VENICE

Trade. It is the lifeblood of civilization. Once however ether was unleashed upon the unsuspecting world, it was no longer true. Decades were required until Europe recovered. Once that happened, however, in the Venetian lagoon, Venice was reborn. With a single goal in mind. To make money. Ether, soon, as it turned out, had it's beneficial sides that didn't involve smothering people with canons. Specialized ships needed wind in their sails no longer.

However, had Venice been stuck in the lagoon for all eternity, it would surely choke. Expansion soon began. The critical port of Trieste was seized, followed by Padua and Verona. Later on, as time went by, Sicily and Sardinia were subjugated and loyal (as far as possible) administrators were installed.

In 1543, an ancient debt by a remnant crusader state proved to be an opportunity to expand. The Knights of Crete took a loan long time ago, still in the age of the Crusades. But the Venetian bank never forgets, and it decided it was time enough to get back their debts. They repossessed the island, and the remaining knights had to continue pay their debts by serving as defenders for the isle. As it turns out, according to the calculations of the Venetian bank, repossessing Crete and all of its buildings accounts for approximately 75% of the loan with interest. They also calculated that at this rate, it'd take 5 generations until the knight's descendants could leave the island.

But the biggest, if riskiest, hit was Suez. A merchant named Giovanni Belini was visiting Egypt on a trading mission in 1644. He was a smart man; he graduated from the University of Padua. He noticed that the sea level between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea are the same. And Venice was at that moment suffering; spices and other exotic stocks from India and the New World were flowing in, threatening its traditional position. The Doge and the families were frantically looking for a solution. Once he returned, he laid out that idea. It was expensive; no doubt. The Mamelukes also weren't exactly desiring to give out Suez. Not that the Venetians would leave an eventual Suez Canal in their hands, anyway.

The best and brightest minds of Venice were put to work, while Venice was warring against the Mamelukes in a brutal duel for Suez. In the end, however, in 1648, they yielded. Suez was officially controlled by Venice. Another things happened in late 1648. A plan, for La Grande Trapano, or the Big Drill, which would be a rather unwieldy, ether-powered drill designed to plough through the sands and rocks of Suez. It had to be build in Crete, as the distance from Venice to Suez was too big. In Venice, however, the Arsenal had to create the ship that had to transport the drill - an enormous ship, bigger than any of the treasure galleons made by colonial nations. It was an all-or-nothing affair. If this failed, Venice would collapse.

1649 would be the year the drill would arrive in Suez, but even with the ether, which turned out to be not enough, it still took one year. But yet...On 21st April, 1650, the Venetian Suez Canal was opened. It created a boom in the Venetian economy, one that still carries them to this day. It is calculated by the Venetian bank, that the profits by Venice made repaid the costs for the construction (and the later fortification of the Canal) in nearly 45 years.

As far as governing goes, Venice is a republic. Elections come in two parts: first, oligarchic families choose candidates, which can't belong to their or any other family (usually from other minor families that have shown their worth and that their representatives are able and just), and then, the rest of Venice's population elects one among the candidates. Considering however that much of the population is usually under the control of one or another family, that sometimes feel like a formality, as those under said family's influence are usually reminded kindly that if they don't vote for the proper candidate, consequences will be swift.

The Doge usually serves Venice. Venice however is the congregation of a large number of families. So, in a rather loopsided way, he serves these families. The position of a Doge is for-life, but life is never necessarily long. Most Doges however are smart enough to realise when to stop and retire.

History: Russia was a wild land of Barbarians until Byzantine priests preached Orthodoxy to the people of Russia. Gradually, Moscow became the center of a well organized Kingdom. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and Ivan III's marriage to Sophia Palaiologina, the niece of Constantine XI Palaiologos, the Moscow court adopted Byzantine terms, rituals, titles, and emblems such as the double-headed eagle. Ivan III was crowned Tsar (Caesar). A succession of Tsars, with Tsar Alexander II (1660 - 1701) being the most famous, defeated on battle several Tatar tribes and Lithuanian armies and expanded the realm of Russia to the Urals.

