The Immortal Challenge 4: Flight of the Phoenix

Round 10: 1568AD - 1697AD

The update is finally here (not that it's late :p). Well, to be fair, I am updating at a rate of about once every 2.5 weeks, which doesn't sound too horrible ;)

We began the round preparing for a quick strike against Shaka. We split our stack into two as planned and reinforced those stacks with more cannons. Meanwhile, we continued researching Democracy.

A few turns into the round we got another GS at Edirne:

The Great Library continues to be useful. However, this one would lightbulb Scientific Method, which would render the wonder obsolete. We would have to do it eventually, but not so soon. Lightbulbing will stop being very effective anyway. He goes to sleep for now.

Soon, our war plans were executed:

immortal172.jpg

Notice our small stack. We didn't need more per stack due to Shaka's technological disadvantage. Needless to say, his cities fell quickly. The first:

immortal173.jpg

Sorry about the bad screenshot. I have no idea how it became like that and didn't notice till too late. Well, it gets the point across anyway...

At this time, we discovered Democracy, which proved to be a bigger boon than just enabling Emancipation:

immortal174.jpg

And,

immortal175.jpg

At this rate, we are proceeding with our catch-up game quite well. We researched Steam Power and Railroads next for machine guns and, err, railroads. The incredible boost in mobility would be very useful for defense and logistics, on top of the solid defenders that MGs are.

Meanwhile, the second Zulu city fell:

immortal176.jpg

And we got another GG for our efforts:

immortal177.jpg

He was posted to our HE city (Ankara) to be another GMI. I considered setting up a Military Academy, but decided that having experienced troops would be more useful and cost-effective than having more troops.

The last Zulu city in the south fell and was razed:

immortal178.jpg

If you remember, I decided to raze it in the last update because it would be too exposed to Mongol attack and thus difficult to defend in the next war.

And, aptly enough, the next war was just round the corner:

immortal179.jpg

That was sooner than I expected, but better he declare than us. That meant we had to keep our units in the south and couldn't go after Shaka's northern cities. It also meant massive WW carried over from the last war. Faced with a lot of unhappiness, I felt that we had to make the transition to Emancipation:

immortal180.jpg

We also switched to Free Speech to take advantage of a 1 turn discount for changing 2 civics at the same time. This may seem ironic given that we're at war, but our unhappy cities could generally not take much drafting. And we had quite enough troops to fight off Khan anyway. Additional units could be slow-built.

Thankfully Shaka was willing to capitulate by then to save us some burden:

[continued in the next post]

[continued from previous post]

This offer was mine, which he refused. I had to drop the city from the list. On hindsight, perhaps I shouldn't have asked for the now-useless Theology, but I guess WFYABTA is not one of our worries right now. We need reduce the gap first!

Genghis sent some cavalry to our land to pillage and attack some cities. The worst was when he landed a few units, including a trebuchet, at our western shore to attack the not-so-well-defended Nongoma. Fortunately, we managed to scrape up just enough reinforcements from cities nearby to withstand the attack.

Meanwhile, we mustered all our offensive troops for a counter-attack. Khan put up a modest resistance, threatening our stack with cavalry and riflemen. IIRC we sustained a few losses, but that was not enough to stop us:

immortal182.jpg

With the city, we captured the Angkor Wat. I must say that this wasn't a cakewalk, as the screenshot can perhaps show. We were practically in the middle of Mongolian territory. Reinforcing our troops wasn't easy, and we were low on riflemen to protect against Mongolian cavalry. Fortunately, a concerted effort to send more riflemen down there in the next few turns, dancing them around enemy units, eased the situation and we could continue campaigning in Mongolia.

With Khan's attacks falling in intensity, I felt confident enough to send our ancient settler (who had been waiting at our capital since forever), accompanied by riflemen, to settle in the blank area left by the destruction of Shaka's city earlier:

immortal183.jpg

This got us a better spot than the original city, with more production tiles (grass hills, shared horses and a forest).

Back to the front, we marched on the next Mongolian city:

immortal184.jpg

And the next:

immortal185.jpg

It was starting to get just a little inconvenient to build enough garrison troops to defend our new conquests. Fortunately, it was naturally paralleled by a falling Mongolian capacity to conduct counter-attacks.

In the meantime, we discovered Railroads. As you would expect, there are coal sources within our borders, so railroad construction was started right away. Assembly Line was next for factories and infantry.

We made our final conquest this round:

immortal186.jpg

There's another Mongolian city to the west, but I that's as much war as we could take for now. We would probably take over whatever is left of Khan's empire in the next war. I negotiated peace with Khan:

immortal187.jpg

He didn't have much to give. But a break from all that WW was incentive enough. I stopped playing when we discovered Assembly Line.

The tech situation now:

immortal188.jpg

We have nothing on Roosevelt, Huayna and Monty. But I think there's still hope, as you will see. I'm thinking of giving military techs to Shaka to boost his power rating. As it is he's quite the weak spot.

The power graph:

immortal189.jpg

Bad, but we've got Roosevelt on friendly, so he's no threat. Huayna is the one we need to be worried about. I hope we can raise our graph soon by mass-producing infantry and eventually get a DP with Roosevelt (we need Military Tradition for that, and we'd need to have fought our last war).

