What influence did Portugal's colonies have on its cuisine other than spices?

A lot of fruits and vegetables would have been unknown to them prior to the columbian exchange - corn, tomatoes and potatoes in particular.

For one, congratulations on your new job and consolations for having to live in Aberdeen for three months . I think £600 allowance/month for those three things will definitely keep you entertained, fed and transported. I think you are overestimating the cost of living in Britain, the further away from London/South East the cheaper it gets. That £600 will get you a long way; i hear pints of beer are still under £3 in some places...
Goodluck :)

Thanks!

So is Aberdeen boring? I've been to Scotland before, and even though I liked it a lot, I definetely wouldn't want to live there. Too grey, wet and cold. I'm hoping Aberdeen will have a cosmpolitan feel because of all the expats. Have you ever been there?

Well, if it does suck, at least I found 90 pounds fights to London, both ways.

I actually haven't been to Aberdeen but it is a common joke in Britain that whenever someone mentions they are off to some obscure settlement some kind of disparaging comment is made. Yeah, we are a miserable bunch ;)
If you are only going for three months i hope for your sake its during the summer. The British summer is glorious, probably the best weather in the world at its peak. 20-30 Celcius temperature, a light cooling breeze, with the ideal humidity and light from 6am to 10:30 pm.

6 am? Try more like 4-4.30 am in June and July.

When seeking an apartment, can you use your parent as a reference or is that not permitted? Without that reference, what are your options for selecting your first apartment? Keep trying and hope someone is willing to take a risk on you?

Thanks!

Sounds violent...

How's the mosquito situation there?

In my first apartment search, the prospective landlady was more concerned that A. Money wouldn't be a problem, as in would the rent be paid on time; B. That I paid all my pet fees (some places charge $250/pet non-refundable fees); C. That I didn't have a history of noisy parties, drug use, and trashing places - in other words, a criminal record check.

I passed with no difficulty at all. It might help you to ask the people you hope to rent from what they would prefer to accept, and start asking the people you know if they'd give you references.

By that, do you mean anyone that really knows me? I thought apartment references needed to be previous landlords.

Not too bad. In fact, I went to Canada back in 1999 - years ago, i was a very young lad and it was summer time a few hours outside of Montreal in the countryside never seen so many mosquitos buzzing around we actually needed repellent.

The worst thing in the British summer are the Midges; i may be playing football, cycling or something outdoors and by the evening the midges come out and feast on you, its quite annoying :)

You have nothing to lose by giving them whatever references you have or feel like giving them since if you don't have the 'correct' references you won't get the place anyway.

I camped for just one night in Dartmoor during a hot May/June in 1997. The midges were so thick that evening you almost breathed them in every time you opened your mouth!

What the... those things are real? I thought Tolkien just made that word of for that swamp east of Bywater.

How could you not have heard of midges, some of the most ubiquitous and widely-dispersed insects in the world?

Surely a Country Boy from the South will know all about'em ;)

They're similar to gnats, but midges tend to be of the blood-sucking variety. In typically British fashion, we relegate them to humour much of the time.
