We are financial so I agree to use coastal and commerce tiles effectively -> go for Tatran's horse city to build chariots as a counter for barb axemen.
We can't build monument for border expansion -> go for chop library.

Maybe we should go after Paris first. The city isn't built on a hill.

First off, negyvenketto, great job on pillaging the mine at Paris :goodjob:, to bad it cost both Shirimishers. I agree we should visit Paris in full force, the city is just too much food rich to pass up. I think we need a galley to ferry the troops over and I believe that should do some :whipped: for the troop build up and galley. The sooner we take Paris the better. Next we should take Orleans (or raze it), if we can keep Genghis from accessing Iron or Copper, I think we can keep it with a relatively small garrison. I also think we should get Horse Back Riding for the Horse Archers. Having both a Barracks and Stable will give the Horse Archer 2 promotions, which I find very effective at destroying incoming Barbarians and Archers, something I am hoping that will only find in Genghis's cities.

As for the Colossus, I been thinking after we get Optics we should try to circumvent the "globe" first. I do not think we will find many friends doing this, thus meaning Astronomy can wait a bit. Also I think we should get both Alphabet and Currency after Optics to that we can try to trade some Techs and Gold. Another reason to go for these Techs sooner rather than later is so that once we start taking some cities from both Genghis and Napoleon our economy will crash. Those Techs can help less the blow of having too many cities.

They have a worker so already started to rebuild it.
Paris may be building a trireme and workboats after (hopefully) and not defense.
Don't forget they already have a trireme, the AI may calling it back now.

550BC-400BC

Strategy/Review
Currently we are at war with everyone on our continent. Our allies lie elsewhere and are only available for trade after optics. We can either slug it out now with our local enemies, or we can start to push towards optics now. Alternatively, we could do a combination of both.

We can throw ourselves at the French which would mean teching up to construction for catapults right now or we can tech towards optics. We already have metal casting which means we are already on our way to optics a little bit.

In the end, I decide to leave France alone (mostly) for now and focus on getting optics quickly.

I know of four ways to do that.
  1. The first one needs a great scientist for machinery (1690 beakers) and a great scientist for optics (1499 beakers) itself. It requires that we self research mathematics (601 beakers), compass (966 beakers) and calendar (843).
We need to self-research 2410 beakers and produce two scientists.
  2. We could aim to self-research machinery (1690 beakers) and pop a scientist for compass (966 beakers)and another for optics( 1499 beakers). We avoid calendar but have to self-research machinery. Because math (601 beakers) is in the way for light-bulbing optics and compass, we would need to research math also.
We need to self-research 2291 beakers and produce two scientists.
  3. If we can only produce one great scientist, we can use him to light-bulb optics (1499 beakers) if we self-research to optics and pick up mathetmatics (601 beakers).
This would require that we self-research 3257 beakers and produce one scientist.
  4. Lastly, we could self-research directly and avoid mathematics altogether. This would require 4155 beakers.

Based on these choices, we should definitely try to produce 1-2 scientists in the time it takes to produce ~2200-2400 beakers. I set research to mathematics, pretty much dedicating us to the production of a scientist in time for optics.

Alternatively, we could ignore optics and slug it out with our neighbours in which case mathematics lets us access construction.

Our capital is almost at full size and already has a library so I will begin running two scientist as soon as possible. Our second city, although it is building a library, doesn’t really need it as it looks to be a production city. It is being built for culture though, so lets let it continue. That means that we need to settle another city to help get a another library up.

City Specialization: I will put up little signs to suggest how we specialize our cities and we can use this to guide our tile-improvements and builds if that’s what we want to do.

Here’s an outline of some of the proposed uses:
TNT002.jpg
I suggest we try to get a scientist out of our capital as fast as possible. All the crabs and sheep make this easy. Otherwise, it seems to be making a great production centre.

TNT003.jpg
This site, because of all the tundra, can’t really be used as a commercial centre. The riverside tundra is useable only for farming or as a watermill, neither of which is well suited to commerce.

As an additional option, we may want to consider using our second city to produce a scientist that much more quickly Once it reaches size four, it could, potentially, work two farms and two scientists and produce a great scientist for our faster then it would take to set up an additional city.

TNT001.jpg
If we do not use our second city to produce a scientist, this is a proposed great person farm I suggest we settle next, build a library for (and a workboat for from our capital) and start two scientists with. This would let us light bulb twice on our way towards optics but would take much longer then the second city.

Builds
I switch our capital to a settler once it gets to full size. Once the settler is built, it will begin to work two scientists.

Research
We complete metal-casting and I set us towards agriculture. Since we can’t trade until optics, I think its best to research ourselves. Once agriculture is completed, I return us to the optics road with mathematics.

Tile-Improvements
Our worker has been improving our second city by building farms for growth and chopping forests to assist in the library’s construction.

