The National Honor Society is what it sounds like, which is legit but also bogus because membership dues.

Well, what random got wasn't National Honor Society, just National Society, which is why I would view it suspiciously.

There were several National Honor Societies at my High School and those are legit.

Reading it again, the 'National Society of High School Scholars' just seems like an elevated way of saying 'people with a basic level of education' - I'd question whether you'd really get a business card as 'John Doe, FNSHSS'. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it as FRS, does it?

I'm already an NHS member. This was something else. Looking at these folks' requirements, it doesn't look like membership is especially difficult. They do have some legit associations, so I don't think it's a scam per se, but I'm also not convinced it's worthwhile.

Yeah, by scam I mean if you need to pay to be recognized, it generally isn't a good sign.

If you typically go by the full version of your name, and someone decides to use a shortened version, what's a polite way to tell them so? Or should I just stop being so damn petty?

Man up and tell them you prefer to be called by your longer version.
Nothing wrong with that.

You can point it out once, but don't let yourself be too irritated by it, or it will only encourage people.

Soooo, if you could just call me by my full name... thaaat'd be great.

Simply tell them that you prefer to be called by the name Randomnerd10, and that you only use the shortened version when amongst your true BFFs.

If you filled up a swimming pool with jello would it break the filter?

I would think that it would be thick enough to damage it. That said, I wouldn't know for sure.

Sometimes I see the term "fantasy tech" written around the internet. What is it, exactly? Is it something like the realm of Star Trek/Star Wars, or steampunk, or is it more of a Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter type of thing?

It is literal.

Fantasy: an idea with no basis in reality.

It might be referring to things like the Quidditch apparatuses and wands. I wouldn't really put Star Trek in the same category since many of the techs in ST are reaaaaaally drawn out (once read a hard-sci role play in the ST universe, never again).
