Quick question regarding the whole Anita Sarkeesian thing. I keep hearing about gamers gate and that's kind of confusing me. Are you guys referring to the game purchase and download service? That's the only "gamer gate" I have ever heard of, and I cannot imagine they would want to risk hurting their sales by wading into this.

And this:

Should serve as a pretty effective primer to what's going on.

When you're done with that, this:

Can give a more academic/sociological description of what's going on.

I would advise against Owen's sources.

Kotaku is a website implicated in the scandal.
Jezebel is an extremist feminist website.

They aren't interested in the truth, they just want to spew their line.

If by "scandal" you mean having sex with somebody of the opposite sex? Because nobody's denying that Zoe Quinn and Nathan Grayson were briefly dating, but if, rather, you are suggesting that Quinn deliberately had sex with Grayson in order to gain favorable reviews, then, yeah that "scandal" is a long-since-debunked nonentity.

Oh I am not really that interested in the conflict itself. I was just confused about the retailer's (gamersgate.com) involvement.

So ZQ has sex with Kotaku journalist.
Kotaku then runs a favourable piece for ZQ's depression quest game.
People call out blatant conflict of interests
Later, Kotaku denies that sex was traded for a decent review and Owen Glyndr uses that "denial" that Kotaku is innocent.

..and now you believe what Kotaku says?

Owen, I have these magic beans to sell, do you want them?

Fair enough. They have nothing to do with it.

Hrm. That said, I clicked on the Felicia Day link because I think she's awesomesauce and was not pleased that she got razzed at all. Totally love her work in Dragon Age, both the DLC and the live action youtube stuff she did.

over/under on how many years until DVD sales automatically become more expensive than digital sales (and probably become more special feature/etc). I say 2.

just marathoned orphan black s1 in basically a 30 hour period thursday/friday, but s2 is not freely available. Buying the dvd is cheaper than digital purchase though....

I just read that article (and some supporting stuff) about Felicia Day and yeah, what happened to her is indefensible. Feel free to try though, Quackers. You seem to want to do so.

FYI, the Kotaku journalist that Quinn supposedly slept with to get a favourable review of Depression Quest has never written a favourable review of Depression Quest.

thanks you just jogged my memory about Depression Quest, I had not actually connected it to gamergate or whatever, I saw a review last week on goodgame, a TV show (it was mental health week) and now am totally confused why a niche game like that ever got people stirred up about anything, now more than ever gamergate seems like an outbreak of mass hysteria

What is the best british band of the 1990s prominently featuring guitars?

The video game critic for the NYT takes up gamergate in today issue.

What do you do with the leather on a boot's uppers to protect it from deterioration in the long run?

Gentle cleaning with saddle soap then rub mink oil into it. Same thing you do with the lower part.
