to take care of that camp.

4- 2nd goody hut: angry barbs. :wallbash:
Still waiting on someone to get Construction and break Gandhi’s monopoly.

IT- Our warrior pimp smacks the only barb to attack him, and promotes.
Bergen: set>set

5- Why break such a nice trend? Our their hut pops barb warriors as well.
MM Reykajaziqml to get settler in 2.

6- Our warrior goes blow for blow with a barb, and then retreats bleading to his ship. Good thing the other 2 didn’t attack.
Veteren warrior fails to kill a barb horseman on a plain. I’m glad he died, we don’t need such cowards in our army.
An El finishes him off.

IT- The William demands Math. The Dutch?? Those pansy, clog wearing sissies don’t want any of our Viking superiority. I tell them to stuff it. William declares war. (no offense ment to any members who might happen to be Dutch)
Trongheim: arch>spear
Reykjavic(I hate Viking names): set>cat
Birka: harbor>war

7- Decide to build an embassy with Persia(strongest in game), India, Portugal, and Egypt(all on same continent, can make them fight amongst themselves.)

Persepolis-- 6 pop(1 entertainer), 11spt, -food, Temple of Art in 40, has only the GLight built, and is defended by 2 spears. They have ivory, horses, and iron. Also are putting 80% into research/ 20% treas.

Lisbon(Port)-- 6 pop(1 ent), 5 spt, 12 food, building Temple of Art. Currently in ANARCY, which he just got either Rep or Monarchy. Contains only the oracle, and is defended by 2 spears & a warrior(with a settler there).

Delhi-- 3 pop, 7 spt, 8food, building colloseum in 18. They have horses, but no luxs which is giving them all kinds of happiness problems, hence the temple & Mausoleum in the city. Howerver the AI is going over kill adding a colloseum to this but whatever. Going 50/50 on research(or maybe 60/40?), and defended by 3 spears(and a settler which will take 1 of them.)

Thebes- 4 pop(1ent), 5spt, 8 food, building Temple of Art. Also is in Anarchy. No buildings, only has wines & is defended by 2 spears.

All of this valuable info for only 100g. What a bargain!

Further investigating reveals that Egypt has & is revolting to Monarchy, while Port is revolting to a Republic. All are at monopoly price. I’ll let this slide for a couple turns hoping someone picks up another tech.

More good news!! The friendly Huns give us a map of the area we’ve already fully explored.:D Well, it coulda been worse…………………. Our next popped hut is Goth Barbs.

8- Found Starvanger which starts on walls.

Well we’re running out barbarian warriors to get ambushed by, so I send 1 galley home for colonization in the future, one heads of small islands to check out the interior, and 1 goes off to harass the Babs.

9-

10- Henry will give us Rep for 250g, we’ll have it in 3 turns anyways for much less, I’d wait.

*Some great trading opportunities are about to come up.

*I have a galley on the way home and a settler about to be produced, you can race the babs to the iron 2 islands over if you want(the only iron visible on the coast anywhere). We really need to pull out some troops and beat back China, they have horses, 2 diamonds, and iron all on the coast.

*I’d also recommend taking out the barb camp(I have 2 archers en route), and settling on our other furs, this will give us a resource to trade away in the future that we desperately need.

*I think I accidentally played an extra turn, I’ll only play 9 next time.

Good luck!
save

Thank you for the present Gengis.

Expect news tonight.

Review:
* Workers may not build tile improvements: no mines, no irrigation, no roads. (No railroads).
* Clearing jungle, forest, pollution is OK. Planting forests is OK.
* Building forts, outposts, radar towers, airfields is OK.
* Our cities may never make use of improved tiles. If we come into control of improved lands, we must pillage the tiles before we may use them.
* We are not allowed to sign Right of Passage agreements.
* No colonies.
* No exploits – LK rules

Pondering these restrictions Bede evolves the following principles:
1) Settle on coasts
2) Settle on resources/trade goods
3) Islands with trade goods or resources are good places
4) Build harbors soonest
5) Captured cities not on coasts/not on top of lux/resources must be razed and replaced with a ville meeting requirements 1 & 2

Looking around the map discover that Stockholm lacks a harbor. A touch of :whip: will get it in 1 at a waste of ten shields but the ville won't grow without it anyway and do I want to wait 9 turns for the iron?

Rename Horse Hus to Danish Royal Stud. DRS also needs a harbor and the whip will get it in one, or I could wait for the revolt to Republic, but do we want to be a Republic?

