The questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread VI

I suspect because the USSR was successful in promoting it across the world, and helped revolutionaries who argueably were trying to better their country versus the status quo. Also the red scare has been over a long time; During it's heyday, might not the sickle and hammer have been as ugly as a swatiska. Probably also because communism doesn't have a genoicidal ideology, just some communist leaders pursued power by any means.

Why isn't the hammer and sickle considered equally evil as the Nazi swastika? Historically, Communists have been significantly worse than Nazis. It seems to me that they should be banned in every country that bans the Nazi party, and any website that promotes Communism should be loathed equally as websites that promote anything Nazi.

Because the vast majority of people disagree with you.

That's the Königgrätzer Marsch. Composed after the Prussian victory there over the Austrians in 1866. Still popular, not just Nazis liked it.

New question, possibly deserves own thread.

In my public speaking class I have a particularly aggravating teacher, she has been rude and unhelpful to many students. One classmate I spoke too talked about how she had not returned any of his calls or E-mails causing him to fail a major assignment (He dropped and complained to the Dean). She does a poor job explaining what she wants and she talks down to us constantly, also she claims to be Professor of the year at the Major University she teaches at (I'm getting my General stuff done at a Community College where she teaches as an Adjunct). So she is apparently well respected, but she is a horrible teacher, has about 95% negative reviews on ratemyproffessor.com, and is disrespectful to students in my class. About 50% of the class has already dropped.

That's just the backstory...

Today I received the grade for my last speech (Out of 3 speeches in the semester so it's a major part of my grade), and I lost 7 points because because she said that I had not cited one of my sources in the speech. I told her I was quite sure I had and she said emphatically that I had not. Now I happened to already have been suspicious of her so when I gave my speech I secretly recorded it, when I got home I checked my recording and found that yes I had cited the source. So she was taking off points for something I had done correctly AND when asked about it and given the opportunity to fix it and she did not.

Now what do I do? Just take the point loss and keep going? (I still have a "B" average). Confront her with my recording and ask for my grade to be changed? Or go straight to the Dean or something and say I feel she is being biased against me?

I don't want to let this slide, but I have a feeling if I push it, or even admit to recording the speech she will try to take vengeance upon me at a later point, which since I still have about 50% of the class grade to go could of course be a problem.

Any advice?

I would go to her first, I think, give her a chance but the very next time she tries anything, to the dean and try to get her outta there :yuck:

Confront her with the evidence, and if she still refuses, tell the appropriate authorites. You can't be treated like that.

I wouldn't say the vast majority, but certainly a lot.

The Nazis had killing Jews as a specific and overt part of their doctrine. Communists, no matter how radically authoritarian or Stalinist, never had killing a certain group as part of their doctrine. Also, the swastika has come to symbolize hate and racism and other types of discrimination in general.

Potentially dangerous because of wiretap laws, assuming they apply in the locality. It's also probably safe to say that her past negative relations with her students has poisoned her relations with new students.

I'd probably politely offer to play her the tape as proof.
If she doesn't agree, I don't think I'd risk going to her boss simply because of the wiretap issue. Just add to her negative ratings. Spread the word to your friends, and avoid her for life :)

Yes, seriously be careful with that recording, you don't want to get yourself in real trouble. I'm not even sure about politely telling her, she sounds like she might go ballistic about something like that. Might be good if you just got a number of other students to support your claim. That would help too if you were to file a real complaint about her with the dean.

Maybe the dean should simply be made aware of her ratings, if he's not allergic to sites like that.

All in all, you have to consider whether she might change (or be made to change by the dean), and if gaining that is worth the risk of really ruining relations with her in case it doesn't work out. Depends on how much you care about the grade, and for how much longer you'd have to suffer under her.

What is more embarrassing, 80s Hair Bands or 90s Shoegazing Bands?

I don't understand what the problem is... if a teacher is being a deliberate ass to you, it should be reported, and you shouldn't get in trouble for doing so. What is this silly American education system>
