I didn't even read the quote, cause i have heard of it already. It would mean "A wise person wants the frank as his friend, not as his neighbour" ;) (cause they are double-crossing invaders)

(edit: in the specific quote version -read it now here- obviously the 'a wise person' part is not stated; moreover the phrasing would make it: "You have -ie you want to have- the frank as a friend, not as a neighbour")

See? I did post that it was lacking context.

The VK Collins companion to the text has this note on the subject, btw:

"'Thou shalt have the Frank as a friend, thou shalt not have [the Frank] as a neighbor.' It is not know just how well E[inhard] knew Greek, but even C[harlemagne], no scholar, could understand spoken Greek."

Yes, Pontifex can mean bridge builder.

It refers to Edmund Spencer's poem, The Faerie Queene, which was supposedly about Elizabeth I.
Only there? I thought it was common for poets in the period. If it's there, I just need to dig up my Spenser and see if he rhymes it with banana or Rihanna.

If I recall correctly he went with "fofanna."

The latest episode of Victoria on Masterpiece was on last night. I paid extra attention to the title music, and "Gloriana" is the first word. I haven't been able to find anything online that verifies whether or not "Gloriana" was one of the ways in which people referred to Queen Victoria.

At this point I'm inclined to go with the idea that it was a nice addition to the song, Jenna Coleman is a pretty actress (apparently too tall to be an authentic Victoria, who was apparently not even 5' tall), and it's meant to evoke the majesty of female British monarchs in general.

It's not a word I've ever heard applied to the current Queen Elizabeth II.

Does anyone else think we should just let all these dumb teenagers eat the Tide Pods and let natural selection do its thing?

But people, especially young people, have always indulged in dangerous behaviour.

It's one of the ways they get to show how fit they are to others. If they can survive such and such a substance or behaviour it must mean their constitutions are very good.

That's the theory at any rate.

And it accounts quite nicely for alcohol, tobacco, various other drugs, and driving too fast.

This what is known as 'confirmation bias.' A rather common problem in evolutionary psychology.

That was my thought when i first read about it. Let Darwinism run it's course!

Is it legal to throw away mail that comes to you but is addressed to the former renter? Or do I have to attempt to forward it on?

In the past I have told the post office certain people don't live here anymore and it didn't stop the mis-mailings. I don't blame the post office but I get more mail not for me than mail for me. I am tired of forwarding stuff, I just want to throw it all away. I'll forward important stuff like tax documents because I'm not a monster but I most of the mis-mailings is credit card solicitations and stuff.

In the UK it is definitely not allowed. I have a bunch of stickers with "Unknown at this address, return to sender" on them and I just put them all in a post box with one of the stickers.

It's very unlikely natural selection will come into play though. It's pretty hard to die from a tide pod as a grown person. More likely they'll burn their mouth and/or throat and have to seek medical attention thereby taking resources away from those who need it. Just look at calls to poison control lately, they are skyrocketing cus of this dumb stunt.

I used to write NLATA (No Longer Living At This Address) on the envelope and put it back in the post box. It's only a couple of minutes of inconvenience.

Of course, if it is unaddressed or simply "To the Occupier", do what you will with it.

Since all threads are about language*, I feel compelled to ask. What is the name of that nerve on the thigh that, if hit, can be very painful and make your leg practically paralysed?
Is it the Sartorius?

Edit: the Sartorius is a muscle. :(

*and about space

no name
but there appear to be two:

"(2) Outside of thigh. A large nerve passes near the surface on the outside
of the thigh about four finger-widths above the knee. A powerful strike to
this region can render the entire leg ineffective, causing an opponent to drop.
This target is especially suitable for knee strikes and shin kicks.

(3) Inside of thigh. A large nerve passes over the bone about in the middle
of the inner thigh. A blow to this area also incapacitates the leg and can cause
the opponent to drop. Knee strikes and heel kicks are the weapons of choice
for this target."

This one! This one!

Found it by asking IRL. It's the sciatic nerve.
