Ooh I meant sapient (lousy Star Trek ruined my ability to be precise here). Dolphins are tricky and I don't have a good enough knowledge of thier intelligence to really come up with a good answer.

I don't. Trees certainly have ecological value, value that's not really understood by us. But (assuming no ecological value) does a tree have value if we have a database that contains its genetic code and the ability to clone it? I don't think so. Kill the last remaining tree, if we can make another.
