The Sumerian Empire

You're a GREAT storyteller. That's why everyone has been so impatient. I understand it if you say it's hard. Just don't put yourself down. This one is a classic. :goodjob:

1275 A.D.
Domestic Advisor- Sir, the Egyptians have listened to Adam Smith and his talk of free trade, supply & demand, economic growth and the lack of government involvement in all of them. Cleopatra has commisioned a large trading company, in his name.
s449-egypt_bulids_smiiths.jpg

1305 A.D.
Science Advisor- The Arabs say they now have a better understanding of the laws that govern the universe. They are studying many forms of matter & energy and how they interact with each other. The Arabic scientists are referring to this as Physics.
King Gudea- Arabia seems to be our chief science rival, cause they are discovering new technology as quickly as we are. I don't want them to get too far ahead of us, so keep me up to date on all their scientific breakthroughs.

1320 A.D.
s459a-_SA_talks.jpg

s459-military_trad.jpg

Military Advisor- Our firearm has been upgraded from a one-shot weapon to a multi-shot weapon. These new traditions will keep us more organized and our knights can be outfitted with this new rifle. I think the era of hand-to-hand combat is coming to an end.
King Gudea- Begin upgrading all of our knights and all other units that can be. You will disband any military units that cannot be upgraded and those men can return to their families.
Military Advisor- I will start all upgrades immediately.
King Gudea- Where is the foreign advisor?

A few moments later-
Foreign Advisor- I have already been in contact with Abu Bakr. He is willing to teach us about physics, if we let his top General study our military traditions.
King Gudea- Make the exchange, but do not let this General do any snooping around on his own.
s460-_trade_mil_trad_for_physics.jpg

Science Advisor- Sir, we would like to further our studies into magnetism. We have known for a long time that magnetism exists, but did not know what to do with that knowledge. We shall look into it and see what comes up.
King Gudea- Very well. You and your colleagues have been doing quite well in your research! I will continue to finance your studies.
Science Advisor- Thank you, my King.

1325 A.D.
Domestic Advisor- Great One, the Black Death has worsened and spread to 22 cities. Thousands of Sumerian citizens are dead and a lot of people are starting to panic.
King Gudea- Without a cure there is very little that can be done. To stem the increasing panic, we can send aid to all stricken cities. Have all 'clean' cities send wagons filled with food and other needed goods and stockpile these goods a short distance from each afflicted city. The inhabitants of these cities can then come out to the stockpiles and get what they need.

1340 A.D.
s464-magnetism.jpg

Foreign Advisor- My King, the Arabian scientists are very proud of their new theory of gravity. They are asking for more than just a straight-up trade for our invention of the compass.
King Gudea- Others may be impressed with this compass, but it doesn't do much for me. On the other hand, this new theory about gravity sounds very interesting! Do what you must to get it.
s468-trade_magnet_of_tog.jpg

Science Advisor- All these recent advancements in knowledge are just simply amazing! And that's with me being in the midst of their development. Many doors have opened for us and our research can now head in any number of directions. My research team will decide on our next scientific target and get back to you.
King Gudea- Yes, the sands of time are bringing a new era upon us and there is much to look forward to on the horizon. One day we are using stone tools, another day we are working with iron and now we are utilizing gunpowder. I'm very curious as to what you will come up with next.

1342 A.D.
Military Advisor- Master, the Arabs are quickly gaining strength and are stepping all over the Greeks. Alexander has been pushed back to Herakleia, which is his last city.
s467-greeks_have_1_city.jpg

King Gudea- Abu has almost doubled his territory, hasn't he?
Military Advisor- Yes he has and only we control more land than him.

1345 A.D.
King Gudea, Gilgamesh and many others were all gathered around the science advisor to hear about the newest scientific ideas. They were all listening intently to him explain about the strange substance that he was holding in his hand. It was small, black, messy and he was referring to it as coal. A theory, on the possible use of coal, was being explained when the military advisor rushed in-
Military Advisor- Sir, Egypt has entered our territory with 31 knight units and 3 knight armies.
King Gudea- Tell them to leave, or else.
473-egypt_intudes.jpg

Later-
Military Advisor- The Egyptians have withdrawn and did not offer an explanation for their advance.
King Gudea- Create a blockade along that border using our military units. They will not intrude if there is no way thru, and if they do-then we know what their intentions are.
Foreign Advisor- Cleopatra is at war with the Byzantines and her forces may have been just moving thru.
King Gudea- Miss Cleo did not ask and now her troops must take a water route. She should have already learned that you just can't walk all over Sumeria. No pun intended.

