TNESII: Et In Arcadia Ego

I'd like to sign up for Croatia as it is the only thing left in Europe.

King of the Germans, eh? Fridericvs, Romanorvm Imperator Avgvstvs, signing in. Seine kaiserliche Majestät would like to request a nation description, and recommends that the mod also incorporate the preexisting diplomatic agreements on the front page, because he didn't just ask about them for nothing. :p

Any diplomatic missives for the Reichsaußenministerium can be directed to the usual places.

Ignore this post, please.

Duly noted, Dachs, and descriptions added.

Agent, welcome. You should get in contact with Dachs, as he is a strong ally of yours.

Welcome everybody else. (And welcome back Masada.)

Links to the timeline (required reading for all my players) and the labeled map will be up today.

This is great news indeed.

OOC: First story of the nes!

The Love of All Things Sweet

“So the great Host-Lords of the Don came to him, Izyaslav I the Wrathful, and begged that he end the terrible carnage wrecked upon their peoples. Izyaslav assented and demanded that they march against their former brethren.” –Izyaslav I: The Monster

He banged the gavel and glared at the individual speaking.

“The representative from Zhytomyr is asked to politely return to his seat.”

The young man smiled, and continued as if nothing had happened.

“The Kingdom of Tver sits to our north, simply waiting for the opportune moment to strike. The Holy Roman Empire, the nation from which we could expect aid in the event of a war with Tver, is not our friend. After all, did they not support Serbia-Romea with gold against us? The Golden Horde to our East stands as mercenaries of Tver, bribed by Tverian wealth. Chernigov has no friends.

Let us forget Europe and build bridges of friendship with Tver. Chernigovian grain can more than feed the bulging populace of Tver. Tver will no longer need to fear a German blockade of her Baltic ports while the Chernigovian farmer will prosper greatly.

I propose that the export tariff on grain to Tver be significantly reduced.”

As his little speech had finished, the representative returned to his seat. As if on cue, the chamber degenerated into ruckus and chaos. The question of export tariffs had always been a touchy one, especially anything remotely involving Tver. Alexei Kamenev knew exactly what issues would be controversial, as if he had his finger at Chernigov’s pulse.

Nonetheless, he was the Speaker of the Reichstag. His gavel came down, and order was restored in due time. He quickly weighed his options. It would be impossible for a floor vote, even if he wanted to present that legislation to the chamber. Even if it passed, there was without a doubt that the Grand Prince would send it back. Best to simply let it die.

“The proposal from the representative of Zhytomyr is duly noted. It shall be given to the State Committee for appropriate consideration before the full body shall vote.” Pausing enough for the young Kamenev to rise and give a bow, he continued, “The last order of business for the day having been terminated, this body shall adjourn for the day.”

As the chamber vacated itself, he gathered his papers and briefcases and prepared to finally return home. Yet there was something charming about life as a public official. Upon leaving the Reichstag (the last of the representatives to depart per tradition), the smell of the sea hit him with the passion of a gale. It had been decades since Odessa had become the new unofficial seat of Chernigov’s government. How he missed Chernigov. Perhaps he would visit the beautiful city this winter. That would of course depend on whether or not the Government’s ambitious plans could pass through the Reichstag.

His self pondering was interrupted by the familiar and lovely melodic voice of Martin Rostov.

“Gavriil! It must have been another lovely day in the Reichstag. How is the wonderful Kamenev?” It was common knowledge to anyone who knew anything about the Reichstag that the young Kamenev had entered with a massive explosion. In his opening speech to the Chernigovian Reichstag, Kamenev had publicly stated that the heir to the throne, Prince Sergei, should marry an Egyptian or French Princess. If the man had been an idiot, that would have made things much easier.

Unfortunately, Kamenev was not stupid.

“Kamenev was as charming as usual. This time, it was the tariff.”

“Well, take this as a message the Grand Prince. Kamenev may be suitable for our plans. He is after all one of the more influential members of the agricultural lobby. The ostrozhnie respect him, if they do not love him. Remember Gavrill, that for the omnibus bill to pass the Reichstag, we will need his support.”

He watched as Rostov’s coach tromped away. Perhaps a new coalition for a new century.

***********************************

To His Majesty’s Royal Government in Chernigov:

The conditions of our colony in India remain as it has since our annexation and acceptance of this mandate.

We have made little to no progress in converting the inhabitants of Chernigovian India to the Non-Unitate Church. Frankly speaking, the natives are not interested in the Christian faith. Those who are interested follow the Christian faith of the Knights of the Nile.

I do not believe that the natives are possible of embracing Western civilization. While they are indeed very intelligent and obviously capable of advanced thought, they are tied very closely to their native Hindu faiths. They believe deeply in a rooted class system, with little if any consideration towards merit. Most disturbing are the presence of the “Untouchables” of their society. Needless to say, they are treated worse than the Negroes in the Brazilian colonies of Portugal.

It is my firm opinion, as it has been for the last few years, that Chernigovian India provides the Grand Principality nothing except debts and obligations. Chernigov has no possible interests in India or the Orient. In the event of a war with any of the great European colonial powers, Chernigov would not be able to either reinforce or even maintain our present position.

As such, it is my firm opinion that Chernigovian India should be liquidated as soon as possible.

His Majesty’s Loyal Servant,

Count Alexei Kostrikov, Governor of Chernigovian India

Opening the Doors

The chamber quieted as King Frederick XI entered the chamber. He was still young and new to the throne, but he had the presence of a ruler and unlike so many was decisive. Everyone sat and watched as his small retinue followed him to the head of the meeting chamber of the Rigsråd. Once they settled the debates began.

The usual first volley came from Lensgreve Anton Peder Bartholin. “Sire we must prepare for the inevitable aggression of the Holy Roman Empire! They will attack as sure as the sun sets and rises again.”

The Rigsråd erupted into a loud chorus of voices so that no one could be heard, King Frederick XI motioned with his hand and the Rigsråd fell quiet again.

“Yes they may, and they may not. That is not what needs to be discussed here today as we always discuss that and never get anywhere. Today we will discuss trade and establishing cordial relations with other nations. Denmark has too long been isolated by choice and we must break out of that if we are to be poised to avoid a war with the Holy Roman Empire. Focus on that for today, I will hear no more of the potential for war. We all know the potential is there, and that Denmark is as ready as she can be. Time to move on to other matters.”

Chancellor Jannick Holstein II cleared his throat and pointed to Greve Ingolf Lütken to speak.

“Sire,” he bowed to the king, “fellow members of the Rigsråd,” and then nodded to those assembled, “I have returned from the Kingdom of Tver to open more trade with them. As you are all aware we can produce wonderful goods here in Denmark, especially munitions, but we have few resources. I believe I have made good progress there as we share a common interest. I have reported details to his majesty and the chancellor, but for instance,” and now Greve Ingolf Lütken launched into a tirade of numbers which the chancellor quickly silenced lest the chamber empty before the day was out.

Chancellor Jannick Holstein II then took the floor himself. “We have also begun to invest in our colony in India. As you are all aware due to the troubled times Denmark was late to the stage and as such does not have many prospects outside of Europe. We need to improve what we do have outside of Europe and be aware that such efforts have already begun.”
