How is the doctor an idiot? :dunno:

Overuse of antibiotics is a killer.

Unless the person is immune compromised the best result for the whole society is for them to gargle salt/ aspirin water and just take it on the chin. Or throat even.

Proscribing antibiotics comes at the cost of breeding stronger bugs. See it as each flavour of antibiotic has a limited number of uses. Use it once for a sore throat and that's one use, statically speaking, spent. Could have been spent on something serious or something trivial. In this case spent on something the symptoms of which were of the same order of magnitude as the side effects of a course of anti-bionics and that anti-biotics will prob not even help.

The worst thing about this kind of use is that even the patient knows it's fairly pointless defensive medicine. So they do not complete the course because they know they didnt really need it. So the bugs in their body get a work-out against the anti-biotic. An inoculation if you like.

That is a matter of certain concern, then, if antibiotics are being prescribed for patients so liberally.

If it makes any difference, I'm taking amoxicillin. Novamoxin. I've never taken antibiotics before.

Has anyone else seen An Inspector Calls? It's a great play, but I didn't get some of it:

  • Was there necessarily a girl who committed suicide at all?
  • Are Eva Smith and Daisy Renton necessarily the same person?
  • If Goole is not a policeman, how come he knows so much about everything?
  • Did everyone see the same photograph?

Any literate people, please help!

I studied the damn thing for GCSE, so here goes.

a) Yes, she committed suicide, but as a result of the bourgeois, aristorcratic famiyl all being equally guilty.
b)Cant remember but IIRC yes.
c)Goole is not a policeman as such. In fact, he's not quite of this world.
Spoiler :
He's a ghost!
He describes WWI years before it happens, and such forth.

d)Don't know, it's never stated

Yes, it's implied that Goole is a ghost or something supernatural like that, there to reveal the consequences of the Birlings actions relating to the dead girl. (I also had to study it).

I said neccessarily - is there anything that actually proves that there was a girl commiting suicide, or is it some sort of hoax? Maybe I'm missing the point here

It's been about five or six years since I read it, and I can't remember if there is any 100% undeniable infallible proof that there was indeed a suicide, but I always assumed that the dead girl was indeed a real dead girl and not a fake one. I don't think you're missing the point however, it's a legitimate question (what if the whole thing was a hoax, put up by the 'dead' girl(s), or someone else, like Goole? To make them think more carefully about their actions or even just spook them for giggles?).

Though I think the main point of the play was to demonstrate the selfishness of the Birlings, hoax or not.

(Yes nonny-noncon, I think we were in the same class).

South African, I would say, but middle-class so less obvious

Sounds like a fireman/ cop/ senior union rep/ non-cockney london cabbie speaking carefully to me. I think the trace accent is just him taking care not to drop his h's on film, but I'ld bet he does after his second pint.

How come a fast, intensive, constant action sport like Hockey is not popular in the US, yet a constantly stopped, commercial full sport like Football is the top sport?

Because Canada sucks.
