The weather was hot/cold/rainy/windy today. Who do we blame?

I don't know much about the state of global warming science, but I am baffled by a number of common popular interpretations. Namely, that global warming explains the phenomena:

1. Year X was warmer than the average.
2. The exact hurricane/tropical storm Y.
3. Area Z encountered a drought.
...

Maybe I have the wrong informations, but I thought weather data was quite variable from year to year. In order to get a long term pattern, you need long term data. No particular weather event can be tied to a wholesome climate pattern, at best, it can be assigned a probability.

I'm also wondering what can be deduced from geologically short time periods (decades) with regard to global climate patterns.


Everything appears to be enmeshed in a slurry of partial truths, lies and innuendo. Few parts involved in the debate seem to have a genuine interest in the science, rather than money, populism and political favors.

So what do you think and what do you know?

a lot of the current "facts" go on "ever recorded" an with icecores thats pretty damn far.

Most accept the world previously went in cycles of ice ages.

The earth is currently cycling faster than previous.. human intervention? Have we ruined the cycle? Will nature be able to cope with the more rapid change?

We blame nobody. Just because today is cold or warm or whatever doesnt mean its a direct result of global warming.

It could just be cold today because its winter?

You can't blame specifics on Global Warming, but there's a pretty obvious trend over the last decade or so, extreme weather seems to be the norm these days. Month after month seems to be the hottest/wettest on record or for the last XXX years. The last 5(?) Hurricane seasons have all been above average etc etc

The best way it's been explained to me by a meteorologist is it's like a pair of dice.
There's the random factors which are things like weather and atmospheric changes and there's deterministic factors which include El Nino and global warming. The deterministic tends to exacerbate the random.
