TIL: Today I Learned

My grandmother's father had her when he was about 65, if I remember correctly. My dad was 5 weeks shy of 49 when he had me. (He is 75 now.) I think I've only met one person whose father was older than mine at the time of his birth.

My grandfather was in his 40s when my mother was born, so he died while I was in primary school. Still, fathering a child in your 70s is pretty ridiculous.

TIL that there is a point at which delaying the choice to have children becomes inconsiderate for their welfare.

Who has children when they're 75? That's just flat-out disrespectful to your children.
The man had at least ten legitimate children according to his Wikipedia page.

Good for him, but having children and then dying on them when they're still minors is as bad as knocking up a woman and abandoning her whilst she's pregnant.

The man kept being 'active'. Siring a child at 75 is a bit rash, but not if there's another eight brothers alive to look after them. Remember that hands-on parenting wasn't that much of a thing back then.

True enough, I suppose.

Now that makes me wonder whether a brother can be a good father figure.

To add, historically and in many places around the world, everyone in the family took care of each other so it wasn't really a big deal (or at least as much a big deal). My grandfather was the eldest son of my great-grandfathers fourth wife (concubine I guess, polygamy and all that) and I think he has nephews and nieces that are probably old enough to be his parents. Anyways, my grandfather was kinda like the patriarch of the branch of th family descended from that fourth wife, so he tookcare of his younger siblings as they grew up. He even ended up helping to play patriarch with much of my grandmothers side of the family, serving as the kind of authoritative male figure for many of my dads cousins. My other grandpa was the fifth of eighteen children, and I believe he also played a roles n raising his siblings, just like how his eldest brother, the first child, also did likewise.

That reminds me, a few years ago we met a family in which there was some discomfiture over a mother and her 20-something-year-old daughter both being pregnant at the same time. A few years later we met them again and the aunt-and-niece duo looked like sisters.

Dear Diary, TIL Bette Midler had a singing career.

Can't compare to Samuli Edelmann's, but still.

Today, I have made two austonding discoveries!

First, Google Ad Sense is the creepiest stuff if it recommends me Bethesda's T-Shirt store.

Second, Bethesda has a T-Shirt store where you can get a Vault 101 jumpsuit!1111!

TIL throat microphones have uses other than covert communications: communications while wearing a face mask and communications in environments with high ambient noise.

TIL people can be weird enough to dress in Fallout vault jumpsuits.
