I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm pretty sure we know the difference between discussing the problems off the coast of Somalia and illegal sharing.
“Piracy”
Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)
If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”
Well I not going to argue about the terms here. But I would suggest that its made more clearly in the rules what it refers to.
This is why I proposed making it harder to get the first ban, but easier to get subsequent ones. Raise the threshold for innocent stupidity, and lower it for repeat offenders.
Every month, one infraction point removed from oldest infraction if no infractions or ban period in last month.
Nobody is going to think that that rule refers to Somalia.
Does anybody see anything wrong with my idea![]()
Silurian's system is incredibly simple, but would actually work. Giving the most ardent infraction surfers only 1 infraction a month would solve them. It would also solve people who constantly, but only slightly annoy, since they would build up points and be easily banned unless they changed their ways.
Mods have the power to set a infractions length.. how much extra work would it be to manually set each infraction to last a month longer than any current infractions that user has?
In order to set a manual infraction we have to enter the data into fields directly. When we use a 'standard' or 'regular' infraction, it's clicking a radio button, and a checkbox if it's supposed to be a warning. So we generally don't set a manual infraction.Mods have the power to set a infractions length.. how much extra work would it be to manually set each infraction to last a month longer than any current infractions that user has?
Hard to say without counting. Mods don't have a panel to look at that shows infractions, it just shows up on a user's page. 1,000's, probably, if you count adspammers. Maybe3 the admins have that information, but without going through the infraction forum manually we don't.#Out of curiosity, how many people (in general) are there on CFC with with infractions? we talking 10's, 100's, 1000's!?
It is not harsh; it is the law. If anyone is caught using our PM system for illegal file sharing, they will be permanently banned.
Are we allowed to attempt to contact people for files and then report them if they provide or is that not playing fair?