Investigation of the map scrolls shows that China has some very tempting spots with iron and gems available. As one of our strengths in this variant will be trading opportunities Bede develops a plan:

Build a military force to remove the Chinese from the island. That means horsemen and swords supported by catapaults. Without mines we have no 10spt cities, best we can do is 5spt in two towns but not if Bergen builds its settler in two

Consulting the history scroll Bede discovers that Gengis has written:
"*I have a galley on the way home and a settler about to be produced, you can race the babs to the iron 2 islands over if you want(the only iron visible on the coast anywhere). We really need to pull out some troops and beat back China, they have horses, 2 diamonds, and iron all on the coast. I’d also recommend taking out the barb camp(I have 2 archers en route), and settling on our other furs, this will give us a resource to trade away in the future that we desperately need."

Since the iron on the island is far away and superfluous, and someone (Babylon) has a town on the island already, and, if we can build miltary fast enough to take China off the roster, and the furs are closer and worth money in the bank now, Bede decides to whip the harbors on the resource islands for the horse and iron and move the settler to the furs spot.

He shifts the build orders at Trondheim from spear due in 1 to a Courthouse to conserve shields for a swordsman when the iron connects and plan to build nothing but horsemen there and swords in Bergen once the settler is trained and the city grows back to 5spt. Belatedly discovers that settler is already en route to furs, so switches Bergen to barracks

The citizens at Oslo are reassigned as fishermen and a tax collector to boost income. It stalls growth for one turn which will be regained when I can reduce the science tax.

T1 230BC
Galleys continue exploring
Bergen and Oslo start barracks
Curragh fortified outside Trondheim upgraded to galley.
Portugal and Persia know Republic.

IT
Research on Republic finishes, start on Currency due in 10 at -8. Hope to pick up the difference peddling stuff.
China has a war/set pair crossing our borders at Trondheim

T2 210BC
Explore the Antipodes and sail galley out of Trondheim to estasblish route to DRS

IT
Dutch start ToA
Shift citzens around at Trondheim to get 6spt for sword in 5

T3 190BC
Found Odense to claim furs
Trading round starts
Babylon will pay us 69g for Peace and Polytheism. Done.
Cleopatra learned Republic in the interim and wants 190g for Wines and won't accept gpt even if I threaten war. The added contentment is only worth about 4gpt so pass on paying 190g.
Hammi wants Philosophy for his Dyes and won't pay any monies for it. Pass.
Gandhi wants 500g, Polytheism and CoL for Construction. Pass
Henry and Mao won't offer any meaningful amount for anything we have to offer.

IT
Babylon starts the ToA
Portugese start the HG
Chinese set/war team heading north

T4 170BC
Bede is baffled. We have a sea route to Stockholm in the way far south, yet DSR, just across the strait, lacks it, despite galleys plying the waters between DSR and Trondheim every turn.

IT
I wasn't paying attention and Bergen grows and has a fit
India starts the GW

T5 150BC
Hammi will sell Dyes for 150g. Buy 'em and hope Bergen settles down. It works and lux tax gets shifted to the science budget.

IT
Egypt starts HG
Birka builds barracks and starts Archer

T6 130

IT

110BC
Willie Wonka now wants to talk. As he will not offer any reparations for harassing the peace loving Vikings. I tell him "never mind" and move on.
Hammi will buy Philosophy for 184g, meaning we get our 150 back plus a 34g rebate. It's on offer elsewhere so I take his money.

T7 90BC
Not much goin' on. Galleys explore

IT

T8 70BC
Even less. Archers blockade Chinese settler team in north
Out of sheer nosiness spend 54g on an embassy with the Babylonians.
Babylon is pop4, 7spt building the ToA due in 68, 10fpt growth in 4, 11gpt 40% science, has a granary and temple, dyes but no iron or horses.

IT
Dutch galley shows up on east coast. Swords from Trondheim are loaded into galley for sail around the northern peninsula
T9 50BC
Archers follow homeward bound Chinese
I still don' t understand why Stockholm has a sea route to Trondheim and is shipping iron and DRS with a harbor and just across the across the strait from Trondheim can't ship its horses.

I'll stop here to give us even numbers to work with. This game has a long way to go so I won't worry about 1 missed turn in the BC's

GoFer

DRS has a sea tile between it and the home island. So there isn't a trade route. Grabbing the horses was mostly for resource denial, and for our use down the road, like for cavs. I think with Berserkers we might not even go for knights.

Good use of the whip. I always forget about the whip.

I should beable to play it tonight. Prolly going to start in 10 minutes.

