You forgot SEPULTURA!!!

oh well...I voted for Metallica although I'm not diggin St. Anger too much except for three - four songs..

i love most thrash, so long as it doesn't have those annoying 'cookie monster' vocals. except napalm death- even with cookie monster vocals, they're great.
the best thrash band, now defunct unfortunately, is: the accused

Since I'm currently enjoying a peaceful ( ;) ) listen to Slayer's "Seasons in the Abyss" I just thought I'd ask who around here listens to this type of music and what their favorite band out of the three best known thrash bands of the 80's-early 90's is.

obviously I limited the poll to a specific 3 bands. stop telling me I forgot various others.

as for Kreator, I've probably heard a few of their songs. I recall them being described as death metal. but I definately do not listen to them, nor have I ever (not for any particular reason. I just really haven't had the opportunity) so no, I'm not an authority on their musical style.

and thrash requires skilled guitar players so Sepultura is not thrash :p They are not a group of particularly great musicians (though their music is neither as bad as Max's solo project Soulfly or the continuation of Sepultura without him)

and I agree that yes, all of the bands I mentioned definately died out in the mid 90's. I suppose there's still a little hope for Slayer, but they seem content enough being rich and not musically creative at the moment.....

Rock Music is the best type there is, but metal music is like suicide. It's too damn loud.

Slayer
Dark Angel
Voivod
Sodom
Destruction
Possessed
Kreator
Testament
Vader

Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth are the easy listening "Thrash" bands. And forget that Nu-Metal (spits)!

I'd call Vader death metal (though they don't exactly use a true growl). nu-metal was only mentioned in passing. it's one of those things that's not really worth talking about ;)

I'm no Anthrax fan and while I agree that Megadeth is light, I expect more of a classic rock sound when I listen to thrash. I prefer hardcore like the Dillinger Escape Plan or Botch or death metal along the lines of Nile or Meshuggah for the really heavy stuff. I listen to a bit of grindcore, but the only two grindcore bands I'm really impressed by are Pig Destroyer and Cephalic Carnage. And of course there's always a place in my life for industrial black metal like Aborym or Red Harvest (which is really just heavy industrial of some sort)

Of the 3 bands, Metallica are my faves (seen 'em twice as well:D ). I have Ride the Lightning and Master Of puppets (Like Mikoyan said, 80's albums:goodjob: though I supose Black Album is ok)

I am planning on getting Slayer's 'Reign In Blood' album soon, a couple of my friends are big fans and what I have heard is all good.

You might as well pick up Show No Mercy as well. It's just as good.

btw why do you classify Slayer as thrash? I saw an interview with the drummer, where he was proud that he invented "black metal", told a story that he worked in a metal factory and the rough parts where called like that.

because the out of date definition of black metal includes everything satanic. obviously, there's a huge amount of material that qualifies and yet sounds nothing like anything else that could be called black metal. these days it's much more meaningful to only apply the title to bands with a sound more like Burzum or Aborym.

Metallica definatly

from all bands of the hardcore/metal etc. scene I always found Metallica the only one really good. they got very melodic tunes, someone saw "MTV Icon" Metallica. Various artists covered songs from them, some in a very slow manner with guitar only etc. it was great!
I seen that show. Some of the preformances were awful. Sum41 butchering For Whom the Bell Tolls. Avril Lavigne had no business singing Fuel. Staind done ok with Nothing Else Matters. Snoop Dogg sucked when he tried Sad But True, I almost thought I was listening to Kid Rock's American Badass :D. Korn preformed One very well. But the worse performance of all was Limp Bizkit doing Welcome Home (Sanitarium), it was awful.

I saw that show too. It has really increased my repect for Korn (a band I normally feel only contempt toward). Snoop Dogg wasn't even on beat. what good is a rapper who can't keep a rythm??

Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin' Park, etc, were all put together by record companies. They deserve no respect.

I believe we can still evaluate them based on skill. Korn has a little bit, but not enough to be worth listening to. if Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park did, I wouldn't let their origins bother me. As it is, I just don't like the way their music sounds. I'm don't really agree with the whole concept that music has to be underground to be good. it just so happens that most good music is underground.

ok, mentioned Avril Lavigne, Snoop dogg and limp bizkit were the horror. the best were the 2 guys with guitars performing "nothing else matters", who was it?
