To Whom It May Concern

You know, if there is one thing that I have learned throughout my life, it is that most people make things out to be far more crucial and important than they ever truly are. Take politics, for instance. A group of people will argue two or more ends of an issue until they are blue in the face, but never actually deal with the issue personally.

We fight tooth and nail over things that have little or no impact on us, personally, rather than spending energy on issues that truly deserve our attention, nevermind the fact that at the end of the debate, you are stuck in the same lousy position you were in to begin with. About the only difference may be that you've pissed off quite a few people. We value so much and get so worked up over things that have almost no meaning or relavence to us.

I was driving the other day, looking for an address on a particular street. I slowed down and pulled over when I found it, and the guy behind me had to let me know how angry he was that I did so. He honked his horn and was in an uproar about it, nevermind the fact that this maniac was doing 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. Was it worth it, buddy?

Meanwhile, we stand on the precipice, in one way or another, with our futures in our very hands and we can barely manage to notice, if we do at all. Someone will be near losing a family member, because they don't talk and it is getting toward the end of that person's life and they are going to die soon. They will be gone forever, and we just don't get it.

You have some prize-winner who smokes a pack a day, telling his or herself that they will quit. Someday. Give me a break. These same people are also in the restaurants complaining about a single hair in their pasta, while they stick a minature exhaust pipe into their mouth and inhale God knows what. I don't know what is more sad, the fact that I, myself, am guilty of these kinds of things or that I know that I will do it again.

You get to a point in your life where things are going great and you're working on getting the things that you want, you see the world in particular way and then something happens. You realize what is really important to you and that you are losing it. Maybe its your health. Could be a companion. I don't know. Its not always the same thing.

Life is all about finding something to do with yourself. I think that for most of us, there are a standard set of things that make us happy and enjoy our lives. I thought that I was well on my way to having those things. I thought I knew what I had and how it was. I think I just got what some people call a 'reality check'.

It happens. For some, more than others. The one thing that I fear from it all is that one day it will be too much and I will become what despised as a youth. I will become a cynic. It takes more and more to fight it off each time.

I know a lot of you won't read the whole thing. None of you will have any idea what this is all about. I don't care. It was something that I had to say and for just once, not to myself. At least I know that some of you, out there, have gone through the same thing and in a rare instance, might sympathize. At least I can pretend.

What makes you think your life needs a defined purpose? Who told you that? Set something borad and unchallenging for yourself, then if you fail you can reduce it all to one question, was it worth the ride, did I enjoy that and move on.

Looking at life on the exterior is a good thing, just don't try and turn the mire of humanity in on yourself, it's not your fault people suck.

Oh and by the way some people just enjoy arguing, sometimes whether you reach a goal or not it crystalises your ideas or destroys them and helps you to rationalise your own sense of self. I don't think something has to effect you personally to care about it either, or to want to discuss it. If that was the case I'd of stuck to debating the pros and cons of washing socks if still in their wrappers.

Yes. 'Elitism'.

I guess being a god-fearing man is a ticket to personal thread elbowroom!

:)

Pretty much.

MjM, I can't help but notice how you chose to deflect this thread into something less relevant for your own purposes even after one warning.
Frankly, it’s blunt spam and disrespect. And don’t try responding to this, it’ll just get deleted. I’m just giving you a friendly heads-up as to where your contributory efforts thus far are going.

John, I feel the same as you at times. It’s quite interesting that usually when I’m feeling down I think about things more than at times when I’m happy. There’s a certain clarity then for some reason. I guess it is true what they say – there are positive things in every negative situation.
As of late I’ve also gotten more annoyed at people who do make a big deal out of nothing. For example I know that my parents might explode if I bump into another car or do something else. In the big scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter. There are many, many examples any one person can come up with in regards to this.
It’s even sad to see that people have gotten used to thinking that even the smallest thing they do wrong will meet some kind of a negative reaction. That’s where it’s gotten. Someone will make a dumb move somewhere and get flustered and embarrassed because the “praying eyes” are upon them. Of course, some people love to hammer down on others for no particular reason.

Most of the time I feel fine and still think of people’s superficiality when it comes to how they regard other people’s mistakes or actions which conflict with what they think should be right.

I’m also not at all submitted to the fact that “nothing matters” and that we’ll all die one day anyway. Although it is true that we will all be gone one day (not in a pessimistic way), that is just more inspiration to make that time better. And that’s exactly what matters.

I hope everything turns out well. There are self-help books out there that help a lot too (as I’ve heard).

John, there is very little in life that we can actually control beyond what we say and do as individuals and those are the most difficult of all to keep in check. Those closest to you are most important and...

What I'm taking from this thread is that the OP wants to ban smoking? COLD DEAD HANDS.

@John's original post.

We all have reality checks, man. Things are put into perspective that otherwise seemed unimportant or (in some cases) die-hard crucial. The fact is that you can make a difference in your life. What's important is rising up out of your ashes to fight another day. In that light, every event in this world can work toward your growth if you let it. When you see that the world is not as it should be, learn from what is wrong to help make things right. Everyone searches for truth in this world, and no seeker escapes unscathed. No man's quest is easy, but its what keeps him going, where his destination lies, what he looks forward to, what keeps him alive in times of conflict, that really shines through in hard times.

I know how you feel. A wise man knows the world is not right. But humans have the capacity to learn and to grow, and to find one truth in a world of dreams. If you want something to do with yourself, set a goal for yourself and work toward it, and you will find life far more purposeful. I dedicated my life to finding the truth in this world and serving God, and it has granted me more joy than I can describe. :)

Well if you ever want to make a personal thread in a sub-forum where you are quite will known make sure you bookmark this thread in case yours gets closed, it would be quite handy as a reason to show the mods why it should be kept open (although truth be told we get quite alot of leeway as it is).

I agree.

I get little lessons on this everyday.

The other day I fell off my bike (going down a hill and didn't see a speedbump) and damn near broke both my elbows. For a day I couldn't even put on my pants or lift a glass of water to my lips. The day before I'd spent moving heavy furniture all day.

Just goes to show how fragile the human body, and ultimately life is. If you can find a little bit of happiness every day, you're better off than most. If you can be honest with yourself you are better off than most also.

Personally I have found the 90's and early 00ies to be a pretty depressing and meaningless time. People driving around, buying s***, watching American Idol and survivor and MTV, not really connected with themselves, nature or anything profound, not really wanting to be it seems. But things are changing, because they have to. The climate, society, our cheapoil-based free ride is almost over and in the future people (fortunatly) won't have the choice of isolated existance. If we're to survive as a race we're going to have to deal with what is important and work together for it.

Personally I'm pretty excited.

Be easy on yourself. The universe is unfolding as planned. Suffering makes you stronger, but remember people learn best and are most creative when they have a positive attitude (even in the midst of suffering).

Good luck!

I don't think the post was that depressing. However, we've had "how do I confront a woman" threads time and time again; any practical advice ever given out on this forum about women has already been given and no further threads are necessary on that topic.

Let that be the end of this nonsense already.