1350 A.D.
Foreign Advisor- Sir, you are going to laugh at this.
s474-otto_arab_vs_greek.jpg

Foreign Advisor- The Greeks and Ottomans are both on the edge of extinction with 1 city apiece, and they choose to wage war with each other. What idiots!
King Gudea- They are either very brave or very foolhardy. Just choose one, cause it won't matter once they're gone.

IA_sign.jpg

1360 A.D.
With two decades(4 turns) of research sunk into the steam engine and no clear development in sight, King Gudea began to grow impatient. Knowing that scientists from several nations could collaborate and experiance a breakthru much quicker than alone, he decided to trade to all that were behind technologically. The secrets of metallurgy and magnetism, the theory of gravity and also the new military traditions were all traded away. Those that could pay gold did so, but for once King Gudea did not care about the gold. He was more concerned about developing some of the new technologies he had heard so much about and launching Sumeria full-speed into this new era.

1370 A.D.
s478b-da_talks.jpg

King Gudea- That is a horribly high number! Never could I have dreamed of our nation being so decimated by something we can't even see. The doctors and scientists say they may be able to develop a medicine to conquer this pestilence. Let's hope they're right!
Ali Rabban- I've been working with some doctors and we've come up with a few ideas. We will continue to do minor testing, but we eventually will need full funding to research this thoroughly.
King Gudea- Let me know when you have a solid idea to run with and funding will then be directed your way.

1375 A.D.
s479-steampower.jpg

s479a-sa_talks.jpg

King Gudea- You are right, these machines will revolutionize this nation. Let me know if you uncover a secondary source of coal, cause it would be nice to have a backup supply. By the way, that spiffy monocle you have on is much better than that ridiculous wizard hat you used to wear.
(Industrialization in 7 turns @ 50%)

1380 A.D.
Military Advisor- Theodora is hammering away on the Zulu and has captured their capital.
s480-zimbabwe_captured.jpg

Military Advisor- Shaka isn't going to last long being sandwiched between Rome & Byzantium and being at war with both.
King Gudea- I had looked forward to meeting Shaka's forces in battle, but that may not come to pass. Too bad!

1385 A.D.
Trade Advisor- Sir, we have uncovered a secondary source of coal. The city of Agade is practically sitting on top of it, so mining it may be difficult.
King Gudea- Excellent! We have a backup source, in case we need it.
(Rome and Arabia have Steam Power, Egypt develops Medicine)

1410 A.D.
s482-industy.jpg

Domestic Advisor- I will begin to assign our major cities to building factories and coal plants. According to what I have heard, this should cause our production to shoot thru the roof!
King Gudea- I'm all for increasing production in our cities, but all the Sumerian people that died in the plague are still on my mind. Egypt has developed a number of medicines and they may have one that will counteract any future plagues. Cleopatra had better divulge that information in trade for our factory designs, or...well, just do what it takes to get her knowledge of medicine!
Foreign Advisor- We could have a spy steal it.
King Gudea- No. I do not want to risk a war right now.
Foreign Advisor- I will contact Cleopatra immediately.

Later-
Foreign Advisor- We had to sweeten the deal with shipments of ivory and dyes, but we now have extensive medicinal knowledge.
King Gudea- That is such a relief. Good job!
Ali Rabban- Thank you, my King! The doctors I have been working with will be overjoyed to get their hands on this.
s483-indust_for_medicine.jpg

King Gudea- What's with that stupid bonnet that Cleopatra is wearing? Not real fond of that!

Science Advisor- My King, for our next project we believe we can harness the power of lightning! Electricity could then be provided by coupling a steam engine with magnets and many of the projects we have on the drawing board would then have a power source.
King Gudea- You definately have my attention now. I will continue to finance your research.

1415 A.D.
Foreign Advisor- The Arabs have acquired industrialization. I'm not sure if they researched it on their own or got it from Egypt.

1425 A.D.
s485-arabs_demand_wine.jpg

King Gudea- Well Abu, it looks like we are going to tempt your wrath. Do I need to be concerned about this? I would like to see any Arab army stats you have on file.
s485b-ma_talks.jpg

s485a-arab_army.jpg

King Gudea- There is one thing the Arabs have on us and that's a good-sized fleet.

1420 to 1430 A.D.
Foreign Advisor- Great One, on their way to us the Arabs have finished off the Greeks.
s486-egypt_destroys_persia.jpg

King Gudea- That means the entire south end of the continent and all of the vast resources there are controlled by just two nations.
Military Advisor- The Arab army will most certainly have a number of veteran and elite units, from their war with the Greeks.
King Gudea- I have faith that we can hold off their advances.

