TNESI: The Glorious Mysteries

The Calling of the Sea

Peace, stability and prosperity is what most people want. Yet peace could only be insured by force of arms. Wise men prepare for war in times of peace and so it would always be, until the ending of the world. That was why he was here, a sailor, yet not a sailor, a scholar yet not a scholar. A scholar sailor who had no place on the front lines so they said. Yet one day, months ago he had been summoned to Suzhou, the Imperial Capitol.

Suzhou, the center of a civilized Chinese world free from the corruption of Mongol and Steppe influences. A bastion of a Chinese China, the arts flourished ranging from painting to architecture. It was a city of artisans, painters, and the lovely horde of government bureaucrats. Oh yes, the lovely horde of bureaucrats that Chinese governments could never last without. Even the Yuan Dynasty had her own bureaucrats, blood traitors all.

Passing the gates of the Royal City into the labyrinth of corridors that made up the Imperial Palace he marveled at how things were. They had come so close, oh so close to reunifying China and he still remembered the stories his grandfather told him of the banners and pendants of the military might of the Min a century ago. To the gates of Tatu as the armies of China strived to reunite her homeland but it was for naught. Min’s armies were pushed back to the present borders.

How he had dreamed to serve his Empire and Emperor (or Empress if that ever happens) and aid them in their glorious and righteous conquest of the rest of China. Yet his first duty as a garrison soldier in Guangzhou, he fell in love. Oh no, not with a girl and definitely not a man. And it was to the sea, the endless and eternal, the raging and calm, and the ever fickle and loyal sea which he gave his heart to. The cry of the seagulls, the smell and feel of the salty ocean water washing through you. He loved it.

And from that day forth, his mind was no more upon the land and army but upon the sea and the navy. Forever, his heart yearned for it and it and his desire was unquenchable always needing the comforting presence of the Sea. And so, he finally left the army not through desertion, but simply to another branch of the service. He served in the navy, the fleet of Min China for almost a decade rising quickly in the ranks. When he finally became Captain of his own ship, he was ecstatic beyond belief.

Yet as always, he was a scholar, not a sailor and perhaps he changed things too quickly on his ship. He was brought to account for his conduct though alas the time was not yet right for what he did. He was advised to return to his estate and live out the life of a well off landed gentry. So he did, and the authorities that be didn’t press it. You never did know when you needed a reputed crazy man to command your fleets one day.

And so as a decade passed and the people whom were once his critics left and his admirers became the new authorities in the navy, he was recalled. Recalled in fact by the highest authority in Min China, the still rightful Emperor of China, the young Emperor Hongwu. And that was why he was here riding into the Imperial Palace. It was odd really as normally middle aged relatively disgraced naval captains don’t get assignments from the Emperor himself. Unless it’s one of the said Emperor’s pet projects which was even worse.

The lifespan of the people who worked on the pet projects of the Son of Heaven was either extremely short or extremely long. They ranged from a short time in the sun or a long, long exile such as Xu Fu. Xu Fu, the legendary admiral who had went sailed to the east and was never seen again. Something he desperately desired to emulate, who knew what lay upon the east beyond the horizon? Shining cities of gold inhabited by the descendents of Xu Fu?

And how he, Captain later turned Admiral Hsu knew he was right, it was another pet project of an Emperor. Another eccentric Emperor…

Declaration of Kermartin

In the Names of the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, this declaration is made by Her Holiness the Matriarch of Cill Dara and Gallimh and His Holiness the Patriarch of Constantinople in the holy city of Kermartin, the home of Saint Ivo Advocate of the Poor. It is here forth declared by both parties that the excommunication of the Patriarch of Constantinople by the Pope of Rome on the sixteenth of July in the year one thousand and fifty-four Anno Domini to be illegitimate and null, as the Pope of Rome had no such authority and continues to have no such authority as all the Patriarchs are equals. The hierarchy of the Celtic Rite and the hierarchy of the Eastern Orthodox Church from here on enter into full communion with each other. We pray for the Holy Grace of the Good Lord in Heaven in Whose blood we are saved, the blessings of the Holy Virgin from Whose womb our Savior came, and the prayers of the Saints to Whom we give honor that They may intercede on our behalf, Amen.

NK, Thom, sorry to see you go. Gilanid Persia and Vijayanagara are now open for all takers.

I have orders from: Zanzibar, Aquitaine, Leon, Delhi, Min China, Bavaria, Irish Empire, Holy Austrian Empire, Muwahhidun Empire of Egypt, Sweden, Greater Lothringen, Ayutthaya, and the Golden Horde.

I still need orders from the Byzantines, the Norse Empire, Genoa, Tuscany, Provence, Andalusia, and Yuan China. I'll let you turn them in at any time during Friday, since this is the first turn. But I'd like them within 4-5 hours, when I'll start writing the update.
