The History of NESing

This thread is turning into a stupid contest. If you don't support this idea, state your objections and leave.

So, what do people think about format? Do we just want to write one chapter per year, or divide things by generation, or split the period up into arbitrary eras, or what?

Speaking of which, the whole generation thing needs to be modernized anyway.

[useful mode] I think it has to be done by year.. the generation divisions is shaky at best[/end]

To put things in perspective, I would like to peruse a history of NESing, I’ve been here since (???) and knowing what there is, was, was planned, etc would be of great use, pulling together all the information might facilitate a better flow of said information and remove market (economist in me) NESing inefficiencies. I could think of nothing worse than working on a map, slaving away books in hand, eyes going a funny shade from to much screen time only to find out something similar has been done and could have been retrofitted (Europe between 1550-1600 is an evil edifice full of hate for the budding cartographer amongst us, me).

I second this. If I had more time, I would participate.

... There's not really much else to say. Please don't consider this spam.

Completely agree. I've never liked dividing people into generations, especially when there comes to be dozens of generations.

Year or half years is best. I've noticed a trend that spring/summer usually brings about new types of NESs and longer-lasting ones (of course with many exceptions), whether its because NESers have more time or something else could be the reason. But I would support a half-year or year divisions, more so then the "shaky" divisions.

Okay, I'm setting the date now: Saturday, August 23 from the early afternoon onward will be the first planning/brainstorming session on #NES. Even people that are low on time but interested in giving feedback should try and make it.

Save the date, people.

I would like to offer aid for this. Over the years I have started several attempts at just such an effort. I've even gone so far to backup a multitude of NESes on my jump drive, including all of my NESes, and one or two of Jason the King's and Warman17's. I have been a bit biased over the years when I've started the attempts, but I was there for the controversies which occasionally occurred.

What should be acknowledged is the rivalries and the resulting flame wars and anger which resulted over controversy. Board Game vs. Story, the gradual change of NESing back to more of a game than free form, the establishment of the great NESes and their decline. Also, there are events which don't exactly paint myself and others in a very flattering light. All should be reported. For the newer NESers, it should be clear that even us ancients ( :P ) had our faults.

Long story short, I am more than willing to help with any of this.

As for year or generation, the generation system needs to be refined, but it is by far the best way to determine the course of things. Too many things overlap in each year that has occurred.

EDIT: Jason's suggestion of half-year divisions might work too.

Wow. That was...exactly what I'm looking for?

Thanks a lot for the offer, eq. I'll be relying on you and Jason (and das if he shows interest) a lot for information on the early days, and NK for the middling days between NES2 I and ITNES. Everything after that I was here for.

And I'm tempted to style them 'updates' instead of 'chapters', with an 'Update Zero' describing the pre-forum origins of NESing.

At least for the second half of history, I think things have worked more in years than in "generations", though. Basically there's a slight boom and trying of new ideas at the start of summer, then another one at the end of summer, then we have a fairly constant forum through the other three seasons.

Yeah, speaking of ideas, we should also talk about the ones which have frequently and consistently failed, no matter who was in charge. Top among these is commander NESes.

I should note that my computer can't access #NES- I've tried. I can only speak to others over MSN.

(and das if he shows interest)

Frankly EQ and Jason can almost definitely tell about it all better than I. I suppose I might be able to fill something in on the earliest days, but after that I missed out on a lot during my withdrawal, whereas EQ and Jason were, to my understanding, more or less always there until after I came back.

Das, you should be the expert on the early days. I've done some work in the past couple of hours. To be displayed momentarily. Also, you were around for times when I wasn't, and I believe Jason wasn't either. This includes some of the more recent years as well.

Below is the start of a reference work for the wiki and perhaps a history of NESing. I hope it helps and that someone with more wiki skill than I can incorporate it. I've always ffelt that the wiki should be more comprehensive with the players and what NESes they were in. When this project is complete, all it should take is copy and paste for the people on the wiki.

The above is just a sample of the project I'm working on. What I want to do, both for the idea of Thlayli and the NES wiki, is create a comprehensive listing of all NESes. This will include all players and their nations in every NES, links to all NESes, summaries of all histories and rulesets, total postcounts including related threads, and so on.

Needless to say that's a bit of an epic project. I'll be creating a thread to manage it, and I hope we can work together upon it. I'll set up a format to follow as well as doing all of my own NESes. If others contribute they'll post it all on the thread a bit at a time and I'll edit and organize it all. Once completed, it will be created as a thread with a series of posts. After that point, it will likely just be a simple matter not only to determine NESing's history, but to copy and paste to the wiki as well.

Even though I have only been in the NESing community for 1/100th of its lifespan, I would be willing to help EQ in his massive NES listing project.
I wouldn't mine doing research for some NESes.

It would seem that spell checkers had no been invented in the day's or yore :p

Honestly the speed with which they developed is still breathtaking, less than 2 months and they went ahead leaps and bounds, except for the aforementioned spelling :p

Though spellcheckers still have a ways to go, it seems.

No we need syntax checkers :p