1435 A.D.
Military Advisor- Great Leader, the Arabs arrived at our border with over 20 cavalry units. Kutha Spicefields did not bring all their workers inside in time and six worker units were trampled in a cavalry charge.
s487-arabs_arrrive.jpg

King Gudea- Make sure to spread the knowledge of this massacre to all our border cities. Teach them how fast & far-reaching cavalry can be.
Military Advisor- I will spread the word, my King.

mrtn said:
That's a lot of light blue...

Yes, it is. Let's hope that Sumeria can destroy the Arabs before some of the other civs such as the Rome can grow any larger in size, strength, and power otherwise it might be tough going later and Sumeria could find itself in a squeeze play.

I think the Egyptians look more dangerous than the Arabs, but that's just me.

Ok. I'm just going to say this: I have just started to read this story, and it ROCKS! I salute you and your story:salute:

edit: I forgot to say this. This story is a masterpiece. you should go into writing. Start a series of Civ based books.

mrtn & FascistRepublic & 502nd PIR- Appreciate it, glad you like it.:)

7ronin said:

I hope that I can destroy the Arabs before they win culturally. I messed up! I meant to play for just conquest, but apparently all the win types were left open when this game was started.:( The Arabs are at 45,000 culture and are gaining around 500/turn. So, needless to say, King Gudea will come up with some reason to take out the Arabs soon.;)

-->next update sometime tomorrow, hopefully.

1440 A.D.
Domestic Advisor- Your Grace, the Arabs have constructed a grand university in honor of Isaac Newton. He is the world's leading scientist, mathematician and physicist and is credited with many important dicoveries.
s488-newtons_by_arabs.jpg

King Gudea- I have heard much about him. A few year ago I had the foreign advisor try to persuade him to build his university here, but the Arabs apparently had more to offer him.

1445 A.D.
s490-carth_destroys_otto.jpg

Military Advisor- All of our closest neighbors have doubled their territory recently. Will we be knocking any of them back down a notch or two?
King Gudea- Yes. Begin to make preparations to attack either Egypt or Arabia.
Military Advisor- But, we are at war with Arabia right now?
King Gudea- Yes we are, but peace will come soon enough. Then, in the near future, we will pay them back for their unprovoked attack. Our lost workers will also be avenged.
Military Advisor- I will draw up assault plans for both, my King.

1450 A.D.
s491-electricity.jpg

Domestic Advisor- Your Excellency, this electrical power will allow our new factories to run around the clock. Production has been boosted substantially by all these recent inventions and our way of life is changing day by day.
King Gudea- I hear that some factories are producing so efficiently that warehouses are now needed to house the surplus. Things are going quite well!

s491b-_sa_talks.jpg

King Gudea- I agree completely with researching this. The military advisor has shown me the prototype of the rapid-fire gun you guys have been working on. Having one of the little pieces inside the gun wear out, then throwing the gun away, would be a waste. By all means, complete your studies on replaceable parts, so we can equip our troops with these new guns.

1460 A.D.
Military Advisor- Master, we have destroyed 33 Arab cavalry units and have had no loss of our own, except the workers that were trampled.
King Gudea- I wonder if Abu would be willing to talk?
Foreign Advisor- I will contact him to see.

Later-
s492-peace_wi_arabs.jpg

Foreign Advisor- Abu Bakr was ready to resolve the conflict and also offered up reparations for our lost workers.
King Gudea- That's awfully gracious of him, but gold does not replace lives.

1461 A.D.
Foreign Advisor- Sir, the Egyptians and Romans have both developed superior sanitation practices. The domestic advisor somehow found out about it and she is driving me crazy asking if we have traded for it yet.
King Gudea- See if either one will part with it for electricity. If a trade goes thru, you have my permission to inform her first.

Later-
s494-elec_for_sanitation.jpg

s494a-_da_talks.jpg

King Gudea- With all these new health measures, we should be able to relegate the Black Death to the history books.

1490 A.D.
Foreign Advisor- Sir, some Egyptian coal miners have been caught off-guard, near the city of Istakhr. The volcano blew it's top and lava destroyed the mining camp.
s508-volcano.jpg

1500 A.D.
s495-replace_parts.jpg

The noise inside the factory was deafening as the machinery cut, molded and stamped out various metal pieces. King Gudea was very impressed with the assembly line, that was churning out the new long-range artillery at a very quick rate. He surveyed a row of completed artillery pieces, shook a few worker's hands and then made his way across the city, towards the barracks. Along the way, Gudea was intercepted by the science & domestic advisors.
King Gudea- Tell me again about this national pride you mentioned.
Science Advisor- We call it nationalism and we would like to spend some time to investigate it thoroughly.
Domestic Advisor- Sir, a growing feeling that we are 'a great nation' is sweeping thru our cities. This national pride can lead to significant unity and common purpose.
King Gudea- I sensed this as I looked into the faces of the factory workers. They were all smiling and working very diligently to strengthen our military. You may spend time looking into this.
Science Advisor- Thank you, my King.
King Gudea- Would you two like to come along for a demonstration at the barracks firing range? The military advisor promised a first-hand trial of the new machine gun.
Science Advisor- The gun was partly designed by me, so I wouldn't want to miss this for the world.

