There's no use case for posting it on a forum, so for this purpose no, but might at the end fall under "fair use", potentially.

They expect me to actually read a page that looks like a paywall? Madness!! ;)

I suppose it does make a certain amount of sense for the permissions to depend on if you have paid for access.

China lands spacecraft on Mars for 1st time, state media says

Touchdown makes China 2nd country after U.S. to land on Red Planet

China has landed a spacecraft on Mars for the first time in the latest advance for its space program.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday that the lander had touched down, citing the China National Space Administration.

Plans call for a rover to stay in the lander for a few days of diagnostic tests before rolling down a ramp to explore an icy area of Mars known as Utopia Planitia. It will join an American one that arrived at the red planet in February.

China's first Mars landing follows its launch last month of the main section of what will be a permanent space station and a mission that brought back rocks from the moon late last year.

"China has left a footprint on Mars for the first time, an important step for our country's space exploration," Xinhua said in announcing the landing on one of its social media accounts.

The U.S. has had nine successful landings on Mars since 1976. The Soviet Union landed on the planet in 1971, but the mission failed after the craft stopped transmitting information soon after touchdown.

A rover and a tiny helicopter from the American landing in February are currently exploring Mars. NASA expects the rover to collect its first sample in July for return to Earth in a decade.

China has landed on the moon before, but landing on Mars is a much more difficult undertaking because it has an extremely thin atmosphere.

Spacecraft must use heat shields for protection from the searing heat of reentry and both retro-rockets and parachutes to slow enough to prevent a crash landing. The parachutes and rockets must be deployed at precise times to land at the designated spot.

Only mini-retro rockets are required for a moon landing, and parachutes alone are sufficient for returning to Earth, which has a much bigger atmosphere.

before people get flooded with more UFO stories from America , one wonders what's the exact level of strife between USAF and USN . As people in blue talk of retiring the F-22 (because they have a superb new one coming in , flying according to that Ropey guy , being a video game level simulation according to others) and nothing to worry because it will be 2040 when the Raptors finally leave , people in white lets a video in which a ball goes into water ... Despite being in the same series of events where sceptics have like proven the pyramid was a regular drone in "formation" with two stars in a weird camera set up . Sceptics led by a guy who proved the Chilean Navy's officially existing UFO investigation unit's breathtaking video being regular airline service to their capital city or something ...

more impressively that earthly dudes engaged the USN , you know like trolling , everyday between 2015-17 , until , ı don't know , Trump had his rgasm about firing Cruise missiles in some Middle Eastern sandlot . This on an interview on 60 Minutes , which was famous even in Turkey in the 1980s . Yeah , former Navy person telling about impossible flight manuevres , if only ı could ever spell the word ... So , USAF sends a F-15 crew to talk shop with the Russians ?

edit : There is an official Chilean Navy thing that keeps examining UFO's . The tablet will kill me one day with like self edits ; which awesomely inferred there are Chilean UFOs in this particular case ...

the guy is an adviser to the PM , ABD is USA in Turkish , with a claim that the American ambrassador told him in person that the Americans feared [New] Turkey ... Read almost 230 messages in the echo chamber , starting nice telling how a nice guy he is , the posts turn sour over the years , that the country had no hope even back in the day with such an "empty" guy having served in the now dead Turkish Military , currently teaches lnternational Relations in some university .

in the picture , he has just ordered the cameras to zoom in , for he has the Quantum/Qatari experimental in his hand . The fighter jet designed under British supervision in Ankara ... Uhm , you have discovered it is diecast model of the American F-22 ? Even down to the American sign on the wing ? There must be tens of thousands of engineers in Ankara , even at 1% , there would be hundreds of them to know a model plane maker in person to attach some Turkish markings on it ...

this is typical New Turkey . Mocking you , with clear evidence that the country is a massive collection of undereducated fools ... And nothing like that America gives up Raptors , because China is getting ahead too fast and they need something better and we will "now" be allowed to make a F-22 level fighter jet , because the Human Civilization must be kept safe from the depradations of evil peoples , lranians or whatever ... Something staggering because ı happen to be only one on the web or thereabouts that QFX , the so called National Combat Aircraft of this country , would be kept to be an exact analogue of F-16 , which was once wargamed to like fly something like 100 sorties and shoot down an American plane , almost by accident , while losing 70 of our own . (Roughly twice worse compared to lraqi performance in 1991) . For some unfathomable reason we are now cleared to have a plane that might take the loss rate to 10:1 or 7:1 ... 60 Minutes will be unavailable or ı won't watch youtube , but am pretty sure there will be like 50 million Americans to believe they will soon have planes that can do 17 000 miles an hour ...