Pre-Turn:
Looked around the map some to get my bearings on exactly where this game is going.
Checked trades:
Bought Monarchy from the Chinese for Mathematics, Writing, and 280g.
Signed a ROP with the egyptians. Status goes from Cautious to Polite.
Traded Monarchy to the Persians for 30g and 1gpt (figured they'd have it soon anyway)

Turn 1:
The dutch dropped two warriors off by Bergen, I immediantly moved the near-by archer into the city.

Turn 2:
We lost bergen to the dutch, they shouldn't hold the city for very long though.

Turn 3:
Switched the Warrior in Danish Royal Stud with a swordsmen, and send it back to upgrade. (by galley BTW)

Turn 4:
Stavanger completes Barracks, starts on archer
Trondheim completes swordsman, starts on swordsman.
Currency is completed, starts on literature.

Turn 5:
Archer destroys a mysterious spearman in Bergen, the city should be are's again next turn.
Checked Trades:
Trade Monarchy to the Indians for Construction.
Sign an ROP with the Indians.
We enter the Middle Ages.
Switch Literature to Feudalsim (kind of a waste though)
Reykjavik starts on palace (Taking 143 turns, so it can be a pre-build for a good many number of wonders)

Turn 6:
We regain control of Bergen, destroy a Dutch galley.
Sign a Peace Treaty with the Dutch, we gain 5g from the deal.

Turn 7:
Nothing interesting

Turn 8:
Nothing interesting either

Turn 9:
Start moving some of our galley's in a homeward direction.

Turn 10:
The chinese move a warrior/settler group into our terrority again. Next player will have to block it again.
Checked trades for the last time:
Trade Construction to the Babylonians for 210g.
Sign a ROP with the Persians, there now Polite towards us.

I'm figuring that the ROP's with the civs on other islands is likely to do us more good than harm, and hopefully we won't get attacked by anyone.

Save

I got it. I still have three other SGs to play. I'll have this posted by Sunday evening.

Pre-flight – 150 AD – Stavanger isn’t ever going to be a happy city or a productive city, but I suppose it does fill in the land.

We weren’t supposed to sign any ROP with anyone, but As long as we don’t use it, I suppose we’ll meet the spirit of the variant.

Need to go back and find out why we’re only building one settler. Ah, we are building up to strike at the Chinese. Very well, the build up shall continue. Nice block on the settler Strider :)

Diplo check finds most of the world poor and stupid.

I like the way Mao has built all these nice cities on the coast for us.

We were worried about commerce due to the lack of rivers. By working coast and sea tiles we can get some serious commerce. Of course we don’t get as many shields that way.

We have Republic, but we haven’t revolted yet. “You say you wanna revolution” Four turns of anarchy.

Hire some scientists to keep everyone happy and working.

1. 170 AD – I hate go-to’s.
2. 190 AD – Drop off a warrior on one side of an island and I’ll pick him up on the other side.
3. 210 AD – Dropped off warrior attacks a barb warrior and loses. “AND YOU CALL YOURSELF A VIKING!!”
IBT – The Glorious Scandinavian Republic is born.
The Indians are building the Hanging Gardens.

4. 230 AD – Adjust sliders. Science 50% and feudalism in 13 turns. Lux at 10%. Budget is -3gpt. The Colossus kicks in and we start making some $$$ now that the despotism cap is off.

5. 250 AD - Literature is out there… Egypt & India. Since we don’t need it yet we can hold off. These turns go fast without workers. :D
Need to bump lux up to 20% to keep the cities happy.

IBT – Oslo: Barracks=> Archer
Stavanger: Archer=> Archer
Indians are building the GL.
Dutch are building the HG.

6. 260 AD – I sell Currency to Hammi for Dyes and 92G.
He draws Monotheism. I buy it from him for Republic and Monarchy.
Drop lux to 10%.

IBT – Birka: Sword=> Archer

7. 270 AD -

IBT – Trondheim: Sword=> Archer

8. 280 AD -

IBT – Egypt is building the GL.

9. 290 AD -
10. 300 AD - *yawn* wake up

After action report: I have set up a wall to keep the Chinese settlers out. We will also have the start of a decent invasion force. Five swords, two cats, and three archers are forming the wall. With another five archers or so we can launch against China, who doesn’t even have HBR yet. Or we could wait until we get Invention in 30-40 turns and attack with Berserkers. I say we go in ten and take what we can.

I think we should take China’s seven northern cities. Shanghai needs to be razed and two cities built in its place. One will go one tile North on the canal tile. One goes one two south on the gems.