A few minutes later-
King Gudea arrived at the firing range to find the military advisor waiting for him. At the advisor's feet was the new machine gun. It was mounted on a small tripod with a magazine of ammunition at it's side. A group of spectators stood to one side, all awaiting the King's test & approval of the new weapon. To the other side was a unit of soldiers, freshly-trained in the use of this same weapon.
Military Advisor- This is the new machine gun that we told you about. It will fire a continuous stream of bullets as long as the trigger is pressed and ammunition is fed in from the magazine. It requires a team of two soldiers, one operating the gun and the other handling the ammunition magazine.
King Gudea- How heavy is it?
Military Advisor- The gun itself weighs 43 pounds. Where the gatling gun was large and cumbersome like a cannon, this machine gun is easily moved around the battlefield. Would you like to try it out?
King Gudea- Yes I would.

Gudea rubbed his hands together, then went to one knee behind the gun. The military advisor pointed out how to grip the weapon, the location of the trigger and how to aim it. After taking a deep breath, the King of Sumeria calmly pulled the trigger and began to mow down a line of man-shaped targets at the other end of the firing range. He did not stop until the entire 250-round magazine was emptied. Gudea rose to applause, with a big smile on his face.
King Gudea- This is glorious!! A very awesome weapon. Well done!
Military Advisor- I would say "we will rule the battlefield", but I hear that Arabia has just developed something similar to this.
King Gudea- Well, we will just have to out-produce them. Thank you for the adrenaline rush. I am more than wide awake now.

1505 A.D.
King Gudea- Have all the old units been upgraded or disbanded?
Military Advisor- All have been upgraded, except for the crusaders. They wish to rely on the archaic weapons that they are proficient with. Also, Gilgamesh is unwilling to train with our new weapons and is going to continue with his martial arts.
King Gudea- I already knew of Gilgamesh's reliance on hand-to-hand combat. The crusader's decision will be on their own heads, but make sure that Bastion is protected by infantry and artillery.
Military Advisor- The garrison at Bastion is quite robust with over 20 crusaders. Some infantry and artillery will be shipped there immediately.

1510 A.D.
Science Advisor- Great One, the Egyptians have put together a way for small businesses to survive easier, by several of them getting together to form a corporation. Maybe we could obtain that information from them?
King Gudea- I'll have the foreign advisor inquire about it.

Later-
Foreign Advisor- Sorry, Cleopatra did not bite. She must value it very highly.
s497-no_deal_for_corp.jpg

1515 A.D.
s498-carth_byz_vs_rome.jpg

King Gudea- Stop any preparations for an attack on Egypt and Arabia. We are going to capitalize on this oppurtunity and attack Carthage, while their troops are to the east fighting Rome. Begin moving our soldiers towards the border with Carthage.
Military Advisor- Your will is my command.

1520 A.D.
s499-carth_insult.jpg

King Gudea- Ignorant? Tiny minds? Is he trying to provoke me? It worked, cause we are definately attacking them now. Declare war on that worthless nation, immediately!

Later-
Foreign Advisor- Hannibal has received our war declaration.
King Gudea- Send our forces in.
Military Advisor- They are on their way, Supreme One.

The next update will probably be over the weekend, so I'll give a little explanation on things that will be in upcoming updates.

Sumeria's military units will soon be organized into divisions, regiments and battalions. Each battalion will have four units, of the same type. There are two battalions in a regiment, and two regiments in a division. So, each division will have 16 units in it. Each division can also have an additional attached specialty battalion(Example- The 1st Infantry Division could have an attached artillery battalion.)

Eventually there will also be Regimental Combat Teams(RCT) that will be comprised of only elite units. Obviously these will only come about once there are enough elite's. These RCT's will be sent on special missions behind enemy lines.

Armies are too powerful in human hands, so I have repurposed them. They are now designated(renamed) as Combat Command Headquarters or CCHQ. Each one will be in command over an army group(AG) of 4 divisions, and will stay in close proximity to all four. The CCHQ will be used to escort in reinforcements, for pillaging, for it's two-square sight radius or to protect a heavily-battered division while it heals. On occasion it may be used to attack, but that is an exception, not a rule. The CCHQ may also have an attached battalion or two of artillery or combat engineers(workers).

