The very many questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread XXVII

I lurked for a good while before I started posting (on OT, at least; I was a little involved on the game side). Here you all already seemed to know each other: posting style, posting history, political stances, radioactive monkeys. For a while, I didn't know how to step in to that conversation, so I just listened in.

On the other hand I charged in blurting madness. But that's just me.

As to lurkers, the thing to note is that as I write this there are more guests than users (slightly) on the OT board of the forum. I suspect most of that huge number on the board overall did surf in off google, probably through some sort of game info query. But the 36 drifting around this board are probably reading something of interest they noticed here, and even if you are clearly arguing with a stone wall you might be having an impact. As evidence.

I was going to say that OT is about half and half, but if you look at the "views" count, it seems that some people may just click and view the thread a lot, but never post, even as a member.

I started reading OT months before I registered. We definitely have regular lurkers who will never care to register.

Question: why is there the word "empire", but also the word "imperial"? Shouldn't it be "Emperial", as it's a productive of the word "empire"?

Far as I believe, impire is a cricket/baseball/one of these weird games some Commonwealth nations still play term.

Nooo. Imperium is the original word in Latin. Thence come 'imperial(is)', 'imperator', etc. 'Emperor' derives from 'imperator', eventually, via French.
Alternatively, change to impire.
Oooh, you want to learn Gaelic!

It was originally "imperator" in French. Then why did they switch to "Emperor"? Was it the good old addiction of the British to pretend being not French at any cost?

Nah, the English tried to conquer France and when they failed they tried to pretend they'd never had anything to do with it.
It's roughly imperator → emperateur (Spanish 'emperador', for reference) →(pronounced) empereur, emperor.

Noo. Blame the idiots who deformed Latin.

That would be the English, and by an extent, the French. To be fair however, the English did deform a lot of languages and incorporated them into theirs. Which didn't boil over into something remotely coherent.

Well, remember that England was taken over by Frencher-than-the-French Normans who, among other things, carried the tradition of mumbling everything with them over the sea. Cultural dominance can do wonders.

Those silly Normans.