Let's not forget the other nations who helped China's effort.
Before the boosters kicked in, Argentina managed to get the craft higher than Maradona before his Goal of the Century.

sorry , lacking context here . Obviously not saying that Australia is the only country with its currently serving generals or similar on the open record of saying it will be war with China within 5 years , reportedly and supposedly seen on the web , no doubt after the coronavirus affair went down like a lead balloon and with the "Peace Party" in Beijing sulking at the corner . So , what kind of material help Argentina provided to a like obviously non-existant warhead on the Chinese rocket which crashed in the lndian Ocean ? Oh , a fractional orbit device and some MPA to keep track visually ? Yeah , this should really negate the Steve !

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2021/05/hardy-water-bears-survive-bullet-impacts-point
They can survive temperatures close to absolute zero. They can withstand heat beyond the boiling point of water. They can shrug off the vacuum of space and doses of radiation that would be lethal to humans. Now, researchers have subjected tardigrades, microscopic creatures affectionately known as water bears, to impacts as fast as a flying bullet. And the animals survive them, too—but only up to a point. The test places new limits on their ability to survive impacts in space—and potentially seed life on other planets.

This news piece is worth a read (just don't want to C&P everything).

Mega-satellite constellations could lead to chain-reaction spacecraft pile-ups in orbit

Bob McDonald's blog: Canadian researchers highlight concerns about the dangers of overcrowding orbit

A new report by two Canadian researchers is highlighting the growing hazard of space debris. It warns that the new mega-constellations of tens of thousands of communication satellites could pose a new kind of danger that could ultimately threaten other satellites, astronauts, our ability to use space and could even have an impact on the climate.

Recently, the uncontrolled fall from space of a large Chinese rocket booster gained worldwide attention as no one could predict where it would come crashing to Earth. Fortunately, it came down in the Indian Ocean and no one was injured. That was just one booster.

But the amount of stuff — satellites, discarded boosters and other debris in Earth orbit — is huge. And this new report warns that with projects like the SpaceX Starlink satellite constellation, the issue of space debris could approach a critical turning point.

I spoke with Astronomer Aaron Boley from the University of British Columbia, who co-wrote the new study with legal scholar Michael Byers.

He told me: "Right now, Starlink has full approval within the current legal system to go ahead and launch 12,000 satellites, and they want to put up 30,000 more, so there will be 42,000 satellites. With Starlink alone, there will be more satellites in the sky than there are naked eye visible stars."

And that's not all. Others have similar plans, including OneWeb, Amazon, Telesat, and GW, which is a Chinese state-owned company.

This astounding number of satellites will outnumber the total number of objects orbiting the Earth today and form shells around the planet in low Earth orbit up to about 750 km altitude.

One problem with these enormous constellations is the visual pollution they can cause in the night sky. You might have even seen them — strings of these fast-moving satellites can be seen under the right conditions.

Astronomers are not happy about this, and some groups have called for legal action to stop Starlink and its competitors. The scientists would prefer to look at the real constellations rather than a constellation of satellites that can pass through a telescope's frame of view, ruining photographs of the cosmos.

But Aaron Boley has highlighted what could be a bigger issue. The more objects placed in orbit, the greater the chance of collision between them, other working satellites, astronauts working in space, and people on the ground when the objects fall out of orbit.

The new satellites launched by SpaceX and other companies are not just thrown up willy-nilly. They're placed in careful orbits meant to minimize risks of collision, and modern satellites are designed to be de-orbited when they die, not just abandoned as space junk. The commercial space companies must have plans to do this in an organized and safe way. This is all good and responsible.

But what Boley is concerned about is the possibility and implications of accidents. Random pieces of untracked space debris, or even meteors, could disable these satellites, disrupting their careful orbits and the deorbiting plans. The sheer number of these new satellites increases the risk.

And this could lead to a runaway disaster. Relative speeds are so fast in space that objects running into each other tend to be blown to bits, and those bits add to the problem. With every collision, more debris is added, increasing the risk even more in what could become a runaway cascade of collisions that could make the valuable real estate of low Earth orbit incredibly dangerous.

Another possible unintended consequence of these satellite constellation raised by Boley and Byers is that even without accidents, as these thousands of satellites age out and are deorbited, this rain of dead satellites could have an impact on the climate.

When an object from space is incinerated, it doesn't disappear completely. Satellites are made mostly of aluminum and that material remains at high altitude for a period of time. High altitude particles of aluminum have been proposed as one of the strategies for geoengineering, in which particles reflect sunlight back to space and cool the climate.