There is an added unit with replaceable parts, which is the machine gun team from the WWII scenario. It has the reverse stats of the infantry- 10.6.1, so if you see MG listed anywhere it means machinegunner or MG team. You can see the machine gun team in my avatar.

Hope I don't confuse anyone.

1525 A.D.
Military Advisor- My King, our forces are headed towards five Carthaginian cities. I am eager to see the machinegun units perform, so they have been sent in overwhelming force towards 3 of the cities. Rusuccuru and Edrine are further back from the national border and cavalry have been assigned to take them out. We may have caught them by surpise, cause there has been no immediate sign of counter-attack.
King Gudea- Very good! Report to me when these cities are ashes.

1530 A.D.
Military Advisor- Machinegun units have won an easy victory over defending musketmen, at Salonika and al-Kaf.
s515-al-Kaf_captured.jpg

Military Advisor- During the battle of Rusuccuru, we lost 2 cavalry units, but the city fell. At Rusguniae there were 6 units of musket defenders and all them together were no match for our machineguns.
s516-rusguniae_captured.jpg

Military Advisor- We won all four of these battles, but we have a great number of seriously hurt units. In my haste to send our units in, I failed to send along some infantry to guard our hurt units. If Carthage manages to redirect some of it's military, then some of our units will be caught out in the open.
King Gudea- Even with our machinegunners performing so well, there should have been more of a planned team effort, between our offensive and defensive units.

1531 A.D.
Foreign Advisor- Sir, our recent military action has dramatically increased tension between us and Egypt. It is obvious that Cleopatra feels her nation is more civilized than ours.
s516a-cleo_speaks.jpg

King Gudea- Being threatened leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I will not be moved from my policy of razing enemy cities. I think it is enough that the Colosseum and it's gladiatorial games have been shut down.
Domestic Advisor- There are special cases of cities that weren't razed, like Babylon.
King Gudea- Yes, I agree. The Pyramid was too valuable to tear down.
Foreign Advisor- There are rumors that Cleopatra is attempting to also align Arabia against us.
King Gudea- It would be very prudent to increase troop levels on that border.

Military Advisor- Commander, our attack on Edrine has failed. Carthage was able to fortify some infantry there, before we arrived. Nine cavalry units were sent in, 4 were lost in the battle and the remaining 5 were seriously hurt. We did not take down a single enemy unit!
s514-attack_failed.jpg

King Gudea- That is not good. Have infantry been sent to cover their retreat?
Military Advisor- Yes, infantry are now on their way, but to protect the withdrawel of all our forces. They are all being brought home for a major reorganization. I intend on having our different units work together and combine their abilities.
King Gudea- With more and more lethal weapons coming into the world, it is to our benefit to have different arms of our military work together.

s507-nationalism.jpg

s507a-sa_talks.jpg

(Scientific Method in 5 turns @ 60%)

Foreign Advisor- Supreme One, it seems that the threat from Cleopatra does not preclude her from trading with us.
King Gudea- Yes, she will play all nice when we have something she wants, then probably turn on us later. You have permission to make the trade.
s509-corp_for_national.jpg

1534 A.D.
Science Advisor- The Hittite Navy is employing a new metal boat, that we have been unable to duplicate. Our version keeps sinking and drowning all the sailors that are on board.
s510-ironclad.jpg

Science Advisor- We need to figure out something, cause our wooden ships are no match for it!
King Gudea- Your science team should be able to pull something together, so just keep trying.

1535 A.D.
Military Advisor- The Carthaginian military finally showed up, right on the heels of our retreating cavalry. Our hurt units managed to escape to fortified position, on a nearby hill(red arrow).
s517-counter.jpg

1540 A.D.
Military Advisor- My King, our forces have been reorganized into Army Groups of 4 divisions each. Army Group 1 consists of four infantry divisions, that will immediately be sent back against Carthage. Army Group 2 has four cavalry divisions and will be providing a mobile defense along our border with Egypt. Our third Army Group is being trained and organized right now.
King Gudea- Good job! Our military will now be more efficient than ever.
Military Advisor- Here is a personnel listing of the Headquarters and the 1st Infantry Division, that are in Army Group 1. You will notice the 1st Infantry Division has an attached battalion of artillery. These artillery can be fired upon enemy defenders, before any attackers are sent in.

s530-CCHQ_AG1.jpg

s518-1st_Inf_Div.jpg

Military Advisor- The 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions are on course towards Kafa and Istanbul. Both cities will soon be smoking ruins.
