The Immortal Challenge 4: Flight of the Phoenix

Well aelf , You should know for a long time that ppl here prefer to lurk your games that to loud mouth ( unlike in the ALC, where people post and think after sometimes :p )

And the fact that you actually have not much of options in here ( or you try to hail mary to space after wiping GK ,you try to conquer the other continent or you try to bost your pop to win via UN ), doesn't help with the discussion ;)

BTW How did it ended ? :p

I'm interested. :)
By the way, have you already finished the game, since your post on the 22nd, or will we get another chance to give input?

Input would serve the purpose of highlighting the differences or lack thereof. This is a learning thread after all, right? :p

We are following this game. We want the old Aelf back with more regular rounds! Failing that, we will take what we can get. Thanks for posting these games.

I'm interested too btw :p

Really curious whether you manage to pull this one off. It's just that I only see the s/s and can't look at the save :(

I will lurk your threads to the end!

M'Hael

Really though, I have learned a lot from your threads.

Immortal got alot easier with BTS so way more people can cope with this level now so it is not as interesting anymore... Sisiutil is at immortal now as well... Deity would maybe be more interesting...

i agree with oyzar. with immortal getting simpler (to the extent that i can beat it), it no longer seems like your games are quite as revolutionary as they were. however, i still watch and wait.

suggestions:
1. more regular rounds
2. if you can handle it, deity would be awesome.

That's cool. I haven't played BtS for some time, but I remember I needed to adjust quite a bit on Emperor. Maybe it would be pretty simple once I get the hang of it.

And, well, with the next update scheduled for this weekend you can't say it isn't regular now ;)

Depending on what my schedule is going to be like, which I shall find out soon, I have an idea for a new series following this one. But I might have to go back to BtS on my own for a while, so it would probably take a few weeks after the end of this game if it's going to run.

Round 11a: 1697AD - 1870AD

Sorry for the slight delay. I didn't have much internet connection over the weekend. I hope it's worth the wait ;)

We researched Combustion next, since it was needed for Plastics and it meant delaying Scientific Method for a while more. We made our way through to Physics quickly and made a trade with Huayna:

immortal193.jpg

Looks like we're catching up. This load of cash would help us keep our tech rate up. Perhaps we would be able to surpass the other continent soon.

While we were researching Electricity next, another GS was born in Edirne:

immortal194.jpg

All the better for quick research.

But our next GP was, should I say, interesting:

immortal195.jpg

Well, we did need a couple of GPs to start a Golden Age later.
And, as you can see from that screenshot, we were finishing up with Industrialism. Plastics was next in the hope of getting the 3 Gorges' Dam.

Then we were ready to take what was left of the Mongolian empire:

immortal196.jpg

We came after Khan's split empire with two stacks, and our shiny new tank joined the eastern front shortly. A shell of his former self, Khan could offer little resistance:

immortal197.jpg

And at the western front too:

immortal198.jpg

The Mongol cities fell in rapid succession:

immortal199.jpg

However, the WW shot up to pretty insane levels immediately after the war began, and even at 30% culture some cities still had unhappiness. Well, we got another GG to help make this worth it:

immortal200.jpg

I sent him to Ankara, as usual. That's when I realised we already had a Military Academy; I can't remember when we built it. Anyway, so there's not much use for this guy except to make him a GMI.

The last Mongol city fell on the next turn:

immortal201.jpg

And that's the end of all the WW and motherland unhappiness in ex-Mongol cities. Good riddance. I think we haven't killed off a civ in some time.

We discovered Plastics one turn later. Unfortunately, Roosevelt had already gotten it when we started researching it. And, to my disappointment, I found out that only cities right next to rivers could build the Dam, which ruled out our capital and most productive city, Istanbul. I thought it's alright as long as there's river within the BFC. Maybe that was Civ3; I had forgotten about this little part of the game. Our 2nd most productive city was beside a river, but its productive capacity was pretty far below our capital as it didn't have Ironworks. It would take more than 30 turns to build the Dam there, which is too long even with the GE to help partially build it, especially since Roosevelt had probably started building it. So, alas, we had to abandon the idea of getting the Dam.

We researched Radio next, and we were the first to do so, allowing us to make some pretty good trades:

immortal202.jpg

Roosevelt didn't have Military Tradition at that time, so I traded for it hoping that I could use it with Radio to get a better trade with him. It would also allow us to sign a defensive pact with him. And that's what we got:

immortal203.jpg

We didn't have to worry about Huayna now.

Unfortunately, Roosevelt somehow got Military Tradition by the next turn. Sneaky AI. We had no choice but to pay for a good trade:

immortal204.jpg

[continued in the next post]

[continued from previous post]

Luckily we got a thick wad of cash from Huayna the turn before to help pay for it. We also got more from Monty:

immortal205.jpg

And, yup, so we managed to trade for Biology. Things were looking good. We had officially caught up with the other continent, so I cancelled our Internet beeline, putting Computers on hold to give the Angkor Wat a little more air time. We went for Rocketry instead so that we could start on the Apollo Program, which is required for the Space Elevator.

We got another GS next, this time at Ankara, which had been running quite a number of specialists:

immortal206.jpg

Another one for lightbulbing. And since we had not built the Dam, we still had a GE hanging around. We stood a good chance of getting another GE from Fusion to use on the Space Elevator, so I decided to use him to complete the Eiffel Tower, which we had been building at Istanbul, so that it would be in time to start on the Apollo Program when Rocketry was discovered:

immortal207.jpg

Not amazingly useful, since we didn't need to push anyone's borders back. However, it ensured high levels of happiness when coupled with Hit Musicals/Singles/Movies, which could be traded for easily, without having to build broadcast towers everywhere. We could then continue growing our cities to achieve as much productivity as possible without a worry. Beats building Broadway/Rock and Roll/Hollywood ourselves.