There is already opposition to the idea of doing geoengineering intentionally. Falling satellites might trigger an uncontrolled experiment with the Earth's atmosphere.

Boley told me, "The development of space is outpacing our capacity to understand what type of regulatory mechanisms are needed to ensure that it is done safely and sustainably."

"We need to move forward with regulations before the constellations are fully built rather than dealing with it after the fact. We need to move beyond thinking satellite by satellite and think about how we regulate internationally, entire systems of satellites."

Let's hope it doesn't come to the point where one day we may have to change the children's song to, "Twinkle twinkle little Starlink…."

What're y'all's thoughts on this article from the Washington Post about UFOs?

Last summer, the Defense Department issued a news release with the following headline: “Establishment of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force.” The mission of the UAPTF “is to detect, analyze and catalog UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security,” according to the Pentagon.

A few months later, as part of President Donald Trump’s spending and pandemic relief package, the Senate Intelligence Committee, led by Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), included a provision calling for the director of national intelligence to help produce an unclassified report on everything government agencies know about UFOs, including scores of unusual sightings reported by military pilots.

That report is due sometime next month.

...

And last month, former CIA director R. James Woolsey said in an interview with the Black Vault, a website that collects paranormal sightings, that he wasn’t “as skeptical as I was a few years ago, to put it mildly, but something is going on that is surprising to a series of intelligent aircraft, experienced pilots.”

Both former CIA directors were referring to Air Force and Navy pilot videos that have surfaced in recent years showing unexplained objects on radar traveling at unusual speeds and performing aerial maneuvers that defy logic when compared with what even the most advanced military planes are known to be capable of.

My prediction is that we're going to find out that Elizondo is a liar, but that there are a variety of super-interesting UAPs that are going to be disclosed.

My thoughts are that the WaPo is getting very sloppy. It does not defy logic, it defies our conventional understanding of what is possibly for a flying vehicle to do. If it was defying the rules of logic it would be a whole lot more interesting.

But I am looking forward to the report.

no doubt the shoot which personally cost Tony Scott , the director . On board USS Enterprise for the filming and he had perfect lighting but the craft thrives on multiple takes and the ship moving between San Diego and Hawaii would soon make him lose it . So , he asked the captain of the ship who responded that it could be only possible if the fuel costs were paid for . Scott wrote a substantial cheque and the whole Carrier Battle Group made an 360 and Scott had his shoot . Yes , ı sized the picture to omit Tom Cruise ...

ı have insider information that ı won't like the movie . Anyhow . The real life issue being the Footpad is only meant to make Lockmart the biggest Defence Contractor , some project running rampant since 1980s , pretty much the exact same thing as Dick Cheney being the Haliburton person inside . Defence is lousy business , corrupt as hell , but F-35 has made it worse ; the end is ordained , all people can do is making as much money as they can , while they still can . 737 MAX being the perfect example . You are telling me Trump's hand picked nominee to become the Secretary of Defence beat his wife and kids and that was never noticed in all those years when he was a top Boeing executive and even #2 in Pentagon , but raised its ugly head before the Confirmation hearings and after the crash of the Ethiopian plane ?

would have been like totally nothing , if the various White Houses had not attacked the two big Commies ... With ever mounting American pressure , despite the weaking American advantages and former agreements that allowed Commie-Capitalism to do anything it wanted (as long as the White Men had their due share in profits) the worsening capability of the American industry to convert dollars into working hardware would not be noticed . When the Gentlemanly agreements went out of the way , Russia turned to its Soviet heritage and China opening its endless chests of treasure , it suddenly became an arms race in everything , and no , America has no lead in hypersonics , none whatsoever , just as an example . And China was far , far behind in the 1990s when the deal was struck ... with the Russians starving or something as well . So , basically USN has to establish an idea that it can ahieve air superiority over entire Taiwan and the sea crossings to the Mainland , hence a Chinese invasion will be a futile exercise turning into a massacre with American aerial intervention . With incredible risks of turning into a catastrophe for the entire Mankind . Which also gives Washington leverage over Taiwan to "force" it to behave .

