The name Adolf

Everything I'm seeing (and I don't read German, so no doubt the truly authoritative links are beyond me) is that your assumption is incorrect, the name must be distinctly masculine or feminine as appropriate, no androgeny.
IIRC you can give your kid a name that can be both masculine or feminine (such as Maria, Andrea, Dominique), but in this case you'll have to add a second surname to clear it up. So calling your kid "Maria Peter Paul" certainly is allowed ;)

My girlfriend's step father is called Osman. His son is called Oktay Genghis.
So what's wrong with Osman ? :hmm:

Theres an actual public figure in the UK named Lord Ramsbottom. Somehow BBC commentators manage not to giggle when they say his name.

Adolphe was actually a rather popular name in France at the beginning of the 20th century !

What's funny when you look at official French first name statistics is how that name has disappeared during the 1930's. Actually, there's been something like 1 "Adolphe" born in France since 1945 !

However, what is disturbing is that there has been half a dozen "Adolf"s which was born since then. :(

I think if there were suddenly lots of babies named 'Pol Pot' it would really be time to start worrying.

Apparently there are more than 4,000 people in France still alive and named Adolphe.
In the XXth century, 1908 was the year where Adolphe was the most given, to... 596 babies. So I don't think it was THAT popular :)

And since 1945 it has been steadily given to at least a dozen babies. Poor kids :(

I am almost 100% sure that there is at least 1 child around here that is named Adolf Hitler. Gypsy parents do that ... i saw some preety intresting names on the news about this. The news was about a gypsy mother naming her child "Osama ben Laden" but they also said some other names that are popular: Thermopane, BMW, President, Autobahn, Portugal, Keyboard and other such "names" ...
So i am sure at least 1 person named their child Hitler. Maybe even Pol Pot ... but i doubt they heard of him.

Oh and btw, i am not joking. I am sure that ANY romanian can confirm this.

Actually, I was wrong in my remembrance about the Adolphe name, thanks for having corrected it Masquerouge. :)

As for the first name "Adolf" (and not "Adolphe"), the graphic of birth is actually a lot funnier than I expected !

Obviously 16 Frenchmen have been named "Adolf" between 1939 and 1944. :mischief:

Another funny graphic is for the first name "Ossama" (as Ben Laden). Obviously it was getting very popular in France, all of a sudden, in 2001, it had totally desappeared from charts !

Sorry to disturb you with another graphic, but I've just discovered a funny toy so I want to share with you my observations.

Here's a graphic showing the distribution of Frenchmen named "Ali" (which is a common Muslim name). As you can see, the large wave of muslim immigration in France isn't now, but it was during the 50's and 60's.