War
We lost (at >97%) our swordsmen who went to protect our road from a barb archer. I could have promoted him first but with such a high chance- I didn’t worry about it. These odd things happen, but so rarely that when they do, then stick out. Sorry about that, but really, the odds were STACKED in our favour.

Foreign Affairs
In 445BC, Christianity was founded and the oracle was built… Hmmmm…. I wonder what tech they choose. The French built a city close to the Mongolian iron but will probably get flipped.

NOTE: I didn't actually get to assign scientists in our capital yet because i wanted the settler to finish first.

Here is the save.

PS: Did you see each island had three civs?

Djenne has 18 river tiles, so it looks more like a commerce city to me.
It can support 11 watermills + 2 windmills, the other tiles can be farmed
or cottaged.

Timbuktu needs a lighthouse + mint.

I still think we should go after Paris to have a second Great Person city.
Genghis will be busy killing barbarians and Paris won't face that problem.

All 6 continents start with 3 civs and all need Optics/Astronomy to reach
each other.

I do I try to continue Immaculate's strategy or I do I try to take Paris in my turn set (or the very least set up the next player for the take over bid)? My vote in the matter is to capture Paris, but I never played like what Immaculate is suggesting, and I am intrigued. I have just looked at the save and noticed a couple of things there is a settler about halfway though it's production.

Hang on. Immaculate you played only 10 turns, both Greyfox and negyvenketto played 15 turns. Do you want to continue to your next 5 turns?
I continue my ranting :D after a response from Immaculate.

No, its cool... play 20 to make up for me if you want.

Tratan, I will play 15 turns unless you would like me to do different. However I do not think I will able to play this tonight. I am the only one in the house who is not sick :vomit: and as such I will need to prioritize sleep over fun :(. Having a house full of small children means little sleep when 1-2 kids are not feeling well. When it is all and the wife at the same time, experience has taught me that I get no rest (sorry to bore you all the details).

I should be able to play tomorrow night, in any case if the team feels that this delay will disrupt the flow of the game, please do not hesitate to skip me.

I will post a "I got it and playing" before I play.

Turn 10

Attack the Axeman on the Copper with the Chariot and win. Pillage the Copper.

Turn 11

I pillaged the road and station the troops on the hill beside Paris to hopefully prevent any troop movements. I fired the scientist at Timbuktu to allow the city to grow by one. The unhappiness from whipping has worn off.

civ4screenshot0004sx5.jpg

Turn 14

Sending over two more Axemen to Paris. We have an unpromoted Level 3 Swordsman that we could send over to there as well; however I believe we should send it with a Skirmisher to the French city just north of Kumbi Saleh. We should be able to take it. Thus deny the French Horses.

Sorry for the my delay I managed to catch the illness floating around here.

There is a French city between Djenne and Karakorum, it can be seen from the culture view. It has iron.
Paris should fall :D

Hmm ... we are sending axes for the offense and have swords defending our land :crazyeye: I land only one axe on Paris and ferry the other axe back to swap with a defending sword.

Anyway, Paris is untouchable at the moment, and Louis is whipping archers like nobody business. We have to wait for feline support.

Meanwhile, have some fun with barbies. A total of 4 barbie encounters, 2 of which we attacked, 2 of which they suicided. Funny thing is 2 of which happened in our lands and 2 of which happened in France ...

Our first attack: Skimisher vs Warrior ... I purposely choose the skimisher over the sword since the sword is at full 10exp.

tnt-AD0140-atk-barb.jpg

2nd attack is at Paris: Chariots vs Axe ... if we are going to take the city, we don't want barbs pillaging the cottages. Plus Chariot get bonus only when attacking, not defending.

tnt-AD0140-atk-barb2.jpg

1st barb suicide: Axe into Skimisher ... no chance for the axe, with the cross river penalty, forest bonus, and first strike (promoted when I see the axe).

tnt-AD0170-barb-atk.jpg

2nd barb suicide: Sword into Axe ... yes, I wanted to keep the cottage in tact, but by the time I see the sword, he is already on the forest and hill ... no sense attacking as the chance is 50-50.

tnt-AD0230-barb-sword.jpg

After pillaging the cottage, the swords end his live by charging headlong into our fortified axe.

And finally, the moment arrives:

tnt-AD0335-construction.jpg

Next player will have cats support. Can you say "Meow"?

Here are the three French cities. Paris is insane ... 50% cultural bonus ... even our best sword will be 50% at best.

tnt-AD0350-paris.jpg

Rheims is not any better, it has a CG3 archer on a hill ...

tnt-AD0350-rheims.jpg

Lyons is the easiest, although it also feature a CG3, it has no cultural nor terrain defense. However, it is too close to Mongolia.

tnt-AD0350-lyons.jpg

I would suggest we go raze Lyons, while ferrying cats and more swords to Paris.

BTW, our economy sucks. Have to start working on those coastal tiles ...
