Strategy/Review
Currently we are at war with everyone on our continent. Our allies lie elsewhere and are only available for trade after optics. We can either slug it out now with our local enemies, or we can start to push towards optics now. Alternatively, we could do a combination of both.
We can throw ourselves at the French which would mean teching up to construction for catapults right now or we can tech towards optics. We already have metal casting which means we are already on our way to optics a little bit.
In the end, I decide to leave France alone (mostly) for now and focus on getting optics quickly.
I know of four ways to do that.
- The first one needs a great scientist for machinery (1690 beakers) and a great scientist for optics (1499 beakers) itself. It requires that we self research mathematics (601 beakers), compass (966 beakers) and calendar (843).
We need to self-research 2410 beakers and produce two scientists.
- We could aim to self-research machinery (1690 beakers) and pop a scientist for compass (966 beakers)and another for optics( 1499 beakers). We avoid calendar but have to self-research machinery. Because math (601 beakers) is in the way for light-bulbing optics and compass, we would need to research math also.
We need to self-research 2291 beakers and produce two scientists.
- If we can only produce one great scientist, we can use him to light-bulb optics (1499 beakers) if we self-research to optics and pick up mathetmatics (601 beakers).
This would require that we self-research 3257 beakers and produce one scientist.
- Lastly, we could self-research directly and avoid mathematics altogether. This would require 4155 beakers.
Based on these choices, we should definitely try to produce 1-2 scientists in the time it takes to produce ~2200-2400 beakers. I set research to mathematics, pretty much dedicating us to the production of a scientist in time for optics.
Alternatively, we could ignore optics and slug it out with our neighbours in which case mathematics lets us access construction.
Our capital is almost at full size and already has a library so I will begin running two scientist as soon as possible. Our second city, although it is building a library, doesnt really need it as it looks to be a production city. It is being built for culture though, so lets let it continue. That means that we need to settle another city to help get a another library up.
City Specialization: I will put up little signs to suggest how we specialize our cities and we can use this to guide our tile-improvements and builds if thats what we want to do.
Heres an outline of some of the proposed uses:
I suggest we try to get a scientist out of our capital as fast as possible. All the crabs and sheep make this easy. Otherwise, it seems to be making a great production centre.
This site, because of all the tundra, cant really be used as a commercial centre. The riverside tundra is useable only for farming or as a watermill, neither of which is well suited to commerce.
As an additional option, we may want to consider using our second city to produce a scientist that much more quickly Once it reaches size four, it could, potentially, work two farms and two scientists and produce a great scientist for our faster then it would take to set up an additional city.
If we do not use our second city to produce a scientist, this is a proposed great person farm I suggest we settle next, build a library for (and a workboat for from our capital) and start two scientists with. This would let us light bulb twice on our way towards optics but would take much longer then the second city.
Builds
I switch our capital to a settler once it gets to full size. Once the settler is built, it will begin to work two scientists.
Research
We complete metal-casting and I set us towards agriculture. Since we cant trade until optics, I think its best to research ourselves. Once agriculture is completed, I return us to the optics road with mathematics.
Tile-Improvements
Our worker has been improving our second city by building farms for growth and chopping forests to assist in the librarys construction.
War
We lost (at >97%) our swordsmen who went to protect our road from a barb archer. I could have promoted him first but with such a high chance- I didnt worry about it. These odd things happen, but so rarely that when they do, then stick out. Sorry about that, but really, the odds were STACKED in our favour.
Foreign Affairs
In 445BC, Christianity was founded and the oracle was built
Hmmmm
. I wonder what tech they choose. The French built a city close to the Mongolian iron but will probably get flipped.
NOTE: I didn't actually get to assign scientists in our capital yet because i wanted the settler to finish first.
Here is the
save.
PS: Did you see each island had three civs?