but F-35 is the biggest achievement of the Human Civilization . To keep that idea keep standing when faced with reality , the F-35 should have no opponents . lts Stealth sets its owners apart , elevating them to gods while anyone who doesn't have an F-35 is just monkeys ... USN loses its Tomcats , which are indeed tired and outdated at the time of their "sunset" . Can handle bombing Brown people on the ground , but would be vulnerable to Flankers in air-to-air . To bolster F-35's standing , the F-18 was developed into the subpar , which is indeed quite nice as a bomber of Brown People on the ground , but , uhm , have you seen its pylons and the way they are set up as airbrakes ? Subpar would still do good over Taiwan , if the Chinese had not perfected dozens of ways to sink USN carriers , it doesn't have the range . And the week it was suggested Pentagon might be looking for F-16 but not F-16 , instead of buying new Lockmart made Block 72s it was discovered the Subpar could not have conformal tanks because of design constraints ... F-35 , dear people of CFC , is a lot of wealth to quite a number of people . And uhm , it is also a black hole that sucks money , real truck loads of money from the Western economies , causing lack of funds for other "defense" requirements ...

crosslinked from UFOs thread

the USN was stung by its inability to track the Russian subs that created the sightings , a feeling bolstered by the failure of the Sidewinder that failed to down a Syrian Fitter and an Amraam had to be fired , you know , with war frequencies and all . Like you would think any American pilot in the heat for a MiG kill would pay attention ? Which created some trouble and with Trump proving to be a bigger fool everyday , the 2017 releases came , CGl and totally faked narrative . Which reads as Pentagon was unhappy with the enlightened domination of Lockmart . As a lark , you should take notice that F-35s do not meet UFOs ...

instead of diverting massive funds for ASW to the Navy , USAF played delaying games . Until Ted Cruz saw political benefits for himself , because like he could reach out to tree hugging rainbow people of San Fransisco as a bonus when the currently average Republican voter is held by the BS of Trump and Trump might run again . lf Cruz survives Primaries his heroism in "outing" "Deep Tate" holding secrets ; because Tate is American (since there is only one Deep State , you people do not have to steal everything) ... When faced with the need (which would result in more funds for ASW in any functioning Democracy) USAF went for a F-16 but not F-16 , which has been an unexpected thing , USAF being USAF ... Which could result in a direct Gripen purchase , studies about which should satisfy the British with money , because their best colony (naturally New Turkey) is rubbing Bidon the barrel Administration in quite a wrong way ... QFX having joined the ranks of F-35 , with the latter smeared and the former now allowed to be a F-22 level thing , with prospects of sales to Arabs with USAF cutting the Raptor numbers and eventually the type itself altogether , making so much money that it could even benefit people in this country , even when they are nothing like New Turkey ... Still goes nowhere and Pentagon then allows the biggest scare for New Turkey , a Mafia boss talking about his pals and how they killed people or smuggled drugs on Youtube ... A TV programme last night , 2 hours long , the secretary for the interior of the palace cabinet "answers" questions of the Press ....

arrives with 50 cops , takes an 7 minutes to keep the country waiting because his make-up was not on time . A monologue of 40 minutes or so opens it . 54 seconds is the on-air time for the first journalist of the TV channel . Second one of the channel is famous for the hack-addition of a sound effect to his programs a couple of times , which supposedly matches gas coming out of intestines under pressure , his time is a minute and 14 seconds ; has been noticed as sabotaging the questions of the remaining two journalists . The Radical Left one had two minutes and 38 seconds ; it seems he was threatened by the interior secretary guy on live TV that child p_rnography would be found on his possession . The White Hope of the Opposition still put up a valiant effort , matching the Radical Left person with three minutes and 17 seconds ... Not a question was actually answered .

the confidence comes from US State Department intervention that has suddenly sold 24 drones of the second son-in-law of the PM to Poland , where people were like anything but expecting such a surprise . 400 million dollars , like 3 or 4 F-35s' worth but will still be far more useful . Otherwise the secretary guy was widely expected to self destruct as it seems a major aim of Mafia boss youtube videos is make his cabinet position untenable with the PM having to make sacrifices under pressure . Just like PM does not order the internet shut down or something , as he had passed laws that created the legal framework to deal with foreign websites if and when they had negative coverage of New Turkey ...

this is what eats America , its Defence companies are rotten beyond their regular self , they "can't" , they want to gain time and some extra thing to scare the Chinese with stuff they do not have . Or won't have in the next 10 thousand years . There are no Aliens , just toys and Pentagon released fakes . And it even drips downward to America's bestest friends ...

New image of the centre of the milky way:
gcenter-2021.jpg

I quite like that at NASA a 3600 x 7000 pixel image is described as a thumbnail.

In the image featured in our main graphic, X-rays from Chandra are orange, green, blue and purple, showing different X-ray energies, and the radio data from MeerKAT are shown in lilac and gray. The main features in the image are shown in a labeled version.
One thread is particularly intriguing (G0.17-0.41 in image below) because it has X-ray and radio emission intertwined. It points perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy and is about 20 light years long but only one-hundredth that size in width.
