The many questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread XV

I try to be nice but they attack me, the people.

You aren't alone. Develop a thick skin about it. And pay more attention to your presentation. Watch the specific things that you get attacked for, and think about other ways of phrasing those things.

Why do people dislike me when all i've been is decent to everyone here?

I try to be nice but they attack me, the people.

You have to be more of a dick. People don't respect people who defer to others in conversation.

Of course more people will be strongly against you, but you will have your own strong supporters too as a result so screw those naysayers.

True, that didn't answer the question, but I still never knew names were regulated there. That's very interesting. Thank you.

Is this an old regulation? It seems like something that would be done to prevent people from naming their children after Nazi leaders.

Ah...
Actually what i said wasn't entirely correct.

Apparently it's a thing where a judge has a final call in the case of dispute (between you and city hall or whomever), which is apperently rather frequent. There is no "powerful list of viable names", but a set of rather vague guidelines and authorities have to approve of names.
A given name is supposed to "not offend the religious feelings of others" (hence the Jesus thing (it's ok to call your kid Djehad though)). It should not hurt the well being and prospects of the child (german wikipedia claims both Judas and Kain could not be used). And the given name either has to indicate the sex or additional names have to be given that indicate the sex.
By those guidelines that Maria thing shouldn't be much trouble. I have no idea what the actual exception there is - maybe that the name isn't ambiguous but simply a girls name.

For the Nazi leaders:
Adolf as a name is like dead. I have no knowledge of anyone (not even Neonazis) trying to call their kid Adolf. But that's about it. Same as Hitler most of the Nazi leaders had perfectly ordinary (at the time) given names and no other name was stigmatised.
Heinreich, Herrmann, Joseph, Albert, Richard, Victor, Karl, Erich, Hans, Walter (these in their usual form) would be still perfectly acceptable, even though most of them would sound rather old-fashioned. Joseph and i guess Richard are still "normal" names that don't sound to dated.
The trick here is that Hitler was the only one who managed to become the No1 representative of his name.
Calling your kid "Göbbels" would be impossible anyway. It's usually not allowed to give your child a surname or brand name as given name.

Disclaimer: This post is still weak on research. Any 1st semester law student could probably give you a way better answer. They love this stuff like catnip cause it's so badly defined and often comes down to a judgement call.

Having viewed this video, are you more or less attracted to Natalie Portman?

BOARDWALK EMPIRE!!!!

best show on tv right now!

I've changed for the mods, for the posters but the hatred, the bile, the out of forum and in forum hatred continues and it hurts so much and i wish certain people would stop it hurts and i cannot stop the hurt

Have a private conversation with one of the moderators. And see if you can work out a resolution, if you're problem is mainly with just a couple of people.

Spread the word, Silvia Plath's alive gentlemen!

Serious note: you can avoid on-forum hatred by, well, avoiding arguments. Can't say why people don't like you in real life but being decent to people will probably help

What is the average height, in imperial measurements, of all the adult humans in the world?

I know there's average height by country and by sex, but what is the GLOBAL average, men and woman?

On a related note to the previous poster does everyone else in the developed world who use the more modern metric system for measurements actually speak of how high someone is in centimeters?

Honestly I don't think I could ever get used to saying how tall anyone is in centimeters...

Of course! In the civilized world no one would even think to transform their height into feet. No more than you would think saying it as fraction of stadiums or your salary as Sudanese pounds. Meter and it's derivatives are the only length measurement for us, and we know the other measurements only as a curiosity. People usually hear imperial measure units couple of times in school and forget them right after that.

and it's probably better that way, after all we place too much an emphasis on being over 6' for men.

Here is a hypothetical question:

I read this article on wikipedia about Jury Selection and found myself disgusted with how this part of our judicial system works. So my question is if I were to be screened by an attourney and I deliberately lie about my beliefs to get chose for the jury and then deliberately refuse to go with the verdict of my other peers to initiate a hung jury because I disagree with the fairness of the law that was broken - Is that Illegal?

Because if I was ever called on for Jury Duty for a case such as possession of Marijuana or some other law I disagree with I would deliberately give a not guilty verdict based on my personal beliefs on the law despite the evidence and the fact I am supposed to base my verdict on wether he broke the law or not.

If I can make my argument convincing enough for why i voted a certain way despite the fact there may be evidence proving otherwise is it still legit to give a different verdict and refuse to change my position no matter what under personal moral obligations?

There are alternate jurors. And if you are suspected of being obstructionist along those lines they might just replace you. Depends on how well you can hold your act. Keep in mind that trial lawyers deal with people trying to lie to them every day.

Aside from replacement, are there other consequences for being an obstructive juror?

That depends on just what you did. If the judge decided to hold you in contempt, he could fine you or send you to jail for a while.
