To those with d3dx9_32.dll problems

I had the same problem and after about four tries it finally worked.

This is the link you want to get: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en

thanks to ainwood for giving the original link. It should do the trick, did for me....finally :mad:

Ok now i'm running vista. And for some reason I cannot create an account & it won't allow me to run Civ4 now since I updated the new Patch. Now after downloading this Directx program will this bypass my issues and allow my game to run properly? Do I have to just play the expansion "Beyone The Sword" and I can't play Civ4 now? Can someone please explain in a short brief paragraph of what is exactly going on with this game please.

Sorry if this question has been asked b4...

Wow! 4 Hours later my problem is solved. I wanted to upgrade Warlords so that I could play the WOTM game. Unfortunately, it ran the 1.74 patch and I got the d3d dll error. Before checking here I reinstalled as it recommended and tested things out step by step until I found out that the 1.74 patch was the problem. I'm running XP Pro Service Pack 2.

this file fixes d3dx9_32.dll problem.

and this file fixes Error Loading Shader Libraries probelm.

You must put those 2 files in your Civ folder.

This worked for me. Civ4 Vanilla works fine. But then Warlords didn't work after I patched it to 2.13. So I put the same two files into the Warlords folder. Everything seems to work now, and I have been able to play the WOTM.

I have to admit that all of this has jaded me a little bit. The most important post in this forum discussion is:

Why does this problem exist?

because Microsoft tries to force companies to code for Vista and users to buy it. At the moment a lot of games have trouble working on Vista, once producers code for 10 this will be much better but XP users will not be able to play since Microsoft has no plans to release DirectX 10 for XP...
The other problem is that the patch requires the newest DirectX 9c release and while Microsoft Update updates most everything it does not do so for DirectX - the newest DirectX came with Beyond the Sword but when these patches (1.74 and 2.13) where released for Vanilla and Warlords as well Firaxis/Take2 forgot to include this release within their patches...

Vista sucks and I won't buying it. I had hoped to wait and see what Windows 7 might be like, but now I'm thinking that a mac might be the way to go. How is Civ for the mac? (Most likely, there are few mac users in a troubleshooting forum, so I won't get a response...)

Beyond the Sword has not been released for Mac, patches for Civ4 and Warlords where late in coming and most mods (all that change the core game rules) do not work for it - apart from this its just splendid :mischief:

its better than I make it sound - we have an active mac subforum so it seems to work for a lot of people - even with the problems I noted above :)

:)The link listed below still works for this D3DX9_32 problem. I bought the game a few days ago and was about to take it back after having this type a problem. Good thing I have a little patience and looked for a solution at the CivIv website. Point right to this site and this solution. Thanks for doing all the hard work.

Following your advice to solve D3DX_32.DLL problem, I've tried many times to download directX from a few websites but I couldn't. It kept saying

" You cannot download DirectX, There is an internal error. Refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log"

I'm using Window XP. Can you help me? What should I do now?

I also visited this site, but it showed the same result.

" You cannot download DirectX, There is an internal error. Refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log"

What's the problem???

could you look for those files on your computer and post them here? if they are large just rename them with .txt at the end or put them in a zip file and attach them to a post (click on go advanced then on manage attachments below the reply box) :)

Thank you, guys!!! :D

I think I finally overcame the first obstacle to playing Civ IV.
I successfully downloaded DirectXm, but I still have a problem.

When I start the game, a signe """Error loading shader libraries""" comes out.
If I click the sign, loading the game fails.

How can I overcome this second problem? :cry:

I successfully start my first Civ IV after downloading d3dx9_32.dll, and d3dx9_31.dll.
Thank you for all your kindness.

Awesome fix man, helped me troubleshoot in about 5 minutes. :)

I could run civ 4 perfect, then it wanted to update to 1.7, and now it has the D3DX9_32.dll problem. So just run these 2 solutions and good to go?

Hi everyone.., I recently bought civilisation 4 and installed it onto my laptop. But when I tried playing it it said "invalid 3D device type." Could anyone tell me what to do to fix this please? I'd really appreciate it..:)

please post your dxdiag results file :)

Welcome to the forums both of you :)

Ok well what it says is: Initialize renderer failed. Check directx installation, latest graphics setings
Parameters: width= 1024 deviceid= 3
height= 768
flags= 0xc
hwnd= 0 x 900c2
adaptrid= 0
Error: creation failed: invalid 3D device type
I'm not sure if this is what you wanted. I hope it it though. If it isn't, just tell me what it is and I'll get it.
Thanks.