More specifically, Tsars Peter I (1460 - 1500) , Ivan IV (1500 - 1532), Ivan V (1532 - 1570), Tsarina Maria (1570 - 1602), Tsar Ivan VI (1602 - 1640) and Peter II (1640 - 1660) defeated a series of Lithuanian and Polish invasions while expanding in Finland and the Caucasus. Tsar Alexander II (1660 - 1701) launched the "Ten Great Campaigns" between 1667 and 1691 against the Tatar tribes. The Russian army was drilled personally by Alexander, who also led them in battle in person causing the admiration of the people and gaining the nickname of "the new Alexander the Great". He crushed one after the other the major Tatar tribes and the remnants of the Mongols and he was able to face them despite their use of hit and run tactics and scorched earth strategy. Eventually, he extended the borders of the Empire to the Urals.

His son, Peter III (1701 - 1750), also called Peter the Great, adopted reforms of Western nations by modernizing the army while also centralizing the Empire by purging landlords and fighting a series of wars called "Years of Civil Uprising" (1710 - 1719), during which the landlords tried to fight back but were defeated. Peter also sent explorers to map Siberia and the wild lands east of Russia. One of them found a colony named Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, but as it was far away from Russian it soon became an independent Republic. Peter also sent armed forces to capture Crimea from the Tatars (Crimean War, 1742 - 1743) and also sent military forces to conquer Siberia. He was succeeded by Ivan VII (1750 - 1792), who mainly consolidated the vast Empire, was just, compassionate and avoided wars. Ivan VII was succeeded by the current Tsar, Vladimir I.

The Grand Duchy of Pamplona
320px-Bandera_Pamplona.svg.png

Capital: Pamplona
Government: Hereditary Monarchy

The Church
The Church remains the most powerful body in the Duchy controlling the lions share of land and resources. Most Christians in the Duchy are loyal to the Pope but there are still significant antipapist underground movements as well as many followers of the great reformers.

The Monarchy
The Monarchy is one of the oldest in Europe able to trace its roots back to the early medieval period and though the ruling families of the Basque Lands and surrounding regions have been from many great houses and many walks of life the line can be traced without a doubt.
The Duchy has been at times loyal to France and others to the Spanish crowns however it has always maintained a relative degree of autonomy. In the past 200 years the Dukes have tried to fully establish themselves as an independent European state. Through shrewd diplomacy and negotiation they managed to find themselves as the turn of the century at the head of a fledgling nation state growing exponentially in power.
The Duke rules from his capital in Pamplona with near absolute authority over affairs of state. The Church is the only real check to the power of the Duke and the balance of power swings often. The Duke is currently a follower of the Pope.

Name: Mossi Empire
6BNy9ws.png

Capital: Timbuktu
Ruler: Empress
State Religion: (Sunni) Islam

History: During the 1330s*, near the end of the reign of the Malian king Mansa Musa, raiders from the Mossi kingdoms started to overrun the Malian Empire. Timbuktu fell to the Mossi raiders, and despite their best attempts at resistance, the Malians were unable to push the Mossi out of their former capital. In fact, the Mossi continued to spread from there, subjugating former Malian lands and creating a new Mossi empire within its place.

To fit in with their new subjects, the Mossi, who at that point still practiced their traditional faith, started a gradual (but not complete) conversion to Islam. However, certain Mossi cultural heritage continued to be practiced, including a founder myth that traced lineage to a woman, and the resulting matrilneal lineage and acceptance of female rule that followed suit. Establishing a link with the greater islamic world, Sankore University continued to recieve royal patronage, and over the centuries of increasing funding, developed as one of the greatest learning centers in the entire world.

The result is that the Mossi Empire became a haven for intellectual pursuit. The Mossi continued to develop, being just as advanved as atleast the rest of the Islamic world. The current sovereign, Empress Yennenga III, has started her reign with an interest in the study and application of the recently discovered Ether.
