the "once and for all!" topic

I gotta disagree, I use the search function quite often. It's all a matter of using the right search words and as few as possible. The problem is when people use "HELP" or some other non descriptive title for their thread, which will never show up in a search, unless you search for "help" ;)

I just did a search for keywords in the posts (choosing, at random, "random number generator"). It pulled up 25 threads, most of which had to do with a random aspect of the game (resource placement, map generation, combat). None of these had the keywords in the titles, but the posts mentioned them.

Perhaps one can add:

#46 : Search the post content, not just the titles. No, really, the search engine is fast enough.

I do agree that it can get a little irritating to see the same question asked twice on the same day, even the same page, but the forum is supposed to be for helping people out and when someone gets snotty and tells someone to use the search function, that isn't helping. It takes just as much energy to give the questioner good advice as it does to flame them and tell them to use the search.

No, it doesn't. Saying "Please use the search function" requires far less energy than:

1) Retyping probability math;
2) Retyping the history of Nazi Germany;
3) Retyping a cultural analysis of early Native American civilizations;
4) Retyping a tech tree; and
5) Retyping a religious debate.

A little tolerance goes a long way, we were all beginners here once.

The primary difference would be that I was a beginner who used -- and still uses -- the search function. :)

#47 If you win every single game you play, you really do need to move up a level.

(not saying I always live up to that rule myself....)

#48. Don't be ashamed because you're playing on a low difficulty. That's what you're used to, you can play by it and if anyone says you should move up, use your own judgement, but don't be forced to move up because they told you to

#49. Difficulty levels, seriously, unless you're going to play online, then there's no need to get up to levels like Prince or Emperor any time soon

#50- Firaxis will not add religion-specific traits, ever, because (a) there is not universal trait for any religion and (b) it would offend many people.

# 6 : The fans have run extensive tests; the random number generator/combat odds are NOT weighted toward the AI.

It doesn't seem to work as advertised though; you can count less on 99.x% chances than you should be able to. This works both ways though, so there's nothing truly unfair if you know you need to take the stated odds with a grain of salt.

#51 Score is unimportant unless you're pursuing a Time victory, because it doesn't reflect:
-Armies ( AI check the power graph... so should you )
-Big tech scheme ( Rifling can be more important than democracy if you're planning a war... but Democracy worths more :science: and weights more in score )
-Diplo ( a DP partner can be pretty useful ;) .. and again that doesn't appear in score )

#52. Look at your actual points when you look at your score (it'll be shown in a transparent box). If you get a victory on that turn, you'll get that many points. So the higher that number is, the better

#54. Forment Unhappiness is worse than poisoning a water supply. Without a working population, your city dies and cannot produce a thing. With a sick city, you can still produce things and food is only reduced in small amounts each turn

#55 Real life armies do not win wars, and never had, by spending most of their money on artillery, and bombing the enemy at long distance without taking any damage. Real life generals don't advocate spending 75% of the military budget on artillery and assuming they can win the war with practically no casualties. Even in modern times, when artillery is used on the battlefield, armor and aircraft are usually the dominant arms. Real life artillery was very rarely used in battles before modern times (16th - 17th century). Therefore, Firaxis' change from CIV III (where artillery was the dominant arm) is correct on an historical basis; don't say Civ III is better because it is more realistic in this capacity.

#56 Don't try to catch Buddahism first, try hinduism, it's easier. (If you want an early religion)

#57 Don't trade Alphabet to anyone.

I'm glad at least the firaxis lies to us all threads are done. The anti-espionage threads are going away too. My only irritation right now are the economy threads.

#57 YOU NEEEEED either 1.61 or 1.74 already installed on you comp for BtS to install. It will try to install 1.74 when you put the disc in but it won't work if you have 1.00, 1.09, or 1.52. GET 1.74 FIRST if you don't already have it or 1.61!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#61 Forts in BtS:
-Can connect resources, like if it was a mine ,a pasture , a farm a plantation ,well,.... ,but does not give the extra yields
-can host air units
-Can host naval units
-2 Seaside or lakeside forts can act as a canal between water bodies. And fort, city , fort and city, fort, fort doesn't work unless the middle element is waterside as well
-A seaside fort cas serve as a trade route connector if inside or your cultural borders. Same applies to connecting resources in small islands inside your cultural borders.

#62 Some units have ATTACK bonus against others - classic example being Chariot, which has +100% ATTACK against Axeman. As it is ATTACK bonus, Chariots do not DEFEND well against them. Otoh, some units have all-around bonuses against others - Spearman has always +100% against any mounted unit, on both ATTACK and DEFENSE.

Regarding the use of search, perhaps if more of the threads that have commonly asked questions were stickied it would reduce the repetitive questions. For example, Ori's Random Events List thread really should be stickied in the Strategy Articles Forum. It seems like every few days someone asks a question about random events or quests. But I also agree that many users do not try to look for the answer but post questions for others to answer for them.
