The new infraction system explained

My post had nothing to do with "Interpreting the rules" which is fine, my point was about arbitrarily deciding to ban someone for being a "Jerk" or "Stupid" which people are suggesting but is not allowed under the rules of the site.

Being a jerk is definitely not allowed.

I agree, we shouldn't just arbitrarily decide to ban someone for no reason, that wouldn't make much sense. What I'm saying, though, is that no matter what, bans will be up to moderator discretion because it is up to moderator discretion (although, we do certainly have guidelines we follow) to decide how many points to issue in infractions.

If someone is two points away from a ban and they break a rule, whether or not to give that person one point or two is up to the mod.

Well, yes, but to give someone eight points for a spam infraction would not be up to a mod.

Being a jerk is subjective, which was my point. People want it to be totally subjective. Which would be bad news if you are disliked.

I suggest this

3 month expiry for Small infractions
6 month expiry for Medium infreactions
12 month expirty for Big Infreactions.

is it against the rules to say bad things about other CFCers on websites outside this one, like lets say DYOS wiki, I found a ton of biased articles there the other day
Grey area.

But given that we have no control over other sites, I guess so long as you don't link back to them here it's fine...? I dunno.

I was just wondering if anybody else liked my system for the expirations.

I like your idea.

Minor infractions shouldn't last a year.

I don't mind them lasting longer though. Maybe a 1 month/3 month/12 month scale for expiry.

If not a mod, who? It is their JOB, paid or volunteered to keep this place running.. not just hand out infractions. If someone is detrimental to the forum, they should have the power to deal with it. TF does not have the time to deal with some petty matters.

Why should everyone else suffer during the time it takes for someone to learn the hard way?

Constanza Rule should have been added at this opportunity.

No one has the rite to be here, they have even less of a rite to ruin the experience for others.

FORUM SPECIFIC perma bans should be given out a lot more often. I'm thinking Forum Games and OT especially.

I agree with forum specific bans also.

I know you are not, I was just including that proviso so Dom couldn't welp that you're not paid..

Im not sure what you mean. 1 month is shorter than 3 months or 12 :crazyeye: Nobody else commented on my suggestion though which makes me wonder if its any good.

For forum specfic permbans I usually donot see forum specific tempbans.

Forum specific temp/perm bans aren't used very often here. Occasionally we've had a poster that's been so disruptive to a certain forum that we've requested TF yank access to that forum. This is usually in the Civ forums. I know of only one case where access to OT has been yanked, and another where access to SF has been yanked. Eventually access has been restored.

However it is something that we're considering now, tempbanning someone from a particular forum. Details are still being worked on.

Your idea is interesting but I think that the amount of infractions should determine how long they stay on your active record. If someone is doing lots of small things is it better than one or two big ones.

Say infractions last one year except for good behaviour.
Every month, one infraction point removed from oldest infraction if no infractions or ban period in last month.

Well with such reservations about a total ban.. giving people 6 months, or even 12 months banned from where they cause problems, will teach them to post in a proper manner. It would also stop them ruining the experience for everyone else.

I like that idea too.

Just a longer wait for me to get the points to expire, literally. This is all that this is. The 12 month wait is simply ridiculous however.

12 months is a long time, IMO a 6 month wait for expiration combined with good moderating (Meaning: Giving fair warnings and explaining actions within a thread, while being consistent) and use of forum specific bans certain troublemakers, will resolve most issues. Of course, this makes the assumption that people know how to use the "ignore" feature or have enough self-discipline to avoid threads which will annoy/upset them.

Even 4 months is a looong time to be banned from anywhere.