On a more positive note, the GNP graph:

immortal190.jpg

Our economy has skyrocketed after the adoption of Free Speech. Our size is beginning to show. If we keep improving, I think we should be able to get to Fibre Optics in time to build The Internet and put ourselves firmly in the space race.

The map of our continent:

immortal191.jpg

And the map of the other:

immortal192.jpg

We're bigger than Roosevelt now. And we still have 4 Mongolians cities to take. I think we should build up our forces and infrastructure, letting the WW cool off for a while, and attack Khan one last time with lots of cannons and infantry (enough to take the east and west simultaneously). Hopefully Roosevelt stays cautious with Khan so we would have no problem getting a DP with him after we're done.

As for research, I presume we would go for Scientific Method (no delaying that now) -> Physics -> Electricity, researching towards Fibre Optics. The GS would be of a little help. How should we juggle Industrialism, Plastics, Radio and Computers? I'm quite inclined to go for Plastics first for the 3 Gorges' Dam, but how necessary/risky do you think that is? We might, at any rate, want to delay Computers a little, since we have the Angkor Wat. And should we squeeze in Biology somewhere?

Our main cities are building factories right now to boost production. Interestingly, the Pentagon is still available. Should we make an attempt at that?

I think that's it. Suggest away.

Didn't you accept capitulation from Khan? That makes it hard to declare war! :)

Or is the screenshot from when you were checking what he was willing to pay for peace?

You can't start a new war if you capitulate them...

I checked the save and Khan is not aelf's vassal, so he must have taken capitulation off the table before making the peace deal.

Why not make him vassal though(after you already have one)? Aren't he basically aiming at space at this point? Although taking vassals means he'll prolly run into wyftba which can't be good... Roosvelt can still decide to decleare war on shaka btw, so you aren't really safe...

don't go after the pentagon unless you want a domination victory. otherwise, just get a DP with Roosevelt ASAP and head to the internet.

Isn't that a mongolian city in the West Navajo...ex barbarian I think.

And what's with Rosevelt, do you have random personalities enabled??

But back to the continent at hand, Kill Khan. Shaka your stuck with. So let him spam troops, and use him as a 'shock and awe' spear head.

If your teching for space, Factories, Uni's, Observatories for research labs are required.

3 gorges is worth it, if only for AI denial. I'm too used to the BTS beeline for the internet, so I forget what order to go in.

Do you have a Ironworks city set up, preferably on a river for 3 gorges, and Hydro power for no ill health from power.

for coastal protection, I'm a big fan of Building city garrison Crossbows and upgrading them to machineguns. Though if Grens can get city garrison under warlords, and upgrade to machineguns as well, its a cheaper route.

Space, take a 'Fortress AELF Continental mentality', Dommination, it'll take a mass spam of troops and ships/transports to get a foot hold, let alone a incursion.

Diplomatic, I don't think so, maybe with Rosie being freindly, but you'll need Hyana to build U.N.

Space, you have land, resources, capasity and are free of AI ANNOYANCES. Seems the best route.

Take out Khan soon, and then hole up and make sure you're defended against attacks, tech to the internet, and try to launch the ship first.

I wouldn't build the pentagon, you're not planning to go to war, are you? (Except Khan, who you should be able to beat anyway)

Hopefully, you'll be able to trade a couple of tech too, so you can get techs like Biology.

Oh, yes. I completely forgot to talk about capitulations. I capitulated Shaka as discussed before, since his northern tundra cities don't seem worth the effort. I didn't accept Khan's capitulation, since we are going to finish him off. Those southern cities are probably worth the trouble, and we would have too much motherland unhappiness otherwise. Not to mention the fact that Roosevelt doesn't like Genghis much. The next war shouldn't be long or difficult anyway.

I think at this point space is probably the most viable option. Roosevelt would probably not DoW on Shaka, since they are both pretty good buddies, and Roosy is not exactly a very aggressive guy. He just wasn't on good terms with Monty (who is?), and from experience FDR knows how to spam troops. But, yes, I think we would still have to adopt a fortress mentality due to the threat from Huayna.

So we won't go for the Pentagon. But I guess 3 Gorges would be worth the effort? We don't have Ironworks yet. I think Istanbul is a good candidate for that, but let it build a factory first. Any alternative suggestions for the location?

And so we would only trade for Biology if possible and not research it before Fibre Optics?

Well, it's kinda hard for me to judge how useful Biology would be, as I can't open the save (Warlords), if you think it'll speed up your research towards Fibre Optics, then sure take it. Otherwise, you can just leave it.

Are you still running a specialist economy? Or more of a hybrid (considering all the cottages I see on the screenshots), or a "pure" cottage economy?

It's more of CE, just with Mercantilism. I guess Biology doesn't sound too applicable there, but I was hoping someone would open the save and give some rough estimates. I remember some people swear by Biology most of the time.

Looking back at your screenshots, you seem to have quite a lot of farms, so it might be worth it. But if possible, I'd prefer to get it by trade.

Well, after a long time, beset by real life intervention and a hard drive problem, I've finally almost played this game to its (bitter?) end. You can look forward to the update sometime this weekend. Meanwhile, feel free to make guesses on what has transpired or play a shadow round.

Nobody's interested in the ending? :(

Well, I was hoping to induce more anticipation and speculation a la the old days :p

It looks like BtS has really taken over the forum's attention.

I'm interested. :)
By the way, have you already finished the game, since your post on the 22nd, or will we get another chance to give input?
