The Riddles Thread

I've got an easy/stupid one like that too.

A plane crashes directly on the border of the United States and Mexico. In which country do they bury the survivors?

Well the survivors survived right? As in they didn't die. So why bury them? Unless the people who first arrive at the crash sight are some sort of sadists.

I still don't understand the symmetry thing

Group 1: A M T U V W Y
Group 2: B C D E K
Group 3: F G J L N P Q R S Z
Group 4: H I O X

Really though N S Z should be in a 5th group

Spoiler :
group 1 - vertical symmetry
group 2 - horizontal symmetry
group 3 - no symmetry
group 4 - both vertical and horizontal symmetry
"group 5" - rotational symmetry

Is it something to do with the symmetry of the survivors and their addiction to pink rhubarb?

(I've a feeling I'm going to solve these riddles any time soon now.)

Ding ding :)

If it is any consolation PG, I used to have my wife tear the "answers in back" pages out of puzzle books, which I would then take to sea with me on the submarine. That one had the entire engineering department grinding at it for about two weeks before anyone sorted it out.

Here's a question from Singapore (might as well be a riddle :))

=====================

Albert and Bernard just met Cheryl. “When’s your birthday?” Albert asked Cheryl.
Cheryl thought a second and said, “I’m not going to tell you, but I’ll give you some clues.” She wrote down a list of 10 dates:

May 15, May 16, May 19

June 17, June 18

July 14, July 16

August 14, August 15, August 17
“My birthday is one of these,” she said.
Then Cheryl whispered in Albert’s ear the month — and only the month — of her birthday. To Bernard, she whispered the day, and only the day.

“Can you figure it out now?” she asked Albert.
Albert: I don’t know when your birthday is, but I know Bernard doesn’t know, either.
Bernard: I didn’t know originally, but now I do.
Albert: Well, now I know, too!

When is Cheryl’s birthday?

Spoiler :
July 16.

If she told Bernard 18 or 19 he would know, since each of them only occurs once. So for Albert to know that Bernard does NOT know he has to know she couldn't have told him 18 or 19. The only way he can know that is that she did not tell HIM either of the corresponding months; May and June are out.

Bernard gets that, and knowing that May and June are out he now knows the answer, so the 14 is out because it occurs in both months so he still would not know. That leaves July 16, August 15, and August 17.

If Albert had been told August he would still not know whether Bernard was told 15 or 17. The only way he now knows the answer too is if he was told July, so July 16.

Full disclosure...I did work all this out, but it took me longer than it may appear because I saw this on another forum and did all the working out last week. This was just a recap.

What's red when it's green and black when it's not?

Tim's up to something.

Okay, so a riddle/puzzle/survival challenge thing.

You are in a locked room with four radioactive pellets. It is possible to follow the instructions and survive, but only if you make the right choices. The four pellets are clearly marked and emit particles at the same rate. One emits alpha particles, one beta, one gamma, and the last emits neutrons.

There is a launch tube, which you can use to dispose of one pellet of your choice, but the other three you have to put one in your pocket, hold another in your hand, and swallow the third in order to be released from the room. What do you do with each pellet?

Lemme think

Spoiler :

Launch Gamma (because they're friggin' gamma rays)
Pocket Betas - (because they're smaller and therefore have more penetration then alphas)
Hand alphas
Swallow neutrons -(who the hell worries about neutrons? Also they don't have much electromagnetic interaction so they're probably fine)

Spoiler :
who the hell gives a damn about alpha particles? a piece of paper can stop them, let a lone some stomach lining

Spoiler :
They would kill cells in your stomach lining. The dead skin cells that make up the outermost layer of skin will stop them as effectively as the paper will.