After Rocketry, we researched Fission as a prerequisite for Fusion. Robotics and Satellites were next for the Space Elevator, followed by Fibre Optics and Fusion.

Unfortunately, our new tech lead has its price:

immortal208.jpg

Not wanting to jeopardise our quest for Fusion, I declined.

A couple of turns later, we completed the Apollo Program:

immortal209.jpg

Once Satellites was discovered, Istanbul began on the Space Elevator.

We got another GP at Edirne, a GE this time:

immortal210.jpg

This was good news, since it meant that we could use 2 GEs on the Elevator, as we did get to Fusion first for a free GE:

immortal211.jpg

Anticipating it, I switched Istanbul's production to SS Docking Bay for several turns to save hammers. With the help of 2 GEs, the Space Elevator was completed immediately:

immortal212.jpg

This certainly made the Elevator worth building, even if it is usually debateable.

Having gotten Fusion, we researched Ecology and Genetics for spaceship parts, with Refrigeration in between (prerequisite for Genetics). And we made another trade with Roosevelt:

immortal213.jpg

Not much point to the trade, but I figured giving Ecology to Roosevelt at this time wouldn't make much difference. Well, the money could be used to help fund espionage activities (we had built Scotland Yard at Edirne). But on that note, our 4 spies on the other continent didn't actually do much sabotage on Roosevelt or Huayna, keeping it minimal to avoid unnecessary risks.

Unfortunately, Roosevelt wasn't too happy anymore anyway:

immortal214.jpg

I thought that Huayna managed to ask him to adopt HR. My mistake, as you will see later. Oh, well. With quite a number of mech infantries now, I didn't think we needed to be too worried.

After discovering Genetics, we pretty much had all the spaceship techs under our belt, so we researched Composites to give us access to the best weapons of the modern era for self-defense, in case things turned nasty.

And we got another GP, this time at our capital:

immortal215.jpg

Well, we didn't need another GE now, and we hadn't had our Golden Age, so he and the Great Prophet started it.

By then, spaceship construction had begun in earnest. We had completed the Docking Bay and Istanbul was building the other expensive part, the Engine. The Stasis Chamber, however, would be the last thing to be completed, which we were building in our 2nd most productive city but which took a long time nevertheless. Costing as many hammers as the Docking Bay, that was not surprising. It would be preceded by the Life Support, Engine and the Cockpit, in order of the latest. Thrusters and Casings were built by a number of different cities.

Meanwhile, our spies made an interesting discovery:

immortal216.jpg

Huayna was building the UN and would complete it. That meant that if we didn't get a Space Victory, we would likely get a Diplomatic one, since the candidates would be Huayna and us and we would most certainly get Roosevelt's votes. With two of the world's biggest population behind us, we would clinch the victory quite easily. But that is if someone else did not launch his ship too early...

Well, what did happen? Find out in the next update.

Nice work so far, I'm glad you could trade for biology.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next update :)

The evil Inca are making the UN while the righteous Ottomans are preparing to take mankind to the next level..... Will the evil Inca manage to elude the world and crown theirselfs as rulers of it? Or the Ottomans will put the man in space? don't lose next episode....

:wallbash:

Good to see the mongols gone , though.

 Fear not, the next update would probably be up tomorrow.

I hate when this happens, i've saved this thread for weeks only to have it end at a freaking CLIFFHANGER GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR btw its July31, the next day...weres the post...

Round 11b: 1697AD - 1870AD

I tried to bribe Roosevelt to be friendly with us again, but I chose the wrong civic unknowingly:

immortal217.jpg

Well, of course it didn't work. I remember Roosevelt's favourite civic was Representation. I think it got changed to Mercantilism somewhere along the line. But no matter; win or lose, the outcome was around the corner.

I tried to cut 1 or 2 turns from the production time of the final part by converting some grasslands to watermills and letting the city run into a little starvation:

immortal218.jpg

I think I managed 1 turn.

And the outcome of the vote for Secretary General was due:

immortal219.jpg

As predicted, we had Roosevelt's votes. If he was willing to vote us as winner, we would have more than enough votes to win.

But that was not going to happen:

immortal220.jpg

Yup, we finally won this game :king:

The first Ottoman to pray towards Mecca from space:

immortal221.jpg

It's not that we were Muslim. But why let that spoil a poetic moment? :D

Now let's take a look at the graphs. The GNP graph:

immortal223.jpg

Ours shot up after we've conquered most of the continent and adopted Free Speech, eventually surpassing everyone once we acquired more cities and our cottages matured. Our massive commerce output can be credited for helping us catch up without the aid of the internet.

The production graph:

immortal224.jpg

Pretty much the same story, except that it took longer since hammer improvements do not mature.

The power graph:

immortal225.jpg

Ours was woefully low, when compared to the others, to the end. However, all our cities were defended by mech infantries and infantries, as well as tanks and modern armour. All cities had more than 1 unit in each. We also had a few battleships and destroyers. Our navy would be decimated in a war, but I think we would be able to defend ourselves against an (lower tech - no one else had Composites) invasion quite well, especially since most of our continent had been railroaded towards the end.

Demographics:

immortal226.jpg

1st in everything that matters (except trade routes, but we were running Mercantilism to the end).

And our final score:

immortal227.jpg

I think it's one of the higher ones. But it's certainly surpassed by the only Domination victory (EMC3).

Well, that's it. Thank you guys for sticking around :)

I'll post a short post-game assessment tomorrow. Feel free to give me some input on that in the meantime. And, oh, since this was a pretty long round, I'm putting up the last save for anyone interested in comparing with shadow games (if there are any).
